“Where the Road Take Me” at 7 This Evening on C103

This week on Where the road takes me, John Greene speaks to a Cork based Kerryman who reflects on an unusual childhood.

Gearoid Cheaist (Kesht) o’Cathain was reared on the Blasket Islands without priest, electricity, doctor church or school. National Geographic magazine referred to him as the loneliest boy in the world.

The home of Peig Sayers and Tomas o’Criomhain got it’s name from the Norse word ‘Brasker’, meaning dangerous place. Although it was such a place, it was still home to a closely knit community.

Gearoid is now the only surviving member of that community, and shares his story on Where the road takes me – this Sunday evening at 7 – on C103.

Update: The programme has been uploaded onto player.fm by C103, and can be listened to here.

Born in Kilnap Place in Farranree on the Northside of Cork City, Liam P
Foley was credited with promoting Irish music and dancing enormously in his
native City and County.

This week on Where the road takes me John Greene discovers a unique
character who laid down stringent rules and regulations that were definitely
non-negotiable.

Collar and tie had to be worn, no alcohol consumed, and no close dancing was
allowed, but still the punters flocked to his dances in the fifties, sixties

Two hundred and seventy years ago in 1748, and almost to the day, a fifty
six mile straight road was opened between Killarney and Cork.

Although being awarded the contract for it, John Murphy from Castleisland had to raise his own finance, in the hope that he would recoup it all by making it a toll road. But the road brought financial ruin for Murphy, resulting in debts of over four thousand pounds. Nobody knows for certain what happened to him afterwards..

On Where the road takes me this Sunday evening, our journey takes us to the East of the County to Shanagarry.  John Greene pays a visit to author,
teacher, celebrity chef and co-founder of Ballymaloe Cookery School – Rory O’Connell.

After what he describes as a ‘free range’ upbringing in the village of
Culahill County Laois,  Rory tested his resolve for a career in both the
legal and auctioneering professions.  Deciding eventually that neither
careers were for him,  and on the suggestion of his mother, he went to join his sister Darina Allen at Ballymaloe House,  where he worked under Myrtle Allen.

Honing his skills under Nico Ladenis in Chez Nico in London and with Alice Waters in California, he returned to Ballymaloe House as head chef.

There are food matters galore to be discussed on this week’s programme
including why we Irish murder vegetables and have an unwarranted fear of fish.

While the regulations seem to be sufficiently stringent, Rory O’Connell
believes that the whole area of organic growing requires more explanation
for the consumer.

During the Irish Famine of 1845 to 1847, those who raised enough money to emigrate were deemed the lucky ones, but those left behind faced the possibility of death from hunger or fever, or both. Many were buried where they lay, or dumped, unidentified into famine pits. Fortunately, some of these famine pits have since been transformed into dignified and consecrated burial places.

In this week’s edition of ‘Where the road takes me’, John Greene visits one such burial place at Kilpadder, close to Kilmacsimon Quay, and the nearby village of Innishannon.

For many years victims of the famine from around this area were buried in a small hillside field – their graves unmarked – their plight and deaths forgotten. [read more …] ““Where the Road Takes Me” on C103 at 7 This Evening”

But all of that came to a sudden halt when he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in April of 2001. Coupled with the shock, there was also a snowballing effect, when his marriage ended, he lost his job and even his perceived persona.

Putting his life on hold, he moved to West Kerry to fulfil a long postponed dream. Adamant that he lives rather than suffers from MS, he has since moved to a bigger stage.
