Liam Flynn Takes Us On Tour of Toughathlon Course in Drishane

On Sunday we met with Liam Flynn who took us on tour of just some of the very challenging Toughathlon Course in the Drishane area which so impressed the many participants on Saturday's amazing Toughathlon experience. In the exquisite surroundings of the Drishane Estate Liam demonstrated just some of the serious obstacles such as the barred wire under which the participants had to crawl in the muddy ground to avoid the danger of injury. More pictures of our visit to appear later. Click on the images to enlarge. (S.R.)

Postcard of the Classroom in the School of Housecraft, at the Convent of the Holy Jesus, Drishane. The picture is from the first half of the twentieth century, but can anyone hazard a guess?

We also came across some other historical photos from Millstreet, some of which we had not seen before, on the Irish Historical Picture Company website. Seán Radley informed us that this shop used to be open in Dublin, and over the years he has purchased most of the photos for the Millstreet Museum collection.

The first Toughatlon was held in the Green Glens and Drishane last Saturday. There were lots of brave people who signed up to get wet, dirty, electric shocked and exhausted. The fact that the ground was saturated from a week of heavy rain only made it that much more interesting. One of the competitors had a GoPro camera attached to her head and have put the video of their course on youTube. (thanks to Joseph for letting us know about the video)

“I reside in Drishane Castle in Millstreet Accomodation Centre with my two children ages four and two, both born in Ireland. I arrived in Ireland in July 2008 with my husband to seek asylum. We were given deportation letters by the justice system a year later. The letters explained that as a family we were not to be separated and would be deported together.

We were asked to continually report to the GNIB office in Dublin so that our removal from the state could be facilitated. We did this for [read more …] “The Human Costs of Deportation”

Drishane Garden Fête from the 1930s

Drishane Castle Garden Fete Sunday May 30th 2010.

The Drishane Castle Garden Fete was a traditional bi annual established by the Sisters of the Infant Jesus during their time in Drishane Convent 1909 – 1992. It was staged as a fund raiser for the Missions.
It was always an event held close to people’s hearts, attracting crowds of supporters from near and far. Sadly the tradition died when the Sisters’ time in Drishane came to an end, the last one was staged in May 1990 exactly 20 years ago.

2010 sees the revival of the Garden Fete on Sunday May 30th 1pm – 6pm. It promises to be a day of great festivity and celebration. It co incidentally corresponds with the Polish Celebration of “Children’s Day” further ensuring that it will be a fun filled day for all members of the family. The Committee is delighted to offer an afternoon of quality entertainment for all members of the family while also helping Baby Jacob in his lifetime challenge of blindness.
