Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind Fundraising This Friday

On this Friday, 24th May 2024, Eileen Tarrant and her dedicated Team will be fundraising from 9am to 4pm outside Coleman’s Centra Supermarket, Minor Row, Millstreet in aid of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.  Eileen will be having many relevant items for sale and will be joined by two canine friends.  She especially welcomes anyone who would like to join her at any time during the 9 to 4 fundraising period for this wonderfully praiseworthy occasion.

This was the occasion in August 2023 when the official cheque was presented following the uplifting fundraising efforts of the dedicated local group:

“With the Annual Open Day taking place today, Saturday, 26th August 2023 at the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind national headquarters on Model Farm Road, Cork T12 WT4A to which all are very welcome, a very special gathering of people from the Millstreet Parish area travelled there yesterday to present the very impressive cheque of €2,018.00 to the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind – the fruits of the fundraising some months ago which involved the production and selling of the excellent Music CD “A Millstreet Collection Volume Two” – comprising of thirty various Artists most of whom had direct Millstreet links.  This CD fundraising project was the inspiring work of Paddy Murphy, Tullig.   The second important fundraising event, wonderfully coordinated by Eileen Tarrant and her superbly dedicated Team involved a full day’s fundraising Collection outside Coleman’s Centra, Minor Row, Millstreet where a royal welcome was accorded by Mary and John Coleman during which the generous response from the public was quite remarkable.   Here we share an image of the presentation with further images to follow later.  Tap on the picture to enlarge.  (S.R.)

Chris Bennett, Regional Development Officer, Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind, (on extreme right) accepted the uplifting cheque from the wonderfully dedicated Team from Millstreet Parish. The gentleman with the green jacket at back is Dermot O’Donovan who provided us with a magnificent Tour of the overall Centre. Dermot from the Coachford area is one of a number of excellent Volunteer Helpers at the amazing Centre.

Eily’s Report – 21st May

Dia is Mhuire dióbh go léir a cairde and welcome to my Report.

There may be warnings of terrible thunder and thunder rains, but nothing can beat the early morning warm foggy world with the sun coming through. The dew on the grass and on the branches creating a wonderland of jewels all glistening in the slanting sun. A visiting cat re-enacting the wild desires of the beasts of the forest, crouching down ,even on the wet grass, in the hope of ambushing an unsuspecting little bird. Who was busy himself gathering stuff to make a nest. While other people  have to rush around catching up with their work-packed days, it’s nice for me and my likes, to have the time to follow the day at a speed reduced rate. I’m not sure if the idea of not cutting the lawn in May is such a good idea. It means that a lot of the new growths don’t come, leaving the birds without them. We all know only too well that when we cut the lawn, the first thing up in it’s wake is the dandolion. The favourite food of the small birds. But when they are not cut down the old stem stands withering there, with nothing to replace it. Nothing that is until the growth of mown again welcomes the next plants to spring up and sports its woolly head full of seeds to the sheer joy of our little feathered friends.

Under Amanda’s expert guidance, attendees not only learned the delicate techniques of this age-old craft but also enjoyed a fulfilling and joyous experience.  The workshop was a testament to the community spirit of Bealtaine, bringing people together to celebrate creativity and craftsmanship.

HUGE thanks to everyone that donated to the fundraiser – Ireland’s Fittest Family Superstars

Danny & Gillian O’Riordan & their teammates Brendan & Mark would like to say a HUGE thanks to everyone that donated to their fundraiser – Ireland’s Fittest Family Superstars that took place last weekend in the Meath Eco Park.
The course was gruelling & the heat of the day didn’t help but the Ardfallen team finished in a very respectful 11th place!
They raised the most money from all teams competing & this was mentioned many times throughout the day so again a huge thanks to everyone that donated – it’s all going to an amazing cause – The Irish Hospice Foundation in honour of Danny & Gillian’s aunt Noreen who passed away in July 2022.
Donations are being accepted until June 11th for anyone that would still like to contribute & help get them over the €3,000 mark!

Our Knit & Natter group were thrilled to receive handmade crocheted blankets from Millstreet Community School Transition Year Students along with their teacher Jennifer O’Donoghue. It is inspiring to see different generations coming together, sharing skills, and spreading warmth.  Here’s to more moments of intergenerational joy.
