Aubane Social Club Christmas Diary

Aubane Christmas Day Morning Climb at 10.30 am on Monday 25 December – all proceeds from the Climb are in Aid of the Freeland Projects in Capetown. Local woman Maureen Buckley will travel to Capetown in March 2024. This is Maureen’s second visit and the money donated will go a long way in the building of a rescue centre. She saw first hand the poverty and lack of resources and provisions when Maureen was there in 2022. The team included plumbers, carpenters, painters and many more. They filled their suitcases with all the necessary equipment to carry out the work and left everything there when they returned home. We have so much and they have so little so everything is a huge help. Please Support this very worthy charity.

Christmas Around the Fireside a night of stories, songs and togetherness at Christmas around the open fireside in candle light at Aubane Community Centre happening Thursday 28 December at 8.00 pm All welcome.

“Radio Treasures” is on air tonight (Tues., 1st Dec. 2020) on Cork Music Station from 9.30 to 11.00.   We feature our regular items with a splendid blend of uplifting songs and music… tonight we feature a selection of songs and music with lots of variety as well as lots of interesting musings and words of wisdom.   Highlights of tonight’s programme: 

  1.  At 10pm the Virtual Launch of Millstreet Town’s Spectacular Christmas Lights by Niamh and Noreen Twomey of the Dedicated Organising Committee.
  2. Reciting of Cork’s Tony Tobin’s recently composed Poem in honour of the Star of last weekend’s “Late Late Toy Show” – Adam King from Youghal.
  3. Broadcasting a repeat of William Fitzgerald’s superb Tribute to the late Dale Haze of the Champion Showband…..From 11pm to midnight following “Radio Treasures”.
  4. Colin Paul’s splendid CDs.
  5. “On this day” feature for today Tuesday, 1st. Dec..

The Magic of Christmas Colour Arrives at The Square

We thank Niamh Twomey of “Wordsworth” for sharing this first glimpse of Christmas Magic at the Square, Millstreet…..put in place this Thursday, 26th Nov. 2020 by the combined  excellent Millstreet Branch of Cork Co. Council and the splendid Local Volunteers.  Lots more images to follow in the days to come. Christmas Midnight Mass in Millstreet 2019

Christmas Eve 2019 Midnight Mass (now celebrated at 10pm) in St. Patrick’s Church, Millstreet was concelebrated by Canon John Fitzgerald, P.P., Fr. Paddy O’Byrne and Fr. 62 Christmases in New York

Tommy Ring moved from Cullen to New York in 1957, one of many that left behind what was known as the decade of doom. He featured this week in an article about the Seniors Christmas Lunch at the New York Irish Centre:

… While measures of success can be hard to quantify, on an anecdotal level, the regulars at the New York Irish Centre appear to have had no regrets, and were able to push past feelings of homesickness and loneliness to build lives here, often ending up in Irish-centric enclaves like Woodside in Queens.

Tommy Ring, who left Millstreet, Co. Cork in 1957 as a “strapping young lad” at the age of 20, was motivated by the same thing that drove so many of Ireland’s youth over the Atlantic at that time: opportunity.

In New York, he found it in the form of a career spanning 43 years as a ramp serviceman in two of the city’s major airports; 10 of them at JFK and 33 at its sister airport, LaGuardia.
And unlike the diaspora of the previous century, there wasn’t as much of a sense of finality in moving to the US.
“I used to go back to visit [Ireland] twice a year,” he said, referencing one of the perks of working for the airports. “We got free travel after 15 years.”…
