Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1151 from Millstreet. Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this cold, icy, snowy, wintery Tuesday Morning.

This morning we send our best wishes to the lovely Sheila O Riordan formerly of Ballydaly and now at Teach Altra, on celebrating her 100th birthday. Her family and friends have planned a gala party to mark her big event, and we wish her continued health and happiness in the future.

All are invited to the Official opening of our E Centre in the Town Square on to-morrow Wednesday at 3.30 pm.

The Annual Machinery Show which was held at the Green Glens Arena for two days last week drew great crowds, and exhibitors were very pleased with the results. Local businesses also benefited from the extra crowds that it brought into town.

Next up at the same venue will be the spectacular Bride and Groom Show on February 9/10th.

Dia is Mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1148 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best as I welcome you all to the year 2013, on this nice calm Tuesday morning.

Christmas is over for another year and life is returning to normal as we head off into the New Year. We had a wonderful Christmas, in that we had no sensations or tragedies during the Festive Season.  Our streets were lit up in a manner which our town could afford and the shops and services did well.

Local Voluntary bodies made every effort to make it a good Christmas for everyone. Church services were a joy, with all three churches of the parish brightly lit and suitably decorated, and well trained choirs filling them with the message of Christmas. All the Schools did the story of Christmas.

150 people did the annual Christmas Day Climb of Mushera Mountain on Christmas Day and raised great money in aid of Suicide Awareness.

Our lovely Pipe Band played in the New Year in their own inimitable way as they do every year.

2013-01-06 Blackwater Way – Map for Mushera to Bweeing

The Blackwater Way (the combined Duhallow and Avondhu Ways) is a 168 kilometre linear long distance walking route that stretches from the borders of west County Waterford across north County Cork and into the County of Kerry, following the valley of the River Blackwater. It in turn is part of the European E8 route which stretches from Kenmare to Bulgaria (some 4,300km). Here we highlight part of the route near Millstreet, from Mushera to Bweeing, a route which is described on WalkingRoutes.ie

“This is the complete section from the pub at Bweeng to the Carpark at Mushera (at the highest point of the butter road). The sections across Mossy Bed and Nadd Bog are very wet all year round. Forest operations at the start of the Nadd bog section means that the way markings are [read more …] “Blackwater Way – Trail from Mushera to Bweeng”

Jack Lane Speaks at the Kerryman’s Table on 19th August 2012

Historian supreme, Jack Lane gave an outstanding address at the Kerryman’s Table, Mushera, Millstreet at noon on Sunday, 19th August 2012.   Jack emphasised the importance of the Butter Road and gave a very interesting history of the famous Road.   It was held during Heritage Week 2012 as well as on the very same Sunday as the celebration of the centenary of Aubane N.S..  (S.R.)

While it was raining for part of Jack’s address this did not dampen the spirits of all who attended on the Sunday at this wonderfully picturesque setting.   Jack also introduced [read more …] “Jack Lane Speaks at the Kerryman’s Table on 19th August 2012”

The Narrow Mountain Roadway

Across so many bridges above river, stream and rill
Up the steep rise from Rylane to Mushera and to Aubane downhill
And on uphill to Tullig the road winds up and down
The back road from Cork City that leads to Millstreet Town.

A narrow mountain roadway through the hilly countryside
Through a rugged scenic valley that is known far and wide
Since tourists from all Nations have often passed this way
The scenery breathtaking on a clear and windless day.

The Great Hero Of Mushera

He was the great hero of Mushera the All Ireland two mile hurdle champion of nineteen hundred and ten
I knew him when i was a youngster he was showing the wear of time then
He did not have to boast of his achievements his great record did say it all
When Duhallow old timers talked of famous athletes Paddy Keeffe’s name was one they did recall
.
In two mile hurdles in his prime in Ireland he was the number one athlete
But he never went to the Olympics Ireland then as a team did not compete [read more …] “The Great Hero Of Mushera”

The Narrow Road By Old Mushera

The narrow road by old Mushera it winds up and down
The backway from Cork through Rylane that ends at Millstreet Town
In Winter the drivers crawl slow through the fog
That steals down the mountain and cloaks Togher Bog
But the scenery is breathtaking on a nice Summer’s day
For the tourist who drives on the mountain roadway
The Boggeragh Ranges above you the valley below
By the hills where gorse, heather and bracken do grow
Where in Spring and in Summer the male lark does fly
Up from the rank bracken to sing in the sky
A small speck in the universe till in gray clouds he disappear
The bird out of sight though his music one hear
On the narrow high road by Mushera from here far away
The tourist amazed at the beauty today.

About 40 brave souls that ventured to the top of Mushera Mountain for the annual Christmas Day Climb in aid of the Baby Jacob Trust Fund (click to see the full picture).

Despite the roads being treacherous because of rain freezing when it hit the ground, there was a good crowd who were all in good spirits. The ground was hard and icy, but the heather was good for getting grip. Thankfully it stopped raining for most of the walk, except for the last few minutes on the way down, and the wind was not as strong as it has been in the past, but the mountain was shrouded in cloud while we were up there. At the top, and on behalf of the Baby Jacob Trust Fund Jerry Pat O’Leary thanked everyone for their efforts in the difficult weather.

Wishing everyone a very happy and a peaceful Christmas.

Into God’s Eye at Musheramore

Cross on top of Mushera, looking south-west towards West Cork

Our condolences go to the family of  Paddy Mulcahy from Cork who died while out walking on Musheramore just above the Millstreet Country Park last Sunday September 13th during the recent fine spell. His son Thomás has written about this on his blog.

Paddy died suddenly on a lovely sunny September day in a beautiful spot called Musheramore, a small hill in northeast Cork, near Millstreet, while out hillwalking with his wife and friends.

Scenery from Mushera July 2005

I stumbled across some pictures on flickr.com taken around Mushera Mountain and St John’s Well in July 2005 by a visitor to the area. I just thought some of ye might like to see them. The photography is simple but good, and even though the weather was dull, it shows Mushera as it’s beautiful peaceful self. I’ve put in a couple of the photo’s below, but you can see them all as a slide-show if you follow this link:
