The Boeing New Year’s Day Swimmers

‘Tis something that one should not do in a whim
To participate in the Boeing New Year’s Day swim
In dark icy waters swollen by rain and sleet
In the river Blackwater near the Town of Millstreet.
.
In the depths of Winter in zero degrees
With frost on the ground in the cold gusty breeze
Just thinking about it does make me feel cold
But then again time has left me feeling old.
.
There must be great inner warmth in the Duhallow grog
For the Blackwater in Winter would freeze a hairy dog
Those who took part in the swim medals for bravery are due
To their Glacial Gods they would have to be true.
.
It was for a good cause that much I do know
But in weather that’s even too cold for to snow
Without a single leaf on any deciduous tree
To swim in the Blackwater seems beyond brave to me.
.
Of the coldness of the Blackwater in Winter I do have an idea
And after such a swim one would need something stronger than tea
‘Tis not for the faint-hearted is all I can say
And for the Boeing New Year’s Day swimmers lets hear the hooray.

The Cold Snap

DSCF1317-600 icicles
Serious icicles ... in Millstreet. When did that last happen?

It’s been years since we’ve had cold weather like we are having at the moment. -7C (19F) the night before last and presumably colder last night. No wonder icicles like in the picture are popping up.

Thankfully there hasn’t been any snow or rain on the frozen ground, so roads and footpaths are not too bad yet (though you still need to be careful), but that could all change with one good shower.

Last nights Forecast. Help!
Forecast for the night of 01-01-'10. -9C Help!

Be careful out there, and don’t become one of those countless people who have slipped and broken bones or torn muscles / ligaments etc. So don’t make any unnecessary journeys, just stay inside with a nice fire and enjoy the company of your family while you can.

Don’t forget to look out for your elderly neighbours that might be living alone, because they can be susceptible to real cold like this.

New Year’s Day swim in the Blackwater river

A festive atmosphere prevailed at the Boeing, for the second annual New Year’s day swim. An air temperature of minus one (no one tested the water’s temperature) did not stop the twelve participants. Well done to all! The mulled wine and refreshments were very welcome after the icy dip. The supporters needed warming up as well, just the thought made them freeze!

The organisers would like to thank Supervalue for sponsoring the event and everyone who donated generously to this year’s causes – LTV2 and The Irish Cancer Society Night Nurses.

Millstreet 2000 – 2010

The Corkman newspaper this week has run a summary of the headlines of the Millstreet Matters column for the years 2000 – 2001. What happended ten years ago doesn’t feel that long ago at all. It is in two parts, and can be read on their website:

2000-2004 – Reeling in the years

2005-2009 – Celtic tiger changes the face of Millstreet

Happy New Year

From all at Millstreet.ie, all of us really want to wish everyone who contributed to the site or visited us from at home in Millstreet or from anywhere in the world in the last year a very happy and enjoyable year ahead in 2010.

Another fresh new year is here . . .
Another year to live!
To banish worry, doubt, and fear,
To love and laugh and give!

This bright new year is given me
To live each day with zest . . .
To daily grow and try to be
My highest and my best!

I have the opportunity
Once more to right some wrongs,
To pray for peace, to plant a tree,
And sing more joyful songs!”

One of my new years resolutions is that we rise out of our winter hibernation and move millstreet.ie forward for the coming year, as it has done in the last few months.

Happy New Year to Everyone

from Rev Laurence Graham of the Methodist Church:

Happy New Year to everyone.

A tradition which goes back over 250 years to the early days of the Methodist movement is that, near the beginning of each year we share in a Covenant Service.  A Covenant is an agreement or set of promises which two people exchange implying a commitment to each other.  The Covenant service gives us an opportunity to renew our Covenant with God.  Of course our Covenant with God begins with him in that he has made the first move.  He came to earth as Jesus Christ and gave his life on the cross to take the consequences and brokenness caused by our sinfulness.  He then rose again and invites each of us into a personal relationship with him.  So we are called to respond by giving our lives to him, trusting him as our personal Lord and Saviour.  As the apostle John puts it “…we love because he first loved us.” (1John 4:19)

This will be the theme of our next meeting in Millstreet which takes place on Sunday 10th January at 7.00 p. m.  During this meeting we will share together in the special Covenant prayer.  The meeting takes place as usual at the Canon O’Donovan Centre on Clara Road in Millstreet.  For further information contact Rev. Laurence Graham at 064 6631613 or <email>

