Death Notice: Kitty O’Sullivan

The death has occurred on Wednesday, February 03, 2010 of Kathleen (Kitty) O’SULLIVAN, (née Daly) of 19 O’Neill Crowley Terrace, Mitchelstown, Cork and formerly of Millstreet.
Reposing at O’Brien’s Funeral Home, Mitchelstown on Saturday evening from 6pm to 8pm, with removal to Mitchelstown Parish Church. Funeral Mass on Sunday at 12 noon. Burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

Going to Haiti to help

A KISKEAM builder and a Millstreet butcher are planning to make a return trip to Haiti in April to help with the relief effort in the earthquake-stricken country.

John F O’Connor from Kiskeam and Jerry O’Leary from Millstreet were in Haiti last October when they took part in the Haven house building project. Both Duhallow men have also been to South Africa on a number of occasions with the Niall Mellon Trust.

The two men, who would have met many times on the playing field, were greatly taken aback when the horror of the earthquake unfolded. They now want to return to Haiti in April to help by providing much needed housing.

They are now working to raise funds for their relief effort and to kick start the fund-raising they will be holding a number of events in the next two months and would greatly appreciate any help from the community.

Saturday, Febrary 6th will see ten of the most original and innovative thinkers in Ireland gather in Ballyvourney, Co. Cork, to give a day of talks on the ground-breaking projects they are working on. The name of the conference is “Imbolc”, and perhaps the most innovative facet of the whole event is that it is taking place entirely through the medium of the Irish language. It is being run on a non-profit basis, and all the speakers and organisers are volunteering their time for the event.

Concern for jobs in Cadbury’s

http://www.blisstree.com/chocolatebytes/files/2008/09/cadbury.jpgThere is concern for the jobs in the chocolate crumb producing plant in Rathmore, as the implications of Kraft’s $13 billion takeover of Cadburys come into focus. It appears that Kraft want to strip away any excess cost, which could see the end of the Cadbury plants in Ireland. There are a number of Millstreet people who work in the factory.

Workers at the Cadbury plant in Rathmore, still do not know if the takeover of the company by US food giant Kraft will affect their jobs.
Last year, SIPTU agreed to rationalisation proposals resulting in the loss of 28 jobs in Rathmore. The plant now has a workforce of around 80.

Cadbury Ireland Ltd employs almost 1,600 people, including 1,100 at its plant in Coolock, Dublin, and the remainder at plants in Tallaght, west Dublin, and Rathmore.

Chocolate crumb, a basic ingredient of Cadbury’s internationally known chocolate bars, is produced in Rathmore and …….. (see the Irish examiner for the full story)

K&L Top Transport Company in Ireland

A MILLSTREET company will represent Ireland at the upcoming 2010 European Transport Company of the year awards in Amsterdam.

The awards are considered the Oscars of the transport and logistics industry with companies from across Europe competing.

K&L Deliveries, which is a Kerry member of TPN (The Pallet Network), has been in operation since 1986 when MD Gordon O’Keeffe and his wife Breda started off their business with two trucks. Now the company operates from a 60,000 square foot warehouse and have more than 35 trucks on the road.

Rare Winter
People recalled the snows of 1982, 1963 and 1947 as we witnessed one of the coldest Winters in decades. Considering the fact that for days major heating and water supply difficulties were experienced by many of us I doubt if anyone will be booking a holiday to either the North or South Pole anytime soon! One uplifting benefit, however, was the capturing of truly rare and superbly picturesque snow pictures over the prolonged period. Vaughan playing for Cork VEC Senior Hurlers

Michael Vaughan from Millstreet Community School was playing for Cork Vocational Schools in the Senior Hurling Championship Quarter-Final last Saturday (Jan 30th 2010) in what proved to be yet another defeat to Kilkenny. In at corner forward he managed a point in a game that was to-ing and fro-ing throughout.

… and Cormac Heffernan were both on the mark in the 45th minute, sweeping to 1-14 to 3-5. Michael Vaughan did reply a minute later but the dynamic had decisively changed. Then, after a melee in their defence …

Fireball in the Sky before 6pm tonight

http://election.ie/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/meteor.pngListening to Matt Cooper on his Last Word radio show on TodayFM this evening, he said that he had just got a text saying that someone had just seen a huge light in the sky over Millstreet moving north east towards Kanturk. He thought it was a hoax at first, but then they started getting loads of texts from all around the country. It looks like it was a large meteorite, hundreds of times bigger than your normal shooting star. Here’s a video of the meteorite on youTube.

Denehy, O’Leary, Dineen & Sullivan

I am a descendant of John Denehy and Hanora O’Leary Denehy who were married in Millstreet 3/1/1870 and emigrated to Clinton County Ohio in 1873. John had a sister Hanora who married Wm. Haley s/o Dennis and Julia (Creedon) from Macroom and emigrated in 1868. Jeremiah a brother of John and Hanora joined them later. John’s father was Jeremiah Denehy married to Johanna Dineen. Hanora O’Leary Denehy’s parents were Patrick O’Leary and Johanna Sullivan O’Leary. If there are any Denehy, O’Leary, Dineen or Sullivan researchers who would like to share information I would love to hear from them.

Rathcoole Rovers B 2 Los Zarcos 1

In another hard fought derby encounter Rathcoole sent their Millstreet visitors home pointless after a late goal in the AUL Murphy’s League 3A on Sunday morning last. This was always going to be a hotly contested affair but it was Los Zarcos who looked to have the upper hand early on. They went into the lead after 10 minutes when Martin Murphy connected with a corner only to see the ball come back off the crossbar, and bounce of at least one defender before ending up in the net.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this the second day of Spring February 2nd Candlemus Day, the day when candles are blessed for use on our alters during the year and donations accepted to cover their cost.

Last week members of our Tidy Towns Association, buried a capsule at the Wild-Life Plot in the Clara Road  and it will not be opened for 50 years. It contains over 40  various items. Some children from our National Schools were present for the ceremony, and when it will be opened again in 2060, they will be able to say that they were there on the day it was put down.

Millstreet Instrumental Music Group, Winners of the Munster Scór na nÓg in Mallow 31-Jan-2010

Congrats to the Millstreet Instrumental Music group (Donal Linehan, Alanna Barry, Kelly Murphy, James Linehan, Cian Dennehy) who won the Munster Scór na nÓg Final in Mallow last night. Unfortunately the Novelty Act from Cullen just came up short on the night. The full results were:

Helen Kiely Retirement

February 1st: St. Bridget’s Day

Today is first day of February, and as always is the feast day of St Bridget one of the few Irish saints.

St Bridget's Cross

We grew up knowing about the St. Bridget’s Cross and the confusion in trying to make it correctly, or to make the biggest and best one. According to tradition a new cross is made each Saint Brigid’s Day (February 1), and the old one is burned to keep fire from the house … but of course customs vary by locality as some people keep them for years.

Another local tradition is that you hang a cloth outside for the night before St Bridget’s day, and rub it to any sores that you get during the year, and it will help to make the pain go away more quickly.

Give it a go at making the cross: If you missed the demonstration last Friday in the Library, just read these instructions on how to make a St Bridgets Cross. You will of course need about a dozen rushes to make one. There’s loads of rushes in the fields this year, and the farmers will only be too be glad to see you taking them (in fact take all of them if you want!). Best of luck.

AN invitation of getting fit or slimming down and at the same time supporting a worthy charity is sure to win appeal amongst the public from next week.

One of North Cork’s most progressive organisations, ‘Cullen and District Special Needs Association’ are gearing up for volunteers across the Duhallow Region and further afield to burn up the calories from its annual weigh-in that commences on Monday, February 1, in Cullen Community Centre at 8pm.
