On last Wednesday night in Pairc Ui Rinn Millstreet GAA Club presented a cheque of €1,000.00 to the “Friends of Kieran Fund” which had been raised at the Poc Fada held on March 18th in aid of Kieran O’Connor, Cork County football player, who is ill and undergoing treatment at the moment. The fundraising event which was organised by the club and in particular, Michael Murphy, was very well supported and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who participated, made donations and assisted with stewarding on the day. The presentation was made before the Charity Benefit game between Cork and Kilkenny in Pairc Ui Rinn.
Millstreet added to their sequence of wins to collect the Co. Senior Scór Table Quiz Final hosted in the Eire Óg GAA Pavilion, Ovens. On doing so, Millstreet collected their 24th title since 1994. Team members on this occasion were Con and Mary Meade, Jerry Doody, and John Tarrant.
Interestingly, Millstreet natives figured on other competing teams, Michael Creedon, part of a Kinsale team placed third and Denis McSweeney was involved with Carbery Rangers.
Completing a great night for Duhallow was Boherbue retaining their Co. Scór na nÓg Table Quiz title. Boherbue and Millstreet progress to represent Cork in the All Ireland Scór Finals in Castlebar.
Today, the Munster Scór na nÓg Finals take place in Cappoquin, best of luck to Kate O’Sullivan and the Cullen Ballad Group, both representing Cork after terrific wins in the Co. On Sunday, 23rd September 2018 the annual GAA Hurling Games for the Connie Kelleher Memorial Trophy, the Tommy O’Connor and Alan O’Connor Memorial Trophies took place in splendid weather at Millstreet Town Park. This year a magnificent Trophy in memory of the late Connie Hickey (who was a dedicated Coach) was introduced and presented by the Hickey Family. The event was superbly organized with the inclusion of Millstreet Pipe Band, the flying of the National Flag and the presentations at the GAA Community Hall followed by excellent refreshments for everyone. A huge attendance was in evidence with many people travelling from afar for the special occasion. The dedicated Committee with such people as Mag O’Connor and John O’Riordan and many others ensured a most successful annual event. Here we share the first of our pictorial recordings from the uplifting occasion. Click on the images to enlarge. (S.R.) A few months previously he and Eoin O’Sullivan had been part of the Cork Vocational Schools Football Team that also won the All-Ireland.

The goalie for Cork that day Kevin O’Dwyer, is now based in Cullen and is one of the trainers for the Duarigle Gaels (Millstreet+Cullen) underage teams.

Millstreet GAA Club will host its 5th Annual Golf Classic on Friday next 14th September in Mahoney Point, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. This event has proved to be a very successful and enjoyable day and the funds raised are used for the development of our players. The organising committee of Anthony Dennehy, Declan Crowley, Donagh Hickey, Cian O’Mahony & Noel Crowley have ensured the success of the event and it gives former members and players of our Club an opportunity of meeting in a relaxed and social atmosphere.
The Golf Classic could not be held without the support of our generous sponsors and Millstreet Club wishes to acknowledge the 6 main sponsors of the day – Cloverhill Foods, Colemans Millstreet, Tarrant’s Bar, Eamonn McCaul Mechanical Services, Claramore Construction and Donagh Hickey Motors. We also wish to thank the business of Millstreet and surrounding areas who sponsor tee boxes and greens, the support of each of these businesses is appreciated by the club as we are fully aware of the financial demands that are made on businesses on a daily basis. To all the teams that are playing we look forward to meeting you on the Friday and we wish you the best of luck and thank you for your continued support.
Cork Hurling History today remembers: “on this day in 1903 Cork and Kerry met in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship Semifinal, was played at the Sports Field in Millstreet. This was the first meeting of the counties since the 1892 Championship. The newspaper reports of the day did not provide much details of the scorers, but Cork opened with 2 points before striking for their first major and then rattled off 6 unanswered points before Kerry got their first point of the game. The halftime score line was Cork 1-08 to 0-01 for Kerry. The second half saw Cork open the scoring with their second goal and went on to seal a comfortable victory on a final score of Cork 2-11 to 0-03 for Kerry. This match was played in conjunction with the delayed 1902 Munster Senior Hurling Championship and Cork advanced to a Munster Final meeting with Limerick.”