Coursing in Millstreet

THE popular two day Millstreet coursing meeting is taking place this week on Wednesday and Thursday. Weather permitting, a large attendance is expected for the annual event in Millstreet Town Park, with the daily proceedings underway at 11.30am. The main event is the North Cork Cup featuring some of the best dogs nationwide while there is sure to be keen competition for the Oaks and Derby Trial Stakes. Also down for decision is the inter club Game Protection Cup and confined Tanyard Stakes. An attraction for patrons is a special daily draw on the admission card with a chance of winning € 250 per day thanks to the sponsorship of the North Cork Tuition Centre, Newmarket.

Mushera Christmas Day Climb 2009

About 40 brave souls that ventured to the top of Mushera Mountain for the annual Christmas Day Climb in aid of the Baby Jacob Trust Fund (click to see the full picture).

Despite the roads being treacherous because of rain freezing when it hit the ground, there was a good crowd who were all in good spirits. The ground was hard and icy, but the heather was good for getting grip. Thankfully it stopped raining for most of the walk, except for the last few minutes on the way down, and the wind was not as strong as it has been in the past, but the mountain was shrouded in cloud while we were up there. At the top, and on behalf of the Baby Jacob Trust Fund Jerry Pat O’Leary thanked everyone for their efforts in the difficult weather.

Wishing everyone a very happy and a peaceful Christmas.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this very seasonal Tuesday morning with treatcherous and snow all around.

Well it won’t be long now. Just a few more days and by all accounts its going to be a white one. I’ll be killed for saying it, but I love snow. And a white Christmas would be such a bonus.

No matter what the weather, the shopping goes on with perhaps some people forced to shop at home because of the weather. The Marquee will be in the Square till Christmas Eve and vouchers at the Credit Union will solve your gift problem at any price, And by what I hear, they are proving very very popular. Some worth €20 each, were offered as prizes on LTV2s program last week and the lucky winners were, Breda O Leary, West End, Sean and Delia Kelleher, Macroom, Kathleen McAulliffe, Millstreet, and John F. Tarrant Rathcoole.Congrats all round.

Christmas season begins as lights are switched on

from the Corkman 10-Dec-2009:

MILLSTREET TOWN FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS: The festive season is officially underway in Millstreet after the town switched on its Christmas lights last Friday evening.

Despite inclement weather and driving rain, excited children and parents turned up in the Town Square for the big switch on.

The event was hosted by the Millstreet Development Group who helped whip up just the right jolly atmosphere for the occasion and kept the crowd entertained.

Live performances came from Millstreet Comhalthas Ceolteoirí Eireann and there was a warm welcome for a horse drawn carriage with occupants Bertie Buckley and Anna Balla in periodic costume, filling the bill of lord and lady of the manor splendidly.

IN APPRECIATION

The O’Connell family of Lisaniska, Cullen, on behalf of our son and brother Diarmuid wish to express our sincere thanks and deep appreciation to our neighbours, friends, relations, team members, club officers and the wider community for the overwhelming support shown to us during the difficult days after Diarmuid’s life threatening event in Castlemagner on February 21st 2009.

A very special “Thank You” to the three boys, Gerard O’Leary, D.J. Collins and Andrew O’Sullivan for their act of courage, bravery and composure on giving Diarmuid back the gift of life on the field. We thank all the people present who had to endure our pain and who assisted in every way; to the Castlemagner Club for being equipped to deal with such an emergency and to their club officers for visiting Diarmuid in hospital. Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 992 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this very cold but seasonal,Tuesday morning.

A very interesting meeting of the Community Council was held at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Tuesday night. Topics for discussion included the upgrading of our Youth Centre and the fitting of Astro-Turf surface on our tennis courts. It was also decided to host a community Council Awards Social this year at a date yet to be decided. Eileen Murphy reported on our Youth Club, and said that there are 64 members now with parents coming to help on Friday nights when they meet from 8 to 10  Theres room for more, but more parents must come on board with the increase in numbers.

The after school service will resume after Christmas. The Defibulators have now been placed at the Youth Centre and at the Garda Station. The full list of trained personnel will be announced in the near future. Joseph Lawlor was co-opted on the Council, on that night.and before the meeting ended a special Presentation was made to Fr. Gerard O Leary on behalf of our Community.
