Millstreet GAA Players Fundraising Race Night in The Bush Bar

On Friday night last 17th November 2017 Millstreet GAA Players held a fundraising Race Night in conjunction with the Bush Bar. This was a very successful event and enjoyed by all. This function was well supported, and it was great to see so many players in attendance.
The organising committee would like to thank everyone that sponsored this event and helped in anyway in making it a successful night. A special thank you to Connie Hickey, Kelly Cronin, and Sheila Barrett for all their help and support.

Millstreet Vintage Club Vintage and Family Fun Day an Outstanding Success.

Millstreet Vintage Club and Cancer Connect would like to thank Everybody that came out to Support our Show on Sunday last. The Show which was thankfully Blessed with fine weather was an outstanding success with great support on the the day, over 150 vehicles were on display and to all the people that brought out there beautiful exhibits from both near and far. We thank each and every one of you for making the journey, to all the club members who helped out and worked very hard both on the lead up to the event and on the day itself many many thanks. To everybody that helped in anyway no matter how big or small we thank you all very much, to Millstreet GAA, the Town Park Committee, and Millstreet Soccer Club we are most grateful for the use of a top class venue and facilities, without your help and support the event would not have been the success that it was. A very big thank you to all our very generous sponsors who very kindly donated great prizes for our draw. To Sgt. Paul Lynch and his team, we thank them very much for keeping traffic flow and parking facilities running like clockwork, to the Millstreet Fire Brigade Crew for providing us with their time and for giving an insight into the skills and dedication of their challenging job, to the Broomhill Tractor Build Team for bringing their Championship Winning Tractor Build to the Show, to the Millstreet Pipe Band, and to Danny and Pat of Back on Track for providing great Music and Entertainment. To all the People who turned up with exhibits, food stalls, entertainment for the kids etc, to the media who did a great job in getting the word out there, including John Tarrant of The Corkman, C103 Mallow, Millstreet.ie Website, Corkmusicstation, Seán Radley, Willie Fitzgerald, LTV2, Eily Buckley, Andrew Pollock and Team of Irish Vintage Scene, Tom Corbett and Matthew Twomey. Death Notice: Jerry O’Keeffe, Dublin & Mill Lane

O’KEEFFE (Castleknock, Dublin, and formerly of Mill Lane, Millstreet) June 2nd., 2017 (peacefully) in the loving care of the staff at Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross, Jeremiah (Jerry), beloved husband of Bernadette and dear father of Catriona, Des, Evelyn and Ann Marie. Deeply regretted by his loving family, brother John, his cherished grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. May he rest in peace.

Reposing at Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross on Monday evening (5th. June) between 4 o’c and 6 o’c. Removal on Tuesday morning (6th. June) to The Church of Our Lady Mother of the Church, Castleknock, arriving for Requiem Mass at 11 o’c followed by private cremation in Mount Jerome Crematorium. Family flowers only, please. Donations if desired, to Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross.

Shane and Evan played with the Cork Minors last night

Commiserations to Shane Hickey (Millstreet) and Evan Murphy (Dromtarriffe) who played with the Cork Minors who lost the Munster Minor semi-final last night to Kerry, but it’s great vindication for the local clubs to see more of our lads making the grade and playing in the Cork geansaí. The very best of luck to Shane Hickey (Millstreet) and Evan Murphy (Dromtarriffe) who take part in this evening’s Electric Ireland Munster Minor Football Championship Quarter-Final for Cork against Tipperary this evening in Thurles.

Evan is picked at centre forward while Shane is listed amongst the subs.

Cork v Tipperary, Wednesday 12th April, 2017 @ 7pm, at Semple Stadium, Thurles, extra time if necessary.

Result: Cork 3-21 Tipperary 1-8 🙂

Millstreet GAA Predictor – Final Result

The Final Results of the Millstreet GAA Predictor are in and it came down to the wire with the final event proving the difference! Declan Crowley’s choice of Glen Rovers lifted him to the summit and the €500 first place prize.

Second place was shared by Eileen Roche and Eoin O’Sullivan tied on 57 points with both receiving €125. Con Cotter also had 57 points but missed out on a prize as Eileen and Eoin had more “Other” selections to get to 57 points.

