Mass on Clara Mountain in May 2000 & Plaque Unveiling

Millstreet Museum Society  and Millstreet Website Team very much appreciate the wonderfully uplifting generous response to our recent Church Gate Collection in Millstreet.   The €2, 275.98 + €50.00 will greatly permit us maintain the two important local resources….meeting the costs (re the website) of web server and domain name….and (re Museum) the costs of insurance, heating, lighting and ongoing development.   Special thanks to Millstreet Community Council and Millstreet Local Lottery for splendid support.   And to those who contributed from abroad and who have direct Millstreet links – grateful thanks to All.   One may assist anytime throughout the year by using our dedicated Bank Account the number of which is: IBAN – IE22 BOFI 9058 0334 0531 43 & BIC – BOFIIE2D.

And so to our most recent delving into our Visual Archive of Millstreet Museum.   The date is 21st May 2000 when hundreds of people climbed (or were transported on the back of Tony Healy’s Tractor!) Clara Mountain marking the 50th Anniversary of the placement of the original Cross on Clara Mountain in 1950.   Mass was concelebrated in the presence of Millstreet Pipe Band and a wide cross section of people from near and far.   It was Tadhg O’Driscoll who unveiled the official stone plaque.   Here we share some 24 images from the truly historic occasion.  Click on the pictures to enlarge.  (S.R.) We thank Eily Buckley, John Tarrant and Sharon Lane for superbly assisting us in the promotion of this coming weekend’s Church Gate Collection in aid of Millstreet Museum and Millstreet Website.   As this annual collection is our only real source of funding for these two local resources your generous support is all-important and greatly appreciated.   We also thank our wonderfully loyal supporters and helpers who stand with us at both Masses on this weekend – 6:30pm Mass on Sat. 3rd Aug. and 11:30am Mass on Sunday, 4th August.   Below we share a selection of images including pictures from our Archive 2000 Collection.   Click on the images to enlarge.  (S.R.)  We begin with JohnTarrant’s excellent “Corkman” report regarding our Annual Collection:

Pictures from the Past from Millstreet Museum Pictorial Archives

It is indeed a very real source of encouragement to initiate a regular feature from Millstreet Museum Pictorial Archives when we hear such uplifting comments from many people including Seán Barrett who enjoy our featuring of Pictures from the Past that we should consider delving into our Archive on a regular basis.   And, yes, this is what we hope to do as we gradually approach a New Year.  Thanks to Myra at the Museum we have digitalised several thousand photos ranging back decades which will be available to this and future generations.   To begin our regular feature we firstly caption the image we recently shared:

New York Poet Patrick Most Impressed by National Dairy Show 2018

Renowned Poet Patrick Thomas Hammer from New York is presently paying his yearly visit to Ireland and especially to his Millstreet Relations – the O’Rahilly Family of Tanyard Wood.   We thank Patrick for the presentation of his most recent Book of Poetry to the Museum.   He is blessed with such a wonderful sense of humour and is so superbly witty.  He is a magnificent Ambassador for America and so impressively proud of his Irish roots.   As well as visiting Millstreet Museum on Saturday, 20th Oct. 2018 he was truly impressed by a visit to the excellent National Dairy Show at Green Glens – an event which this year received RTÉ television national News coverage.  On a future “Radio Treasures” on CMS we shall feature a special interview with Patrick in which he recalls a splendid visit to John C. Casey’s New York shop.  Here we join Patrick on his Millstreet visit.   Click on the 27 images to enlarge.  (S.R.)

Now that’s a very happy photograph!  Poet Patrick with his O’Rahilly Relatives and Friends before visiting the Museum and the National Dairy Show.   There is always such a royal welcome for everyone at the home of Michael and Betty O’Rahilly.   Brendan Murphy provided a most enjoyable Video Presentation of some of our most popular LTV2 programmes….including our snow coverage, storm reports, wind turbines and lots more.
A little surprised how big Millstreet is….on the map!

