TechWorks Festival at Green Glens Attracts Huge Young Audience

It’s rare to see double decker buses in Millstreet but on Sat. 16th March 2019 a number of them were part of the transport bringing huge numbers of enthusiastic young people to Green Glens for the annual TechWorks Festival.  Participants travelled from many parts of Ireland and some came from the UK also.  The event commences shortly after midday and ended at midnight.   The occasion was very well coordinated and security was most professional.   Such was the volume of the modern music that it echoed beyond Green Glens.   Clearly it was a happy and enjoyable occasion for the great number of participants.  We thank Thomas, Pat and Muireann and the TechWorks organisers for permitting us to share images from the very colourful event.  Click on the pictures (almost 40) to enlarge.  (S.R.) Magnificent Adrivale Painters Exhibition at Cork’s School of Music

On Friday, 5th Oct. 2018 at Cork’s School of Music, Union Quay the official launch of the Adrivale Painters Exhibition took place in the presence of many Artists, the Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork, Family and Friends including a visiting Bishop, famous Sports People and a gifted pianist from Ardmore, Co. Waterford.   The official launch was performed by the Deputy Lord Mayor while the keynote address was superbly delivered by Seán O’Riordan (formerly of Drishane Road, Millstreet) in which he very especially praised the Art Teacher Supreme – Neil Kelleher of “Adrivale”, South Douglas Road, Cork. We very much recommend a visit to the excellent Exhibition before it ends in the School of Music at the end of this week.  Below we share the first of a number of images recalling the most enjoyable launch which actually coincided with a wonderful Concert in the same building that night celebrating the Cork Folk Festival 2018.  Click on the image to enlarge.  (S.R.)

RTE’s “Ceilí House” from Rockchapel on Sat. 0ct. 20 and 27

The RTE radio one programme ‘Ceilí House’ will come from Bruach na Carraige, Rockchapel, on Saturday, 20th and Saturday, 27th October after the 9pm News.  It will feature the Rockchapel Comhaltas based group, Ceoltoirí Sliabh Luachra, performing some of Sliabh Luachra’s oldest music.  Much of this music comes from the manuscripts of Dave Dan Curtin of Stagmount, Rockchapel and the manuscripts of his father, Dan Curtin that go back to before 1850, and contain an older layer of Sliabh Luachra music that predates the polkas and slides that characterise the area now, and also from the manuscripts of Dave Leahy of Mountcollins who died in 1907.

We thank Jack Roche for this important notice.  (S.R.)

“Music from The Manuscripts” in Bruach Na Carraige Rockchapel

The Rockchapel based group Ceoltóirí Sliabh Luachra will present their new show “Music from The Manuscripts” in Bruach Na Carraige Rockchapel on Friday the 16th of March at 8.30pm.
This show is a celebration of the music of local musicians Dave Dan Curtin of Stagmount Rockchapel, and his father Dan Curtin, and their neighbour Dave Leahy Secondgloss Mountcollins who died in 1907
The manuscripts from all three were recently discovered, Dan Curtin’s from the National Traditional Music Archive in Dublin. They date back to before 1850. They give us an important glimpse of an older layer of Sliabh Luachra Music that predates that what prevails today, with many tunes that have not been heard or heard of for over one hundred years. Dave Dan`s and Dave Leahy`s manuscripts were donated to the Bruach Na Carraige Archive, by the late Margaret O’Brien a daughter of Dave Dans of Elsberry Missouri in the US. They also contain tunes not heard anymore. These manuscripts illustrate the high quality of our traditional musicians around Rockchapel over one hundred and fifty years ago and their ability to produce such quality manuscripts at that time is amazing.

We thank Jack Roche for this Notice of the Upcoming Musical Event.  (S.R.)

Millstreet Welcomes American Visitors Who Have Local Connections

At the home of Mary Fahy (nee Forde) in Murphy’s Terrace, Millstreet we extend a heartfelt welcome to Patricia from Dayton, Ohio, USA who has Dennehy roots in Kilmeedy and O’Leary roots in Adrivale. Pat was accompanied by her husband and by Friends, Diane and Fred. All enjoyed a wonderful musical interlude with the Cronin Family of Laught at Mary’s very welcoming home. Click on the images to enlarge. (S.R.)

Pictured at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Sunday night splendid American visitors with their McSweeney Family connections. Most of the guests are from Boston while one (Donny) is from South Carolina. The Irish connection springs from the Daly sisters of Lomanaugh (near Boherbue). From left: Donny, Sally, Nora Dennehy, Michael, Nuala and Sarah McSweeney, Blair, Lisa and Kathleen. The Visitors are also scheduled to visit Tallow, Co. Waterford where we hope they will have a wicked (!) enjoyable time! The only two places of which we are aware that use the word “wicked” meaning “very” seem to be Co. Waterford …. and Boston!
