Maureen O Sullivan homeless appeal

Sincere thanks to everyone who contributed food parcels, home baking or knitting to the Maureen O Sullivan homeless appeal. It was highly appreciated and made a difference to so many.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the H.S.E Staff at St Finbarr’s Hospital,  Douglas, Cork whom collected €134 on the night of their Christmas Party and chose Maureen O’Sullivan’s Homeless Appeal as their chosen charity and to Martina Dineen, Brookpark for delivering this to us.

The local collections are co-ordinated by Margaret Crean.

Thomas Barrett, R.I.C Constable (Millstreet c.1896-c.1905)

Thomas Barrett was an RIC Constable that worked here in Millstreet in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Originally from Limerick, he began working in Kerry, married Elizabeth Browne from Scartaglin in 1889, and was transferred to Carrigadrohid soon after. In 1896 he was transferred to Millstreet, where the family lived at the West End and the Killarney Road. Some of their children were born here, and some of them died there too. Thomas’ wife Elizabeth died young, and Thomas himself died a few years later at the family home on the Killarney Road.

Below are our notes on him and his family, including the sensational murder of his wife’s father in 1882:

…To Mr Cronin — He saw about a hundred fish passing about in the river in dying condition that morning. Constable Barrett deposed to seeing Thomas Linehan take a out of river and Daniel Connell committed a similar offence about eleven o’clock in the day.
Constable Ryan saw Wm Murray about seven o’clock in tbe morning take a fish out the river, and about hour afterwaids he saw Patrick Lynch do same…. [Cork Constitution – Wednesday 15 June 1892]

Eily’s Report – 14th January

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to my first report of 2020.

Not only have we a New Year, but we have a new decade. Going forward from today I feel ill- prepared to give an account of the happenings of past number of weeks  because of a long spell of flu, I missed out on Christmas completely. The lovely closing down parties before it where the many things I’m involved in around the parish, where everybody will recap on the past year, revamp friendships and plan for more of the same ‘after Christmas’. I missed all the lovely church services and the Women’s Little Christmas party etc.

Mind you I didn’t spend my time out, saying “why me”. It does us a lot of good sometimes to take a step back. Take time to think over  what you’re missing and how much we miss them. The involvement, the companionship and the support of such things become all the more important and  worthwhile when you are separated from them for a little while. Buíochas le Dia, all is well again.