Two Further Historic Gems Kindly Presented to Millstreet Museum

This magnificent Tapestry of President John F. Kennedy with the Statue of Liberty and the American Flag was first purchased in Germany in 1965. It has been kindly donated to Millstreet Museum by the Randles Family of Minor Row in memory of the late Paul Fitzgerald who bravely served in the American Air Force. Click on the images to enlarge. This wonderful framed portrait of Pope Pius XI was presented by Jerry who dedicatedly restored the historic image. This Pope was in Rome during the Eucharistic Congress of 1932 which was held in Dublin. As Popes did not leave the Vatican to travel abroad at that time he sent his Papal Legate – Cardinal Lorenzo Lauri. Many children born that year in Ireland had Lauri as part of their Christian Name. Wonderfully Generous Response to Millstreet Museum & Millstreet Website Church Gate Collection 2018

Sincere thanks to all who so very kindly contributed to last weekend’s church gate collection 2018 for Millstreet Museum and Millstreet Website which amounted to €2,302.17 (plus €25.00 cheque from Tralee this morning). Such generous support is greatly appreciated.  This uplifting amount was made up from the contributions at Millstreet church gate collection of €2,082.17 plus very kind donations presented from abroad and also from local people who delivered such donations before and after our annual church gate collection of €220.00.   This money will very much assist us in the continuation of running our Museum (insurance, heating, lighting and developments) and our Website (server and domain costs).   Having Myra Sheehan assisting in our Museum under a Government Scheme has meant such a lot and we only so wish such a hugely valuable Scheme could be extended.   We’re sincerely thankful to our Website Team (pictured below) who give of their talents and time entirely on a spontaneous manner to help maintain one of the most highly regarded community websites in Ireland.  We renew our appeal to our Website Visitors national and international who may wish to support our work anytime during the year.   For this purpose we’ve set up a Bank of Ireland facility where one can contribute if one wishes at any time. We have arranged to set up an electronic system with the Bank of Ireland here in Millstreet (where our Museum/Website account exists) whereby anyone can transfer a desired donation to the account by just quoting at one’s own Bank our relevant numbers which are: IBAN No.: IE22 BOFI 9058 0334 0531 43 and the BIC No.:  BOFIIE2D. We are most grateful to the many people who have very kindly used this method of support over the past year. It gives a real opportunity especially to those living abroad to assist us in our efforts to continue the services of Millstreet Museum and Millstreet Community Website.  We now share a selection of images from last weekend’s church gate collection.  Click on the images to enlarge.  (S.R.)

Annual Collection in Support of Millstreet Museum & Millstreet Website This Coming Weekend 4th & 5th August 2018

Because this annual collection is our only source of funding to maintain our Museum/Tourist Information Centre plus our only way of maintaining our Millstreet Website www.millstreet.ie – we very much appreciate support at our Church gate Collection this coming weekend (4th & 5th August 2018) outside St. Patrick’s Church, Millstreet. We’ve always only held our Collection in Millstreet but if people in the Ballydaly and Cullen areas wish to support our efforts also it would indeed help to further enhance our services. Our main costings at the Museum are for insurance, heating, lighting and limited development. Our Millstreet website costs are for annual subscriptions to our Server and also for the use of our .ie domain name. All those involved in both the Museum and the Website gladly work on a voluntary basis like so many others involved in other local organisations promoting the Community Spirit for which Millstreet has oftentimes been much praised. Thanking you in anticipation of such wonderful continuing support – Seán Radley on behalf of Millstreet Museum Society and the Millstreet Website Team.

Terence McSwiney Historic Badge at Millstreet Museum

On this Sunday, 21st August 2016 President Michael D. Higgins will officially open the new state-of-the-art Independence Museum at Kilmurry (near Lissarda) following his delivery of the Michael Collins oration at nearby Béal na Bláth (at which Millstreet Pipe Band perform annually).  The original Kilmurry Museum was named the Terence McSwiney Museum because of his close connection with the area.   Several years ago before the official opening of Millstreet Museum in 1980 I recall visiting that impressive Museum where Mrs. O’Sullivan gave me such a wonderful welcome and provided a superb guided tour of the splendid Centre.  To mark this Sunday’s historic event we here feature from our Lucey-Coleman Collection at Millstreet Museum a truly historic Terence McSwiney & Family Badge – part of a larger selection of important medals and badges.   We hope to share images from this Sunday’s Kilmurry event at a later point. Incidentally, due to further very generous contributions towards our recent annual church gate collection for Millstreet Museum and Millstreet Website – our final amount has reached a much appreciated €1,820.00 for which we are truly grateful. Click on the images to enlarge.  (S.R.)3Terence McSwiney Badge at Millstreet Museum -6002Terence McSwiney Badge at Millstreet Museum -6004Terence McSwiney Badge at Millstreet Museum -6001Terence McSwiney Badge at Millstreet Museum -600
