2013-10-09 Tom Meaney speaks at the Millstreet Community School 40th Anniversary CelebrationsChairman, Rev Fathers, Sisters, I’m very privileged to be with you here to celebrate the 40th anniversary of a successful Millstreet Community School. The years roll by and Ken (Brennan) has gone over all the problems and all the ups and downs which he went through and finally succeeded with the school as it established. But, I want to take you back further, and indeed it was a hard act to follow, and i’m trying to follow Ken. Prior to the 60s there was talk of change in education in Ireland. and it really took head in the middle of the 1960s, when there were many people in favour of changing the system, especially of secondary education. And, then they were talking about community schools, comprehensive schools, others were talking that they were a shame, that they’d be this and that as Ken explained. And, it finally came to a head in the late 60s when decisions had to be made. School Celebration of Millstreet Community School 40th Anniversary

On Wednesday, 23rd October there was a very special school celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Millstreet Community School. Principal Pat Pigott addressed the Students and Staff outlining the history of the school.   Here we note the cutting of the very impressive cake by Nora O'Sullivan whose grandmother, Nora Creedon was a wonderfully dedicated Parents' Committee Leader in the early days of the school while Donagh Murphy's grandfather, Michael O'Keeffe was superbly involved as Leader in the actual building of the school pre-1973. Superb Musical Presentation at “Trad for Trócaire”

A superb presentation of music and song by the wonderfully talented Students of Millstreet Community School on Thursday, 3rd Oct. 2013 took place at the School in aid of "Trad for Trócaire".   The splendid work of Trócaire was outlined at the end of the musical sequence.   Sincere congratulations to all who contributed to such an uplifting occasion.   We hope to share highlights of the performance on "Radio Treasures" on Tuesday week, 15th October.   (S.R.)

Trad for Trócaire event at Millstreet Community School

22Trad for Trócaire 2012A Trad for Trócaire event will take place in Millstreet Community School library on Thursday 3rd October at 8pm. It will be an evening of traditional song, music and dance, performed by members of the community school. It will also be a chance to support Trócaire’s work with the poorest of the poor in developing countries. Admission is free, although there will be a collection for Trocaire during the event. All welcome.

During the special Mass celebrated by Canon John Fitzgerald, P.P. in St. Patrick's Church this evening four deceased members of the original class of 1983 -1988 were remembered.  Following the group photograph the many Friends proceeded to the Wallis Arms Hotel to meet with further members of the Reunion Group.  Lots of great memories were recalled in advance of the meal and dance. Very Successful READ Initiative Project 2013 at Millstreet Community School

MIllstreet Community School First Year pupils (1Y Tutorial) who received their READ certificates from Principal, Pat Pigott,.  The READ initiative was set up jointly by the School and Cork Education Support Centre to encourage pupils to read for leisure.  An initial target of one million words through Word Millionaire  was set, but by the end of the project, well over four million words were read.  The School hopes to develop and expand this project next year.  Well done to all who were involved. Also included in the photo are Lucy McSweeeny and Mary Kate Murphy form Fifth Year and Second Year respectively who were the overall winners of the Senior School and Junior School Work Topper competition.      Also included in the photograph is Jennifer O’Donoghue, English Teacher.

Living Scenes Book Launch This Afternoon at Millstreet Community School

At Millstreet Community School this afternoon the official launch of "Journeying - Personal History and Works of Imagination" was
At Millstreet Community School this afternoon the official launch of “Journeying – Personal History and Works of Imagination”  took place.   This is a book by the Living Scenes Intergenerational Group at the School and has been edited by John W. Sexton, Poet.   A superb exhibition of ceramic pieces based on the theme and on a visit to the Dingle area was enjoyed by the many who attended this afternoon’s very special gathering.   Pictured here are the Group who participated, supported and co-ordinated the inspiring project.  (S.R.)

Geraldine Dennehy did a superb job in arranging the group photograph and taking the official pictures.   We at the Millstreet website thank the organisers for permitting us to share some 127 images recording the magnificent occasion.   Ken D. Wonderfully Successful Class Reunion 1973 – 1978 at Wallis Arms Hotel

A superbly organised MCS Class Reunion 1973 - 1978 took place at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Friday, 3rd May 2013.   Pádraig O'Driscoll as MC Supreme organised a most enjoyable 1970s quiz following the delicious meal awarding the winners the honour to cut the official Reunion Cake. Chaplain John Magee extends a warm welcome to Rev. David Armstrong and his wife, June at Millstreet Community School tonight.   The internationally renowned Rev. David who was so significant in “breaking the ice” during Northern Ireland’s years of challenge, delivered one of the most inspiring and moving talks ever heard in Millstreet before a wonderfully representative audience of many Christian Faiths.   We have recorded the magnificent address on both audio and video and with the very kind permission of Rev. Lourdes Cake Sale Proves Hugely Successful

To help fund the Lourdes visit of inspiring helpers from Millstreet Community School the Cake Sale in the Parish Centre following 6.30 pm Mass on Saturday, 9th February 2013 proved to be hugely popular and very successful.  Pictured (from left): Chaplain, John Magee with the three  Students who will be visiting Lourdes on Easter Sunday  to work on the praiseworthy project - Katie O'Callaghan, Millstreet with Deirdre Kelleher and Denise Cronin from Kilcorney. “Funny Money” Drama Production by Enthusiastic MCS Students Next Week

Millstreet Community School Transition Year drama group presents “Funny Money” by Ray Cooney. This hilarious comedy is guaranteed to beat the recessionary blues. Directors Jennifer O’Donoghue and Margaret Buckley have put in long hours with the cast and all the signs are that it wil be a great night’s entertainment. It will take place in the school on Tues. 22nd, Wed. 23rd and Thurs. 24th January at 8pm.
