Murder at Shandy Hall returns to the Cork Opera House

Having sold out on its debut in Cork Opera House, Ireland’s first murder mystery musical starring Patrick Bergin returns in February 2017. A powerful and original period drama based on a true crime in Victorian County Cork in 1887 and a cast of real characters including a cruel killer; a beautiful governess; a betrayed wife; a canny and clever detective, a brilliant pathologist and a notorious hangman. This production is written and directed by Michael Sheridan based on his best -selling book with music and lyrics by Cork men Alan Kiely and Kevin Connolly.

An Evening with Louise & Norman Morrissey

Louise Morrissey has long been regarded by both folk and country music enthusiasts as one of our vocal treasures. She began her music career together with her brothers as part of the highly acclaimed folk group The Morrisseys . From the mid 70’s through to the late 80’s The Morrisseys enjoyed national and international success. Louise has also enjoyed a stellar solo career and returns to Macroom after a powerful sell out performance last year.

Joining Louise on the night will be her brother Norman, and together they will share with their audience many memories, stories and songs. This special concert at Riverside Park Hotel will be the perfect pick me up after the busy festive period.

Pat Shortt’s Brand New Show is coming back to the Briery Gap

Fresh from the success of his award-winning show, Selfie (“Dangerously funny.” – onstageblog.com, New York) which sold out Briery Gap Theatre last January, Pat Shortt returns with a brand new show called How’s Tings?

In a night of music and mayhem, Ireland’s most popular comedian explores all sorts of tings. Big tings and little tings. Personal tings and tings that are not so personal. Important international tings and tings that only affect the parish. In Shortt, it’s a funny show about tings.

Now he is embracing the Grey and letting the wisdom of his years inspire his stand up. Grey Matters tackles the issues confronting Des these days, returning to live in New York, being surrounded by other people’s kids, gender and marriage equality, the dangers of snapchat, dating a Chinese woman, the prospect of reaching 40 and most of all, after the documentary-style stand up show about his time in China, Des is looking forward to returning to straight stand up at Riverside Park Hotel where he can riff about whatever is on his mind.

Briery Gap Relaunching Cinema

Briery Gap is relaunching Cinema in conjunction with The Castle Hotel this coming Monday, 13th June at 8:30pm. Your support would be greatly appreciated as we begin our journey forward after the recent fire in Briery Gap Theatre. The film being shown is the Oscar winning ‘The Revenant’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Cinema: Mise Éire

The second of our special events to celebrate our Irish Culture will be a screening of ‘Mise Éire’. This film is a historic artistic collaboration of George Morrison’s pioneering cinematic work, Seán Ó Riada’s innovative music score, and Gael Linn’s film-making experience. The film uses newsreel and contemporary photographs to tell the story of events surrounding the Easter Rising of 1916. Ó Riada’s inspired musical score brought the images to life and instilled them with emotion. The title track, Mise Éire, instills a tremendous feeling of national pride and is one of the world’s most recognised pieces of Irish music. Briery Gap: Thomas Kent – 1916 Rebel

On May 9th 1916 Thomas Kent became the only man outside of Dublin to be executed on Irish soil in the immediate aftermath of the Easter Rising. This forgotten story is brought to you by Cork Theatre Company Lantern Productions as part of the 1916 centenary celebrations. The thrilling and heartbreaking story of Cork man Thomas Kent, part of a prominent nationalist family who lived in Castlelyons, follows his journey from his involvement in the land league, to advocating for Irish independence to becoming a well-known member of the Irish Volunteers. Prepared to take part in the Easter Rising, the Kent brothers were devastated by the orders to stand down. This, however, was not to be the end of their fight…

Crystal Swing at the Briery Gap

Crystal Swing comprises Mary Murray-Burke and her son and daughter, Derek and Dervla Burke. Since the band’s video of the song, ‘He Drinks Tequila’ was posted on YouTube in January, 2010, they have become a National and International hit and have performed on notable shows such as The Late Late Show, and the Ellen DeGeneras show in America. They have also performed with stars such as Lilly Allen and Bonnie Tyler as well as most of the home-grown Irish stars of the music industry. Crystal Swings show in Briery Gap Theatre is sure to get the audience going as they perform Rock n’ Roll and Showband numbers as well as the big hits from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, right up to today’s favourites. Cinema: Macroom Town & Countryside 1993 by LTV

We at Briery Gap Cinema are delighted to announce that we will be screening the LTV production ‘Macroom Town and Countryside’ from 1993. Presented by Barry O’ Brien this film explores Macroom Town and it hinterland and is based on interviews with local people. Many interesting topics such as history, crafts and times gone by are discussed. The film was recorded by Dan Joe Kelleher and is 1 hr 55 mins in length.

