A cookery demonstration entitled “Tastes of Christmas” will be held at our Community School tomorrow, Wednesday night. December2nd, with Master Chef Frank Moynihan doing the cooking. Admission €10. Proceeds to Baby Jacob.The Irish Heart Foundation and Cystic Fibrosis. Starts at 8, all welcome.

Cairde Muintir Mhuire will host “Prayer Through Song” with the renowned Gospel singer David Parkes at St. Colemans Church in Macroom, to-night December1st.  Starts at 8, Doors opened at 7.15, admission €10. Proceeds to the Cairde Muintir Mhuire Fund.

“We are now printing our own money in Millstreet”

… or so says the Millstreet Development Group, whose excellent idea on how to keep money in the local vicinity is  getting more and more time on the airways and papers. There’s loads of favourable points as to why we should get the vouchers such as:

Any local employer can give workers up to €250 worth of vouchers € tax-free, which can be spent in participating shops in the town. These vouchers can be given in lieu of wages or bonus payments Normally at this time of year, companies might give a ‘one-for-all’ voucher or vouchers for a particular store. The problem here is that in most cases the money leaves the town and in some instances commission is charged on vouchers. There will be no commission charged on the Millstreet vouchers, meaning that the recipients get their full value …  and offer a variety of extra deals, discounts and packages.

Multi-Cultural Christmas Community Party

multicultural-600IRD Duhallow is holding a Multi-Cultural Christmas Community Party in Millstreet Community Hall on December 9th, from 6pm – 8:30pm

This event will give local children & adults the opportunity to meet new friends, have some festive refreshments and sing Christmas carols. Santa and Mrs Claus will be in attendance. Death Notice: Con Cunningham

The death has occurred of Con CUNNINGHAM of Clonbanin, Cork.
Peacefully, at Resthaven Nursing Home, Meelin. Reposing at Casey’s Funeral Home, Kiskeam. Removal tomorrow, Monday evening, at 8pm to the Church of the Presentation of Our Lady, Derrinagree. Requiem Mass on Tuesday at 12 noon. Burial afterwards in St Mary’s Cemetery, Millstreet.

“Sounds of Advent” Tonight

The “Sounds of Advent” concert is on this evening in St.Patricks Church at 7:30pm. The sound in the church this morning was really good with the new sound system installed and adjusted. With two choirs  singing (our own Millstreet Choir and the Kerry Choir), it promises to be a very entertaining evening, especially if you had nothing already planned for the evening. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door. All proceeds to the Church Restoration Fund.

GAA: On the pitch round up

The bad weather has held up completion of the GAA schedul in Duhallow. These are the competitions that Millstreet are still involved in:

  • U21 Hurling Championship: Kilbrin and Kanturk must play in order to face Millstreet in the semi-final. (Update 30th Nov: Kilbrin 0-15 Millstreet 2-4)
  • The JBHC is down to the semi-finals, Dromtariffe take on Millstreet while Banteer encounter Kanturk.
  • There are three teams involved in the Junior B Football League, Lyre bettered Meelin in a semi final replay to secure a passage to the decider against Millstreet
  • Also, the MAHL final is awaited between Croke Rovers and Millstreet

Millstreet were defeated by Freemount in the Junior B Football championship last Monday Night by 3-8 to 1-6

Marina Cassidy on the Drishane Concerts

Killarney soprano and harpist Marina Cassidy has also joined dozens of musicians and singers who will perform at a sell-out benefit concert at Drishane Castle in Millstreet on December 6th for the Baby Jacob Trust.

The Killarney woman became aware of baby Jacob six weeks ago when she sang at the opening of the restored chapel at Drishane Chapel on the invitation of the Duggan family.

“That night, the Duggans were talking about the fund-raising for Baby Jacob and they asked me to be involved in the concert and I’m delighted to be,” Marina said. “There was just an incredible atmosphere in the church that night.

