We thank Principal, Pól Ó Síodhcháin for sharing this Friday evening (10th Jan. 2020) images from the BTYSTE 2020 at the RDS in which MCS features in a number of Award Winning Projects. Sincere congratulations to All the Students who participated and a special mention to the Award Winning Projects. Well done also to the Staff Members who have been wonderfully supportive. Pól has just shared the following update: “What a proud night for MCS at BTYSTE! In total 5 group awards: 3rd for Harry, Donagh and Darragh in social and behavioural sciences; 2nd for Omar, Darren & Bevin in biological and ecological sciences and a special award from Teagasc. 2 highly commended Awards for Orlaith and Jenny and Eabha, Fia and Taragh. Tremendous achievement! Thanks Seán for helping to create such a positive atmosphere & work ethic in MCS! (It was an honour to be involved in this year’s brilliant event, Pól) We celebrate this amazing success as a whole school community.” During our radio interviews with the Students and Teachers they all emphasised how grateful they were to Millstreet Community Council for the annual much appreciated financial support given for the important BTYSTE experience. Donagh, Darragh, and Harry, are currently helping to raise awareness of testicular cancer by asking men to complete their short cancer awareness survey. This is a part of the research for their BT Young Scientist project which they hope to be presenting in Dublin next January. A brave project to take on, but one that could actually save lives. It’s simple, anonymous, and will only take a few minutes, so please help them out by completing their survey.

A visit to the recent BTYS Exhibition at Dublin’s RDS was hugely inspiring and uplifting where the superb creativity of Ireland’s young people was truly in evidence. We meet and interview enthusiastic and dedicated Students from Millstreet Community School, from Bantry Community College as well as Students from Kanturk, Clare and many other areas. Below we share images from our visit during which we got wonderful support from Teachers Denise, Francis and Jennifer as well as from Fr. James McSweeney. And we get to meet Simon Meehan – overall winner of last year’s National Competition and who also was very successful at European level. What follows is an important message from one of the six groups of TY students from Millstreet Community School who have qualified for the BT Young Scientist Exhibition which will be held in Dublin in January 2019. They are hoping that you will be able to assist them. Thank you, in advance…
Our project has been selected for the BT Young Scientist competition, The title of the project is ” The effects of psoriasis on adolescent mental health in 2018″ As a teenager with the condition, the topic is of personal interest to a group member and we believe that the stress it causes is overlooked in its treatment. We are interested in finding how other young people deal with the condition and would appreciate if you could complete the below survey. Thank you. Hannah Keane and Ria Buckley.
Congratulations to Mark Casey and Eimear Corcoran from Millstreet Community School on winning a ‘highly recommended’ in the Social and Behavioural Sciences category at the BT Young Scientist Exhibition held in Dublin recently. Eimear and Mark researched a project on improving the ranking system for Ireland’s second level schools. There were 104 projects in the final in this category making Mark and Eimear’s achievement most impressive.
Also at the Exhibition, Brian O’ Sullivan, Dylan Sheehan and David O’Donovan presented their project on the effects of heavy school bags on pupils to Minister for Defence Paul Keogh and to Michael Healy-Rae TD.
Jordan Kiely, Abby Ring and Emma McSweeney conducted research on a health related issue: Are teenagers carrying risk factors now that we would only see in older people before?
Emergency personnel listen carefully as Shannon O’Sullivan and Katie Healy as they explain their project at the Exhibition, that was entitled Charcoal or Eye Liner Markers – Which is better to help the daily lives of firefighters?
All the students are to be commended for the way they spoke about their projects, not just to the Exhibition judges but also to those who simply stopped to enquiry about the research they had carried out. Thanks must also be extended to the teachers who have helped the students prepare for the Exhibition.
Congratulations to Darragh Twomey, Aubane, and Neil O’Leary, Prohus, who were runners-up in the Group Category of the BT Young Scientist Competition at the RDS in Dublin, also getting the Agricultural Innovation prize from Teagasc, and well as the Perrigo Best Biological and Ecological Project. They discovered that the common natural bacteria found in plants, Pseudomonas Fluorescens, could be used to markedly increase the yield of certain barley crops. Both are students at Coláiste Treasa, Kanturk.

As Fr. James McSweeney had earlier today suggested quite a number of projects had been shortlisted and predicted the wonderfully talented Simon Meehan of Coláiste Choilm, Ballincollig would win and now has won the overall Young Scientist of the Year. I’ve just been chatting with Fr. James and with Simon’s Dad – Jeremy whom many of us know from his central role in “Bóthar” for many years – and the atmosphere in the background is electric with all the excitement at the RDS venue. Simon Meehan and others will now appear in tonight’s “Late Late Show”. Below are two images showing Winner Simon:
And our sincere congratulations to All Students who qualified to appear at this year’s prestigious event – We’re also delighted for Darragh Twomey and his Group of Coláiste Treasa, Kanturk who were presented with many valuable Awards. “… Equally topical, and timely, is the project by three students from Millstreet Community School, in Cork. Katie Hickey, Robyn Sheehan and Elmarie Kelleher were all inspired to take up sport by women role models, although that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for the men, too.
Their project – the correlation between success in an Olympic sport and participation in that sport following the Olympics – focused on the O’Donovan brothers, Gary and Paul, who now famously won Olympic silver in rowing in last August. [read more …] “Which Olympic sport is most suitable for me?”
Millstreet Community Council has also provided significant financial support this year to Millstreet Christmas Lights Committee. And below we view the enthusiastic Transition Year Students at Millstreet Community School who are presently preparing a special issue of “Clara News” which will be on sale before Christmas.
Students Pádraig, James and Shane who are presently attending the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition in Dublin were interviewed by TV3’s Vincent Browne on Thursday night on “Tonight with Vincent Browne”. The three wonderfully articulate and very professional Students were superb in the interview and are a tremendous credit to their families and their school. And what splendid Ambassadors they are for Millstreet also in the manner by which they promoted the area in such a positive manner. Sincere congratulations to All. Click on the images to enlarge. Our sincere thanks to Fr. James McSweeney for the seven splendid pictures just sent live from Dublin of the wonderfully talented Students of Millstreet Community School who are presently attending this highly prestigious Annual Exhibition at the RDS. Special thanks also to teacher Shane Guerin for making contact with us and in sharing the uplifting story of Millstreet in the Capital! Shane wishes to acknowledge the much appreciated financial support from Millstreet Community Council which has been provided not only this year but on many previous years also helping to fund this marvellously educational annual visit to the national competition. The school maintained its impressive record at this event with all 4 proposed projects making it through to the RDS:
2077 projects were submitted nationally and with just 550 being accepted, the four accepted from Millstreet already represents a major achievement. All had a ball in Dublin, joined on the final day by the full T.Y. group and 2nd years.
