Fancy Dress Party 2009 – pics (part 1 of 4)
The Annual Fancy Dress Halloween Party in aid of Cystic Fibrosis was an outstanding success. Hundreds arrived at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Friday, 30th Oct. 2009 in totally stunning costumes. The range and variety of these most colourful fancy dress outfits is getting better and better by the year. The very enjoyable auction realised over €3,000.00 alone not to mention the substantial amount collected at admission to the hugely popular event. Áine Collins and Paul Cassidy together with their very dedicated supporters much take a bow on organising such a phenomenally successful event for this year’s chosen cause – Cystic Fibrosis. Catherine Pomeroy-Murphy and Cllr. Noel Buckley conducted the auction wish such professionalism! Here we share a selection of pictures from the truly wonderful night of nights at the Wallis Arms where Billy and Ellen Sheahan of the Wallis Arms appeared in two of the most colourful costumes. What a superb spirit on a special night. Brendan Murphy and I reported “live” for LTV2 Millstreet while Connie and Tom of “The Celt” provided excellent musical harmony.

New York Marathon
Donal Cashman from Tullig is running in the New York Marathon today, starting at 2:20pm Irish time. His race number is 14131 & you will be able to track his location in the race if you go to the NYC Marathon website and follow the instructions for the “athlete tracker”. Or watch the race live online from Universal Sports. Best of luck Donal. ……He finished in 3:18:26 Also well done to Mary O Mahony (#60642) of Minor Row who completed the marathon in 5:43:52.

Daniel Finn (1818-1887) Laborer and Immigrant to USA in 1873 (b. December 1818, Millstreet and Cullen, Cork, County Cork, Munster Province, Ireland – d. October 14, 1887, 276 1st Street, Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey, 07302-2713, USA)
Birth:
Daniel was born in Millstreet, Cork, Ireland to Mary and Patrick Finn (c1790-?).
Marriage:
He married Catherine Creedon (1834-1914) around 1855-1860.
Children:
Together they had the following children: Mary A. Finn (1860-1885) who was born in Ireland or Wales; Nora M. Finn (1866-1898) who was born in Wales and married John Joseph Burke I (1868-1939); and Catherine (Kate) Elizabeth Finn (1873-1918) who was born in Cardiff in Wales. There were two more children that died at birth and they are probably buried in Wales or Ireland.
Emigration:
Around 1860 Daniel and Catherine moved from Ireland to Cardiff, Wales. In 1873 the family moved from Wales to the United States and lived in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Death Notice: Patricia Calhoun (née O’Sullivan), Florida & Millstreet
CALHOUN, Patricia (O’Sullivan), 87, died suddenly on April 2, 2009 in Clearwater. She was born May 19, 1921 in Millstreet County Cork, Ireland. In 1939 she moved to London, England where she was drafted as a telephone operator in the British Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. It was there that she met her husband, James who was serving in the United States 8th Air Force. They were married in Thetford, England on April 11, 1945. As a war bride, she emigrated to the United States aboard the Andrea Doria eventually settling in Ashland, WI. She became a United States citizen on May 4, 1951 and lived in many parts of Wisconsin including Fond du Lac, Eau Claire and Superior. She moved to Clearwater in 1981 and was a member of St. Brendan’s Women’s Guild and the Island Estates Civic Association. She is survived by her husband of 64 year and her four children. Brian (Jeanne) of Jacksonville, Sean of Concord, CA, Garry (Deborah) of New Brighton MN and Colleen (George Harig Jr.), Oakland, CA. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, David Calhoun, Daniel Calhoun, Paige Calhoun, Chloe Harig and one great-grand-child, Phoenix Calhoun. A gathering of friends will take place at Hubbell Funeral Home, Belleair Bluffs on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 1 pm followed by internment at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park. Death Notice: Bridget E. McCoy, Florida
McCOY Bridget E. McCoy (Née O’Sullivan), 85, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2009. She was born on January 12, 1924 in Millstreet, County Cork, Ireland, to James O’Sullivan and Noreen O’Connor. She served in the RAF during WWII as a Nurse where she met and cared for her future husband of 58 years, SGM James S. McCoy. After the War, she accompanied her husband to the US in 1945 where they began their family. She is survived by one son, CW4 James S. McCoy (Linda), and predeceased by one daughter, Sharon Nagy. Bridget has three grand- children, Michelle, Marsha, and Brian, and two great grandchildren, Kennady and Karsyn. The family will receive friends from 12-2:00 P.M. in the Hardage-Giddens Town & Country Chapel on Friday, April 10, 2009. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 10, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Riverside Memorial Park. Horse Show 2010 news
In todays Irish Independent, in a showjumping article, there’s some news on a possible Millstreet Horse Show for next year 2010:
… Meanwhile at home, the Duggan family at Millstreet have caused a stir by announcing details of a major show jumping fixture at the Green Glens Arena immediately following the 2010 Dublin Horse Show.
A disagreement over an insurance claim led to tension between the Millstreet family and Showjumping Ireland (SJI) some time ago and Millstreet Show Director, Thomas Duggan, last night confirmed to The Irish Independent that next year’s event will be “unaffiliated and independent”, which may set them on course for another clash with SJI.

