 Where The Road Takes Me

Having spent forty years as the frontline face of flagship TV on BBC and ITV, Denis Tuohy came to Castletownbere for a number of years and an opportunity to tackle his autobiography.

Armed with a plentiful supply of conversational subjects, he joins John Greene this Sunday evening on ‘Where the road takes me’, in the first of a two part programme.

Tuohy had overseen eight General Elections in the UK and in her memoirs, the late Margaret Thatcher referred to her interview with him in 1979, as the most hostile of that campaign.

There was also a day spent in the company of the infamous Charles Manson Family, after locating them in hiding in a remote area of California.  As the mood darkened considerably, Tuohy and his camera crew were lucky to leave alive. (One of his interviewees was later jailed for life for the attempted murder of  American President Gerald Ford))

He was also thrown off a Pirate Whaling ship in Portugal for asking the wrong questions.

 Where The Road Takes Me

Next Wednesday April 28th is the centenary of the executions of four IRA Volunteers at what was then Victoria Barracks in Cork.

Patrick O’Sullivan and Maurice Moore who were arrested during the Clonmult ambush in East Cork, were executed with Patrick Ronayne and nineteen year old Thomas Mulcahy who were arrested at Mourneabbey five days earlier, during the War of Independence.

On ‘Where the road takes me’ this Sunday evening, John Greene  looks back at the Mourneabbey ambush and discovers that…… 

* The IRA had no escape plan.  (53 men –  made up from The Flying  Column and local volunteers)

* The unexpected arrival of the Manchester regiment confused the    Lancashires and allowed the Flying Column escape.

* The Black and Tans who were stationed nearby in Mallow were not  allowed to take part and why the British Railway Worker’s Union  were threatening all-out strike if they did.

* A spy was eventually identified and hunted, not only by the IRA, but  later also by ‘Free Staters’ during the Civil War.

 Where The Road Takes Me

After singer Sandie Jones passed away in September of 2019, it was necessary to organise a ‘GoFundMe’ account in order to fulfil her wishes to be brought back to Dublin, to be buried beside her parents. 

It was a sad end for an extremely talented and beautiful woman who rose to fame in 1972. 

When Joe Mac and Brendan O’Brien left the Dixies Showband to form Stage 2 in 1972, it was Sandie Jones who took over as lead singer with the Cork band.

She won the National Song Contest staged in the Cork Opera House the same year and then went forward to the UK to represent Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest, coming 15th with ‘Ceol an Grá’.

Where The Road Takes Me

On this week’s edition of Where the road takes me, John Greene goes here, there and everywhere – virtually of course and observing social distancing if required – which it wasn’t.

They were regarded as helpful and kind landlords, but their stately home was still burned in June of 1921.  A visit to Ryecourt to meet Rosaleen Tonson-Rye is planned.

In the aftermath of a successful Cheltenham festival for the Irish, we pay a visit to the homeplace of legendary horse trainer Vincent o’Brien.

And……..We recall a conversation with Hubie Hurley from Farnanes who passed away on February 9th last.  After his father died at a young age, Hubie’s mother pulled out all the stops to ensure all her family had  careers.  As a result, Hubie and his brother’ Pat’s talent is still on view in many churches today. Trained in CUH and Bantry General Hospital, Alan is now one of the leading young Consultant Gastro-Enterologists in the UK and leading Clinician at the Devon Gut Clinic. 

During his time at the frontline of the hospital’s Covid-19 wards he encountered many patients who were also suffering from Chronic diseases and thus limiting their chances of recovery. 

It’s time he says that people should know the facts about our Western diet and think seriously of adopting a plant-based food diet.

Easier said than done, as we Irish love our cow.

Where The Road Takes Me

In 1921 the IRA Hierarchy made an order that women who were found guilty of spying or collaborating with the enemy, were to be banished from their homeplace. 

However, some local Commanders rewrote those rules and executed at least three women who had crossed the line as they saw it. 

On this week’s edition of ‘Where the road takes me’, John Greene delves into the story of Beara woman Bridget Noble who was kidnapped by the IRA, held hostage for over a week and executed.  Her remains were never located.

We hear from author Seán Boyne who has written extensively about it and we also joined by musician and composer Skully, who wrote two pieces of music in memory of Bridget Noble.

Where The Road Takes Me

After an horrific road accident in Iraq cut short his career as a trauma surgeon,  Dr. Mike Ryan joined the World Health Organisation in 1996 and went to work in their newly opened unit, dealing in epidemics and infectious diseases.