LTV1 and LTV2, based in Macroom and Millstreet, are much-loved local services that celebrate their respective areas. LTV began broadcasting just over 30 years ago, and with a hardworking team of volunteers the channels produce local uplifting shows which are thoroughly enjoyed and cherished.

“Macroom Town & Countryside 1993 by LTV” will be shown on 18th of January at 8:30pm in the Briery Gap. Admission is €5. [further details]

Cinema: Older Than Ireland

Older Than Ireland is a landmark feature documentary that explores what it means to have lived one hundred years in Ireland, as seen through the eyes of its oldest citizens. Featuring thirty men and women, this remarkable group of centenarians, all born before 1916. These centenarians are our living history and it is through their wit, wisdom and philosophy that the film explores the more universal themes of life. This is the first time this well-loved fairy-tale has been staged at Briery Gap and celebrates their 16th Panto Production with a cast and chorus of over 120 talented adults and children.

Steeped with humour, music and a sprinkle of romance, this year’s Panto features all the traditional characters of the story with a few surprises sure to entertain anyone that believes in a little magic at Christmas time!

Drama: Callaghan’s Place

Update – 20th Nov: Unfortunately the show has had to be cancelled due to a bereavement associated with the drama group. The show has been rescheduled for January 2016.

Killorglin Drama Group present their new production of “Callaghan’s Place”. A two-act play by renowned Sligo-born playwright John Mc Dwyer, (works include ‘Unforgiven’, ‘You’ll never walk alone’, ‘Love is’ and more), it tells the tale of a family struggling to cope with economic and social life. An only daughter is about to leave home. Her father is besotted and bereft at the thought; her mother is ignored and unhappy. Enter an Englishman of unknown reputation or origin into “Callaghan’s Place”, and the tale follows the community’s fascination and curiosity. Who is he, where has he come from and what did he do? The intrigue builds into a crescendo through lively scenes of rich dialogue. This interpretation by Killorglin Drama Group brings the setting to a rural Kerry scene and the storytelling is punctuated throughout with heartfelt truths and hilarious metaphors, guaranteeing a very enjoyable evening’s entertainment!

A rip-roaring three-act comedy, written by Michael J. Ginnelly. The manipulative Katie pretends to be sick in a bid to ensure her daughter, Mary, stays at home to look after her and Mary’s brother Seán.

Mary struggles to cope with the abuse, hoping that someday her boyfriend of many years will finally pop the question and whisk her away from her mundane life at home!

Briery Gap: The Real McCoy

The play, set in 1964, focuses on the life of 68 year-old Madge Mulloy who has spent more than 40 years struggling to survive on a small farm with her only daughter Maura. Sadly, Madge has had to live with the fact that her husband Tom simply vanished without a trace within five months of marrying her! The play centres on Tom’s homecoming and explanation of his disappearance. With two love stories, a dominant wife, a frightened husband, a confused curate, a gormless postman and two pedigree gossips, this production has all the ingredients for an unforgettable night of entertainment!

2015-10-20 Comhaltas Macallas na hÉireann at the Briery GapEach year the National Tour assembles a fine mix of established artists together with up-and-coming young stars drawn from all four Provinces of Ireland. These are blended together into a fast-moving and colourful show which appeals to both the connoisseurs and peripheral fans of Irish traditional entertainment.

Macalla na hÉireann brings over two hours of the best of traditional entertainment to a wide range of venues and a wider range of audiences. These concerts illustrate the scope of the various traditional art forms- all aspects of solo and group virtuoso instrumental music, songs as Gaeilge and traditional ballads, various forms of traditional dancing and the art of storytelling and recitation. Fear A’ Tí for Macallla na hEireann 2015 is the legendary singer and raconteur Seán Ó Sé who needs no introduction to audiences throughout Ireland and the world over. Briery Gap: Cookie and the Vaudevilles

A five piece Cork based band playing original music in a Hybrid-Retro-jazz style. The Band is fronted by COOKIE (aka Caitriona Fallon ) who has previously toured worldwide as lead vocalist with the RIVERDANCE phenomenon. COOKIE is a native of Cobh, Co. Cork and has been singing all her life, receiving classical training in voice at the Cork School of Music. THE VAUDEVILLES consists of accomplished musicians with many years of national and international experience. Dave Barry – Double-Bass and mandolin, John McGrath – Guitar, Alan Carney – Piano,flute and melodica, and Marc Anderson – Drums.