A Night at the Castle – Extra Date
There has been an amazing response. We can hardly believe that ‘A Night at the Castle’, Friday December 4th for Baby Jacob is SOLD OUT!
So to unprecedented demand…. An extra performance has been organized for Sunday December 6th at the earlier time of 4pm.
The organising committee have passed on the flier for the extra concert which you can see on the left (click on it to get a bigger version).

Multicultural Barbecue in Drishane
Sausage & Pudding Winners 2009
Millstreet had two winners at the recent Sausage & Pudding Championships with O’Leary’s Family Butchers in the Square winning a Gold medal in the Traditional Sausage section, and O’Brien’s Craft Butcher from Minor Row winning a Silver Medal also in the Traditional Sausage. They had previously been successful in the regional competitions (Southern Region) which qualified them for the finals. All the medals won are detailed below. The Corkman also had an article on their successes:
Well known Jerry Pat O’Leary recently won a National Award at Craft Butchers Sausage & Pudding competition at the RDS in Dublin.
He demonstrated that the very important attribute of consistency forms part of his reputation for quality, by hitting the top spot at the award ceremony. Having given a strong performance at regional level with three gold medals, Mr O’Leary’s produce was recognised and awarded by the presiding judges.
On The Passing Of Dan Leary
Dan Leary was a legend of old Millstreet but he’ll never more be seen in Millstreet Town
Or in the Town Park on a Summer’s evening With a pair of greyhounds walking up and down
He was a sterling corner back in his prime a stalwart of Millstreet Gaelic Football
Fearless and hard but fair he never shirked a challenge as those who played against him do recall.

For many years he was a Millstreet butcher the Learys of the West End were well known
And Dan the Millstreet schoolboys of the fifties did look up to we were so proud he was one of our own
In Cork County Championship Games in Coachford and in Macroom Dan Leary at his best was often seen
One of his Club’s greatest defensive players it was with pride he wore the Millstreet green.

It was with sadness I read of his passing in the flesh one that we never more will see
But for as long as I have the power to remember he surely will live in my memory
He was so down to earth and unassuming and to his friends he always remained true
‘Tis not because he’s dead I sing his praises in words I only give the man his due.

‘Tis sad to think we never more will see him but good memories of him with us bound to stay
The best forwards in Cork Gaelic Football against him always found it hard to score
It was with pride he wore the green of Millstreet and may he rest in peace forever more.
A note of interest is that Dan was in the 1930s the first child baptised in St Patricks Church following its opening after two years of restoration.

Fondest Greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this wet, windy, but mild calm Tuesday morning.
The Pony Show which is held every year at the Green Glens for charity, was again a great success on Friday Saturday and Sunday last. Entries were away up on former years, and competitions didn’t finish on Sunday night until well after mid-night. Many of the horse-owners expressing their disappointment that there was no Summer Show here this year. But please God we will see a return again in 2010.
Next feature at the Green Glens will be the popular Self Build exhibition which will be on the second weekend of November.
Over ten of our strapping people took part in the Dublin City Marathon over the weekend. Well done to them.
Family Fun at Dromtarriffe
A most enjoyable Family Fun Day with “Crafts & Creatures” was held at Dromtariffe Centre on Bank Holiday Monday, 26th October 2009. A host of marvellous activities took place including a wonderful exhibition of Capoeira by Testa and an opportunity to view rare and beautiful animals. The fascinating event was co-ordinated by Marie & Brendan of “The Animal Road Show” & Friends. Here we share a selection of pictures we took at the end of the excellent event (see below). From Dublin to Kerry
……..After breakfast we started in a hired motor, the driver of which, we were given in confidence to understand, was an Ulster man who had deserted from the British Army, been discharged from the Republican, and was about to offer his services to the Free State — a mihtary record which inspired us with complete confidence in the resourcefulness of his character. Avoiding the main roads, which for several weeks have been completely blocked, we arrived by a circuitous route over a mountain at Millstreet, where our inquiries for the road to Killarney were met with derisive shrieks.
*If you can lepp and you can swim you may perhaps get there; not otherwise,’ we were told. ‘Every bridge is down and every road is blocked since the fighting on Sunday.*
Conscious of proficiency in both ‘lepping’ and swimming, we pushed undaunted on our way, running almost immediately into a flying column of Free State troops, who stopped us and demanded the driver’s permit. They were covered with mud, weary and war worn, having been fighting for two days. ……

Baby Jacob
Spare a thought for baby Jacob Nowak who was born in Millstreet in September with a very rare condition called Anophthalmos which is a congenital absence of one or two eyeballs resulting in severe malformations of the facial skeleton. Early treatment is necessary and there will be fundraising for this to help his family pay for the procedures. At the start of December there will be a concert in the Chapel in Drishane to help little Jakob. There is a superb lineup of performers and those confirmed are : Marina Cassidy – foremost Irish harpist/soprano; Millstreet Church Choir; Music Group “Sceal Eile”; Polish Choir from Cork; Claire O’Leary, fiddle soloist; Louise Bourke, soprano and Niall Moylan, pianist; Siobhan Forde, organist; and the Drishane Gospel Choir. Tickets can be putchased locally. Full concert details are given below :
