Gerard O’Meara’s Superb Photographic Exhibition in Mallow
At Mallow Library in July 2024 a truly magnificent Photographic Exhibition displaying just some of the pictorial gems of renowned Mallow Photographer, Gerard O’Meara took place in the presence of a large gathering during which Gerard’s 80th Birthday was wonderfully celebrated. The Exhibition remained open for a number of weeks and received many visitors for whom so many splendid memories were evoked on viewing Gerard’s historical images and marvellously creative photographs. He has very kindly donated a most impressive archive of his work to Cork Library Department. Now, launching on this Monday, 25th Nov. 2024 in Mallow’s West End Gallery at 6pm one will have a further opportunity of viewing a selection of Gerard’s truly outstanding photographic work. Opening times for the Exhibition are as follows: Tuesday 26th. – Friday 29th Nov. 1.30pm – 5 pm.
Saturday 30th Nov. 11am – 4 pm.
Closed : Sunday 1st. – Tuesday 3rd. December.
Wednesday 4th. – Friday 6th. December 1.30pm – 5 pm.

We go on a brief “Snow Tour” in the Millstreet area. We share images from Sat. night and Sunday (24th Jan. 2021) when Snow arrived. We begin with two images kindly provided by Brian Kelleher, Aubane which he recorded at the foot of Mushera and at its Cross at the summit of the challenging mountain climb. Spectacular Bealach Images Above the Fog Today
As we all experienced on this Sunday, 29th Nov. 2020 a Foggy Day in Millstreet Town (!) it was quite a different story on the wonderful heights of Bealach area above Ballydaly. And we’re most fortunate that some six superb images have been shared by Mary, Dan and John O’Riordan of Ballydaly where we note a beautiful sunny day above the fog which gives the impression that one is almost observing the sea below the trees and fields. We share a selection of images recorded today (Fri. 16th Oct. 2020) mainly in Millstreet Town Park where we experienced a double rainbow and the fascinating colours of Autumn 2020. Before that we have been requested to help to promote a forthcoming praiseworthy event:
A Coffee Morning/Afternoon is scheduled to take place at Guerin’s Family Shop in Ballydaly on Saturday, 24th Oct. from 10am to 6pm & on Sunday, 25th Oct. 10.30am to 1.00pm…..in aid of St. Joseph’s Community Hospital, Millstreet. Tea, Coffee, Latte, Drinking Chocolate and Cappuccino served. This event will take place only if COVID-19 Restrictions allow.
Today Issue 28 of “Discover Duhallow” appeared in the shops and includes a superb feature written by Daniel Daly who is Manager supreme and Personal Trainer at Millstreet Community Gym. Tap on the images to enlarge. (S.R.)

Tubrid Holy Well Feature on “Irish Catholic” This Week
Photographer supreme, Valerie O’Sullivan recently visited Tubrid Holy Well where she captured a wonderful selection of images one of which features on the front page of this week’s “Irish Catholic” national newspaper (20th Aug. 2020). Also included is a photographic feature within the popular weekly newspaper. Valerie’s images oftentimes appear on booklets, calendars etc. within the Diocese of Kerry and far beyond….as well as on national and international newspapers. It was Valerie who took the world famous picture of the laughing Queen Elizabeth with Pat O’Connell at Cork’s English Market. Pat Breen who coordinates the distribution of the Catholic Papers here in Millstreet Parish indicates that extra copies of the “Irish Catholic” will soon be available in St. Patrick’s Church, Millstreet. Millstreet Carnival Fancy Dress Parade Autumn 1951
We thank Annabelle O’Sullivan, Jerry O’Regan and Hannelie O’Connor for arranging to share this truly superb image of Millstreet Carnival Fancy Dress Parade in the Autumn of 1951 (the year I was born!). Most likely the picture was taken by Frank Reen (Snr.) outside his Pharmacy looking across the road to the O’Regan Family home and capturing two young participants in the Parade. Members of the O’Regan Family, the Reen Family and the Justice Family are seen in the background of the image. Caherbarnagh (or Cahirbearna) is part of the chain of mountains which stretches westward from Millstreet to Killarney. Its name means “the hill of the four gaps”.
