Kilcorney and Dromtarriffe News
Kilcorney notes from this weeks Corkman newspaper are available to read, as is a special article on Dromtarriffe Juvenille GAA, which is having its medals presentation this week.
Get off yer Backsides!
While having a few of the black ones the pub last week I got to talking to a young lad of about thirty that was in for a similar hit, and who was giving out about the state of the council, leaning on their shovels, arriving for work late, extended tea breaks, and any other bit of idling they could get up to. Sure, people were talking about the council on the radio all day as well so it was fine to do it.
Now God bless them if those lads can get away with it, and I know that shoveling is a tough job cos God knows I’ve spent enough time doing it myself, but surely they themselves realise that if they don’t pull up their breeches they themselves will be joining the dole queues as have some of their compatriots already due to this damn recession thing that’s apparently going on at the moment.
Crime on the Increase
Garda John Crowley from the Millstreet Station was on Patricia Messenger’s radio show on C103FM this morning, warning of an increase in crime in the general area of west/north west Cork county. Most notable were:
- Distraction crime: where a group of people enter a shop and distract the owner, while one of the group steal something either in the shop or enter the office / store and take money / goods from there. Money, cigarettes and alcohol are their favourite targets. He advised to lock all back rooms when not in use.
- As oil prices rise again, some are reverting to stealing home heating oil from homes and diesel from farms. Sometimes it’s just a jerry can, other times it’s the full delivery. Advise is to lock them and make the job as difficult as possible for anyone thinking of stealing your fuel.
- Finally, outhouses are becoming a target too, so lock away anything worth stealing and be careful that anyone visiting the house / yard doesn’t get a good look around to see what would be worth stealing during the day or in the dead of the night. And if you are suspicious, of someone in the yard, write down the car/van registration for later use, so that your “visitors” can be tracked down at a later date.
So be careful and keep your things safely locked away.

Baby Jacob has his First Operation
Little baby Jacob has gone through the first operation for his condition anophthalmos and his mother Wiola has written about it on his website:
A few days ago Jacob had his first operation in Germany. It was an emotional experience for us. We were very worried when they were taking him into the operating theatre. I was thinking: he is still so little, how will he take a general anaesthetic?
During the operation, Jacob got his first expanders, which from now on will be stimulating orbital growth. Thanks to a few operations like this one Jacob will be able to receive his ocular prostheses.
When after the operation we were called into the recovery room, I found myself looking at the huge IV catheter inserted into his tiny hand. I was wondering why it is so in this world that children are born sick and …

In Millstreet Only One Cormac Dineen
He was a man we used to celebrate
A Millstreet and a Cork footballing great
A fearless fellow in his younger years
His passing would have been a source for tears.
.
Born on the Cork and Kerry border near Rathmore
The green of Millstreet and the red Of Cork he wore
And memories of him remain evergreen
In Millstreet only one Cormac Dineen.
.
As a person for his integrity respect to him was shown
A Millstreet vet one admired and well known
One in the flesh we never more will see
He will be missed by friends and family.

Wedding Journal Show 2010
The Wedding Journal Show is back in the Green Glens in the New Year on the 23rd and 24th of January in the Green Glens Arena. Last year was a very successful event, as is described on their website
It may have been icy outside but the Wedding Journal team’s hearts were warmed by the impressive turnout to the Cork Show. Arriving at Millstreet on January 24th, the two-day show was our biggest Cork event to date, with even more exhibitors and visitors than ever before.
Those in search of a New Year bargain weren’t disappointed either, as exhibitors, from photographers, to florists, make-up artists and bridal stores, offered exclusive rates and opportunities to enter competitions throughout weekend event.

Millstreet Development Group – What are they About?
In an economic downturn it is especially important to promote business, industry and shopping in any town or area. Millstreet Development Group has been established with this in mind. Millstreet has always been a traditional market town offering a wide range of goods and services. This is still very much the case. The Group has been established by a number of businesses from the Millstreet area to promote the town.
With Christmas fast approaching, the group has taken out double page advertising features in local papers to remind people just what the town has to offer. It has also set up a scheme which will allow people to buy gift vouchers at the Credit Union that can then be redeemed in any one of over twenty five shops and businesses. They have organised a number of exciting initiatives for Christmas Week which include Carol Singing, Christmas music and lights, and a Marquee in the Square to sell a range of food and crafts. All this is designed to help keep money in the town.
Once Christmas is out of the way, the group hopes to focus on a number of broader issues affecting the town. A major issue at present is the lack of an industrial zone in the area to allow new light industrial businesses to open or allow existing businesses to expand. Also, the group feels that tourism should be promoted and encouraged. The area is one of outstanding natural beauty with a great facility in The Millstreet Country Park. Any increase in tourism would surely benefit everyone in the town.
Millstreet Development Group has plenty of work to do, but with the enthusiasm and hard work of its members and support from the wider community it should prove to be a big benefit for the town.
Millstreet Development Group meet every Tuesday night in the Wallis Arms at 9pm, and all are welcome to come, listen and contribute. The above message was submitted by the MDG Secretary.

No Buyers for Affordable Housing
Cork County Council hopes to dispose of 42 houses, deemed affordable, in towns and villages in North Cork, as it has been unable to find buyers for them…
The houses are in Bweeng (10), Castlelyons (2), Charleville (2), Glanworth (6), Kanturk (6), Kilworth (1), Mallow (1), Millstreet (3) and Rathcormac (11)…
A senior executive officer with the council, said the local authority couldn’t continue to carry the costs associated with the empty houses. He told councillors the council had decided to sell off the houses in areas deemed to be in less demand for affordable housing…
Last year the Council dropped the prices of affordable housing when they realised that the market price was then below the price of their affordable housing. But still they have failed to sell them. Now they want to sell them at any cost, just to get the expense off their balance sheets.
The full article is available to read on the Irish Examiner website. Also, you can read Cork County Councils brochure for Affordable Housing in Millstreet, or read the Affordable Housing Explanatory Leaflet for Cork County Council (Northern Division)
