Our Thurles Trio

All roads lead to Thurles today for the Munster Hurling Finals where three local lads are playing for Cork. First up is Conor O’Callaghan at corner back (#2) for the Cork Minors (2pm). Then it’s the turn of Jack O’Riordan in the Primary Game. Finally Mark Ellis lines up at centre back (#6) for the Seniors against Clare (4pm). The best of luck to them all, and have a great day everyone that’s lucky enough to have tickets.

It follows on from a day when four local lads were representing Cork footballers underage: Francis Cronin, captain of the U16s; Darragh Cashman & Luke Murphy, U15s; and Eoin Sheahan, U14.

JB Hurling Championship V Lismire

Throw-in by the ref
Throw-in by the ref

Yesterday Millstreet defeated Lismire in a keenly contested Duhallow Junior B Hurling Championship in Millstreet Town Park by a scoreline of 2-7 to 0-9.

A tough but low scoring first half saw the teams deadlocked at four points a piece at half time. The heavy rain over the previous few days meant that the ball was slow to move along the ground, but Millstreet appeared to have the upper hand when the ball was off the ground and should have been ahead at the half. The start of the second half saw Millstreet move two points ahead, but then struck the killer blow with a goal and two points in quick succession seeming to secure the match. In the last few minutes Lismire tagged over three points, but it was not enough to overcome a competent Millstreet side.

They move onto the semi-final where they will meet Dromtarriffe (again) who they beat in the first round, but have been automatically byed in the semi final! Only in Duhallow. More pictures below:

U16 Hurlers win Duhallow Crown

MILLSTREET were forced to dig deep to overcome Dromtariffe in the Duhallow U16BHC Final played in Banteer.

Two well matched sides saw the closeness of the exchanges compensate and what the game lacked in quality, it made up for on intensity.

Dromtariffe had put their stamp on the game early on through the key contributions of Sean O’Callaghan, Danny Mullane, Darren O’Connor and Pa Murphy. Millstreet answered on stemming the tide with points to Paul Sheehan, Tony Cronin and Paul O’Connor.

Minor Hurlers lose in Duhallow Final

Croke Rovers put back to back Duhallow MAHC titles together after overcoming Millstreet in a keenly contested encounter in Millstreet last evening.

The ground stood up remarkably well to the incessant rain earlier in the day and at the end of the hour, Croke Rovers were full value to retain their crown. At their best, Crokes touch was good, their striking slick and intelligent.

Millstreet competed admirably all through, refusing to go away in a second half comeback. However, they lacked the overall balance required and didn’t possess the necessary penetration in attack …
