Video: Industry in Millstreet 1987

The RTÉ Archives have recently added a new video titled “Industry in Millstreet 1987“. It was a dark time for the town after Apple Computers had left Millstreet in 1985, leaving us with high unemployment, and the Community Council were trying to encourage businesses back into Millstreet. There are interviews with the late Ken Brennan and Sgt. Seán O’Sullivan, as well as clips from around town. Click here to watch the video. Also below are some images from the video, with lots of locals recognisable:

BT Young Scientist Project on Psoriasis

What follows is an important message from one of the six groups of TY students from  Millstreet Community School who have qualified for the BT Young Scientist Exhibition which will be held in Dublin in January 2019.  They are hoping that you will be able to assist them.  Thank you, in advance…

Our project has been selected for the BT Young Scientist competition, The title of the project is ” The effects of psoriasis on adolescent mental health in 2018″  As a teenager with the condition, the topic is of personal interest to a group member and we believe that the stress it causes is overlooked in its treatment. We are interested in finding how other young people deal with the condition and would appreciate if you could complete the below survey.  Thank you.  Hannah Keane and Ria Buckley.

The Community School Under 16 soccer outfit under new coach Mr O’Síodhcháin hit the ground running and began the Munster with an emphatic win at the Town park on Monday, October 22nd. Eoin Guiney had a hat-trick before the break, and scored again in the second half in a game that was never in doubt. Opponents Newcastlewest got one back at 3-0, but Guiney’s fourth meant their second was only a consolation . Millstreet now eagerly await their next game, the Munster quarter final. [1]

Recent Language and Culture Night featured in TG4 broadcast on Sunday 20th May 2018

Those who attended the Language and Culture Night which was held in Millstreet Community School on 10th May will know that a journalist and cameraman working for TG4 were present.  They interviewed Irish teacher Ms Majella Horgan and three TY students, Jennifer Kelly, Gemma O’Regan and Katie Healy earlier in the evening.  An edited version of what they filmed will be shown on TG4 on Sunday 20th May between 7pm and 7.30pm as part of Nuacht.  The clip may only be two minutes in duration but it is good that they were able to be present to document such a worthwhile and memorable event.

Football Glory! Victory for U16 Footballers

Mr Breen’s under 16’s recorded a resounding win over the North Mon. in Mallow on May 14th and delivered the County title to the school after an impressive campaign. Millstreet began well and established a good lead early on, helped by a Dylan Sheehan goal from long range and a great point from Luke O’Donoghue after an individual run. This created daylight between the sides at half time, with Millstreet up by 1-9 to 1-3. A Darragh Cashman break then led to a Dylan Downey goal, and the same man found the net moments later, fielding a sideline and dispatching it to the net. Solid displays at full back from Colin Murphy and in goal from Daniel Hartnett saw the menacing opposition attack largely neutralised. Scorers: D. Downey 2-2; D. Sheehan 1-5; B. Murphy 0-5; L.O’Donoghue 0-1. Final score Millstreet 3-13, North Mon 1-3. The campaign opened with a win against Ballingeary, played in St John’s Pitch.

Millstreet fell behind early on with Ballingeary taking a two point lead but soon settled and grabbed the lead with two goals in the second quarter. Millstreet controlled the remainder of the game, running out 3-12 to 2-7 winners. They next faced Mayfield in the Parc Uí Chaoimh AstroTurf facility and took control early in the game, with a flurry of early goals putting the result beyond doubt. Panel: Daniel Hartnett, James Buckley, Daniel Buckley, Omar Daly, Luke O’Donoghue, Donagh Murphy, Darragh Cashman, Eoin Guiney, Darren Kiely, Dylan Downey, Dylan Kelleher, Darragh O’Riordan, Patrick Cronin, Harry Linehan, Diarmuid Cronin, Barry Murphy, Diarmuid Moynihan, Evan O’Sullivan, Cathal O’Sullivan, Adam McGroary, Finn Radamm, Ian Buckley, Jack Hanover, Joyce Sibanda, Adrian McCarron, Evan Murphy, Eoin Sheahan, Dylan Sheehan, Colin Murphy. The Millstreet Community School TY Development Education group would like to thank everyone who came along to the coffee morning on 9th March to mark International Women’s Day.  It proved to be a great opportunity to chat over a cup of tea/coffee and buns baked by the students about what life was like for women in Ireland over the years up to the present day.  All agreed that it would be great if this type of gathering happened more often.