County Football Champions 1990 & 1991

1990 Duhallow Senior Football Team
County Champions
Captained by Danny Cullotty.
November 4th 1990 was a red letter day for gaelic games here in Duhallow as our divisional senior footballers annexed the cork county senior championship title, and thus bridging a gap of 54,years with a two point victory in a dour struggle over st Finbarr at Pairc Uí Chaoimh.
The 1988 finalists opened their successful campaign with a comprehensive victory 2-18/2-6 over Carrigdhoun, followed up with a 2-11/1-5, triumph over O’Donovan Rossa.
Mighty Nemo Rangers threw down the gauntlet to the barony in the semi final, but Duhallow qualified for the decider with a 4-5/1-9 triumph, goals coming from Anthony Barry, Jimmy Dennehy, Timmy Healy& Richard Dennehy.
The decider against St.Finbarr on a cool November afternoon 30 years ago brought a attendance of 10,979 to Cork GAA headquarters.
And it proved a pretty close affair St Finbarr sailing into a three point lead inside ten minutes but it took a super save from goalie and man of the match Jerry Pat O’Leary midway through the opening half to thwart the city boys. Duhallow had the edge at midfield in the first half through its captain Danny Cullotty and Jerome Walsh, they led 0-4/0-3 at the interval.
Paddy Hayes came well into the game in the second half at midfield for St Finbarr but Duhallow never floundered and with Jerry Pat pulling off a tremendous save, one sensed then was Duhallow day of destiny and when referee Joe O’Leary blew the final whistle scenes of joy and emotion greeted the new county champions on a 0-8/0-6 triumph.
What a moment it was as victorious captain Danny Cullotty held aloft the Andy Scannell trophy.
This most coveted championship was now wresting in Duhallow.
A huge crowd turned out to greet the team in Newmarket on its arrival home after the game and the celebrations continued through out the week with big receptions in Kiskeam, Kanturk, Millstreet & Knocknagree.
This historic victory also saw Danny Culloty become cork s new captain the first Duhallow player to achieve this since Millstreet’s John O’Keeffe in 1949.
And John is still hale and hearty and now resides at Teach Altra nursing home in Newmarket.

The Millstreet team which won the Cork County Senior Football Championship when defeating St. Vincent’s in 1948 on a scoreline of 1-2 to 0-3.

The Cup comes to Millstreet

Nineteen forty eight was the date of the year
Our young football team on the field did appear
They won from Dunmanway right down to Fermoy
And the city of Cork they went out to defy
On the banks of the Lee on an October day
For the County Cup we went for to play

Ten to one were the odds on that great City team
Our men were too soft and our boys were too green
With Den Connors midfield and the brave O’Keeffe brothers
Those brave city lads would soon sigh for their mothers
Still they put down the cash to humble our pride
And send us home beaten to the Blackwater side

Our team lost the wind to the toss of a coin
So St. Vincent’s they planned for to lick us in time
Then Munty tried hard for to stop the attack
But the first point they scored put our nerves on the rack
The play was resumed at the kick-out of the ball
When Kelleher Pound Hill got a very bad fall

Then on to the field the sub Dennehy came
Sub or no sub he played a fine game
We went on defending till the half-whistle blew
Then of points we were nil, but St. Vincent’s had two

Jim Manley he proved a true friend indeed
Young Kelleher thought of sweet Minor Row
And he scores a fine goal with the tip of his toe
Then Cork’s ardent backers fell into despair
While Millstreet’s supporters flung their hats in the air

St. Vincent’s they rushed on their major attack
But Dineen and O’Driscoll knew how to hit back
Still they sent in the ball to the mouth of the goal
Denis Manning with honours put his name on the ball
With excitement the sidelines by now had gone mad
They were betting their shirts and what money they had

Five minutes to go with our team in the lead
Our opponents displayed all their old keen breed
They rushed and they fought in the air and the ground
‘Twas then Jerry Connor showed himself sound
When at last came the whistle with a cheer for full time
Old Millstreet were champions till 1949

Then home by Macroom over many a mile
All gay and light-hearted we wore a bright smile
The bonfires were blazing in our dear native town
And even old Claragh looked lovingly down
By our priests and our people the welcome was great
We have brought home the Cup for 1948
