Caitlin outperformed a field of 36 pipers from Ireland and Scotland. Caitlin, who also won the All Ireland Under 14 now adds the much coveted All Ireland Junior Cup to her list of prizes. She will now move into a higher grade and will compete in at Intermediate level. This is the second Houlihan name to go on the cup with her sister Margaret having won it in 1999.
BTEI are running a short FETAC Level 5 Social Studies course in Mallow in early November to service the increased demand for part-time education. With a huge increase in unemployment, the need for certified up-skilling in a changing workplace is more apparent.
This introductory course offers FETAC Level 5 Social Studies one night per week (7-10pm) over 10 weeks, which aims to give participants an understanding of the core theories and methodologies of Sociology and prepare them for further study at Post Leaving Certificate Colleges in this area. It is hoped that a second FETAC Level 5 module (Human Growth and Development) will be offered in the New year.
AFTER a wet 2009, cows but no rain are on offer next Saturday 17th October at the National Dairy Show. The event is completely under cover in the Green Glens Arena at Millstreet, and offers an enjoyable day out for all the family, whatever the weather.
Along with top quality Holstein Friesian and Jersey cattle bidding for the Irish Examiner supreme championship, there are trade stands, the Irish Examiner Farming Forum, and an elite sale of cattle organised by Taaffe Auctions.
Plenty there to keep dairy farmers occupied, and organisers have made a special effort to make it a family event, with flower arranging and cookery demonstrations, and a children’s’ section with bouncy castles, face painting and a pets corner….

A “Spooktacular” Halloween Fancy Dress will be held on Friday 30th October at The Wallis Arms Hotel in Millstreet, with all proceeds raised going to the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland (CFAI).
Organised by Aubane Social Club and The Wallis Arms, this annual charity event promises to be a fun filled night with music by The Celts at 9pm followed by Mad Dave DJ, a delicious barbecue with O’Leary Family Butchers, a super raffle and of course prizes for the “Best Costumes”.
Guests will be able to bid of fantastic items such as signed Munster and Ireland Rugby Jerseys, a Laptop worth €2,000, two weeks in an apartment in Portugal, Spa Treatments at The Brehon and much more in the Charity Auction, with proceeds going directly towards Cystic Fibrosis (CF) facilities in Cork University Hospital.

Millstreet overcame Tullylease in the Duhallow Junior B Football Championship by 1-16 to 1-5, while the Junior Footballers were well beaten by Newmarket Intermediates the Duhallow Cup by 4-20 to 2-2.

Millstreet GAA are in the midst of supporting the Cork County Board promoted Clubs Fund Raising Draw with another new series underway. The draw acts as a fillip boost to the development of club facilities across the county in addition to enhancing the quality of Gaelic Games for youth at club and school level. The draws take place on a monthly basis and feature an array of attractive cash and other prizes. The club welcome new participants — a year’s subscription is €100 paid yearly or monthly. It’s good to know that a large amount of the money stays local, as well as having a large prize find of €575,000.
Millstreet were at the receiving end of a defeat by Brian Dillons in the semi final to County U16 Camogie Championship hosted in Ballinlough last Saturday week. For most of the contest, Millstreet provided skillful and spirited resistance yet they came up short to match their opponents guile and flair. In fairness, Millstreet didn’t relent too easily from a side that fielded as Emer Twomey, Jessica Dunne, Laura Dennehy, Aine Herlihy, Orla Kiely, Anna Jean O’Reilly, Kelly Murphy, Allanna Barry, Muireann Murphy, Leanne Kelleher, Kayleigh Sheahan, Aideen Buckley, Leanne Murphy, Kate O’Keeffe, Lydia O’Reilly. LEGAL notices are to be served on some residents at West End in Millstreet who have not paid a connection fee to a new sewerage system which was put in place by Cork County Council at a cost of €25,000.
While the council has had the new system installed, and has had connections brought up to the houses, residents must privately pay for a plumber to connect them to the new system, says the council.
The old sewerage system, which is at the back of the row of houses at West End, is over 100 years old.
At Kanturk Area Meeting on Monday, Cllr Noel Buckley (FG) said that “bad odour” has been emitting from the old sewerage system for the past two weeks. He described it as a “major problem at West End”.

I was very surprised when I first found this document in the internet and thought it might be of interest to some viewers of our website. Many of the names (people and places) are spelled as they were pronounced at the time, being greatly influenced by the Irish language. Also some confusion with the letters P and D!

Tithes were taxes of 10% of income, mostly from tenant farmers but also from tradesmen, which were to be paid to support the Protestant Church ministers. This was the case because the Protestant Anglican Church was the established state church and continued to be so till it was disestablished in 1869. As the vast majority of the population were Catholics they hated having to pay this and regarded it as an unjust tax and they also gave something towards the support of their own local Catholic priest. Even Protestants disliked paying as it was an excessive burden on all at this stage.

The Millstreet Parish Church Restoration Appeal are seeking a positive show of support from those at home and abroad towards their ‘Buy-A-Brick’ campaign.
Through the project, it’s hoped to raise a substantial amount towards the church renovation fund. St Patrick’s Church is regarded as one of the finest buildings within the Diocese of Kerry. No major maintenance work has been undertaken since the 1930’s and as a result, time and elements have taken their inevitable toll on the fabric of the building.
The church project commenced in April 2008, the work focusing on the exterior and concentrating on long needed repairs. Amongst the detailed project, the church was completely re-slated and all flashings replaced. All walls were re-plastered and the stone work re-pointed while stained glasses required full restoration and protective storm glazing.

Hard luck to the Millstreet U16 hurlers, who were defeated in the Duhallow U16 League Final where they were defeated by South Kerry 5-14 to 2-13, after extra time.

At the end of the first quarter, South Kerry was leading by two points thanks to some accurate shooting by Dave O’Connor and Kevin Sullivan. The teams then exchanged points and it remained level until Millstreet got a goal just before half-time, who then went ahead by 3 at half time 1-5 to 5 points.
In the second half the intensity remained but was trailing by 3 points in the last quarter until Anthony Keogh finally found the Millstreet net with five minutes remaining. Both teams exchanged further points and finished level which forced the game into extra time. At the end of normal time it finished 1-10 apiece.