Born in County Sligo, but raised in Charlestown,  County Mayo, he comes from farming and merchant stock. This Sunday evening he speaks to John Greene on Where the road takes me. 

While we hear about life in war-torn countries fighting Ebola and SARS, the vast majority of the conversation turns to Covid 19. 

He is strong in the belief that, despite several warnings, we had our heads in the sand as to the seriousness of this disease.

In the immediate aftermath of the War of Independence and the signing of the Truce, it wasn’t victorious stories of Kilmichael, Crossbarry and Tooreengarive that were spoken of, but instead the IRA’s worst defeat in a single engagement. 

In the Battle of Clonmult on February 20th 1921, the IRA lost fourteen volunteers, seven of whom were shot dead after they had surrendered.  Two more were later executed.  A local community was traumatised and the East Cork Flying Column was no more.

This Sunday evening in the first of a two part programme on ‘Where the road takes me’,  it’s a pre-lockdown journey through the vast parish of Ballinhassig.

John Greene begins in Ballinhassig, where police shot dead eleven people during a faction fight in 1845.  However, there was little time to dwell on the tragedy, as the famine came hot on its heels and provided more to worry about.

Later, but not far away, the McCarthy family move to London after being evicted from their home.  Their son Liam is born.  His name is now synonymous with Michael Collins and Sam Maguire.  As a result, the local GAA pitch is named in his honour and the cup for the winners of the All Ireland senior hurling championship bears his name. In the middle of the 18th century, Kerry was making a name for itself in tourism circles.  There was a desire in Cork to connect with their nearest neighbours.

As the road network was virtually non existent, a John Murphy from Castleisland was commissioned to build a 56 mile long stretch of road linking Killarney with Rathmore, Millstreet and Cork City.

He would have to include a total of 24 bridges along the way and raise the money himself to do so. 

Having completed the work, Murphy was in financial ruin, but his road network helped one industry to thrive and flourish.

The 2015 movie The Revenant, was known for more than its storyline,  with several actors and crew leaving the set because of the gruelling conditions,  the demands of its director and running unnecessarily over budget.

When stuntman and actor Glenn Ennis signed on,  he would never have realised that his three minute cameo in the film would bring him fame and be one of the main talking points of a movie that was not always historically accurate.

Playing the part of a grizzly bear protecting her cubs, the ferocity and horror of his attack on Di Caprio, made it the most talked about film piece of the year.  Questions were also asked if the bear had molested Di Caprio.

It’s a virtual journey to the village of Crookstown this week on ‘Where the road takes me’, as John Greene goes to meet members of the local Social Club.

Having had to cancel the majority of their planned events during the year, the club decided to diversify and produce a valuable social history of the village and surrounding areas.  The end result is a book entitled ‘The way we were’

On the programme this week we meet historian and author Michael Galvin who outlines the course of the Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919, which claimed 20,000 lives in Ireland.

We hear about Poulanargid Harrier Club whose first outings one hundred years ago were in earshot of the Kilmichael Ambush.

Local filmaker Brendan Hayes from Dunmanway talks about his documentary –  ‘Here’s to the Boys – Kilmichael – One hundred years later’.

Between 1959 and 1979 the three Williamson brothers along with Victor Sullivan, plied their trade as the Bluebell Quartet around the dance-halls of Cork and Kerry mainly.  Sadly, both Eddie and Harry Williamson are since deceased.

In 1946, a nine year old boy on holidays on his Grandmother’s farm on the Beara peninsula, unearths a revolver from the ground while driving a horse-drawn harrow.  Even at such a young age, Victor Sullivan is aware that his find is part of a secret that adults refuse to speak about and children should not concern themselves with.

Seventy five years earlier, in 1871, nine year old Johnnie Gill is involved in a farm accident that leaves him unable to walk, stand or sit for the remainder of his life.  Deemed a cripple, he is shut away in an upstairs  tiny chamber to prevent him from bringing shame on the family.

On this week’s edition of ‘Where the road takes me’, Victor Sullivan joins John Greene to talk about the amazing story of Johnnie Gill – his Grand-Uncle.  It’s a story of how one brave man overcame his disability and challenged the extreme social prejudices of two centuries. After being diagnosed with throat cancer, Michael was advised to put his affairs in order.  Fortunately, Michael had completely different plans for his future. 

Almost fifty years later he fulfills a lifelong dream to build a wooden boat.  He also throws in a few obstacles of his own to make it more challenging – like knowing nothing about boat-building and not visiting any hardware store for materials of any kind.