“When I heard about the little baby, I felt I really wanted to be part of it.”…

The Big Concert this week will be in our parish Church on Sunday November 29th in aid of the Church restoration Fund.entitled “Sounds of Advent.” Our own Parish choir will open the two hour show, and they will be followed by the  Kerry Choral Society.

Get off yer Backsides!

While having a few of the black ones the pub last week I got to talking to a young lad of about thirty that was in for a similar hit, and who was giving out about the state of the council, leaning on their shovels, arriving for work late, extended tea breaks, and any other bit of idling they could get up to. Sure, people were talking about the council on the radio all day as well so it was fine to do it.

Now God bless them if those lads can get away with it, and I know that shoveling is a tough job cos God knows  I’ve spent enough time doing it myself, but surely they themselves realise that if they don’t pull up their breeches they themselves will be joining the dole queues as have some of their compatriots already due to this damn recession thing that’s apparently going on at the moment.

Crime on the Increase

Garda John Crowley from the Millstreet Station was on Patricia Messenger’s radio show on C103FM this morning, warning of an increase in crime in the general area of west/north west Cork county. Most notable were:

  • Distraction crime: where a group of people enter a shop and distract the owner, while one of the group steal something either in the shop or enter the office / store and take money / goods from there. Money, cigarettes and alcohol are their favourite targets. He advised to lock all back rooms when not in use.
  • As oil prices rise again, some are reverting to stealing home heating oil from homes and diesel from farms. Sometimes it’s just a jerry can, other times it’s the full delivery. Advise is to lock them and make the job as difficult as possible for anyone thinking of stealing your fuel.
  • Finally, outhouses are becoming a target too, so lock away anything worth stealing and be careful that anyone visiting the house / yard doesn’t get a good look around to see what would be worth stealing during the day or in the dead of the night. And if you are suspicious, of someone in the yard, write down the car/van registration for later use, so that your “visitors” can be tracked down at a later date.

So be careful and keep your things safely locked away.

Millstreet Christmas Market

17th – 24th December from 12 – 5pm daily

(except on 24th when marquee may close

earlier).

Santa will be visiting The Youth Centre on the 19th and 20th from 12 – 4pm. parents will be encouraged to visit the marquee.

The Big Concert this week will be in our parish Church on Sunday November 29th in aid of the Church restoration Fund.entitled “Sounds of Advent.” Our own Parish choir will open the two hour show, and they will be followed by the  Kerry Choral Society.

Tickets @ €20 each can be bought over a wide area or from the parish office ,or at the door on the night. Please support it well. Starts at 7.30 ,bring a cushion as the Church seats are hard.

Baby Jacob has his First Operation

Little baby Jacob has gone through the first operation for his condition anophthalmos and his mother Wiola has written about it on his website:

A few days ago Jacob had his first operation in Germany. It was an emotional experience for us. We were very worried when they were taking him into the operating theatre. I was thinking: he is still so little, how will he take a general anaesthetic?
During the operation, Jacob got his first expanders, which from now on will be stimulating orbital growth. Thanks to a few operations like this one Jacob will be able to receive his ocular prostheses.
When after the operation we were called into the recovery room, I found myself looking at the huge IV catheter inserted into his tiny hand. I was wondering why it is so in this world that children are born sick and …

He was a man we used to celebrate
A Millstreet and a Cork footballing great
A fearless fellow in his younger years
His passing would have been a source for tears.

And memories of him remain evergreen
In Millstreet only one Cormac Dineen.

As a person for his integrity respect to him was shown

Youghal defeat Millstreet U16s in County Championship

YOUGHAL withstood a determined finish from Millstreet in a keenly contested County U-16 ‘B’ Football Championship semi final played at a rainlashed Mourneabbey last Monday.Weather conditions were anything but suitable for the game and great credit must go to both set of players for serving up a high standard of play given the wretched rain that prevailed in the opening half. At the end of the hour, there could be no argument about the outcome, Youghal were far, the hungrier side, their application superb and in general, the East Cork boys emerged much more enterprising in the prevailing conditions.

Wedding Journal Show 2010

weddingjournalThe Wedding Journal Show is back in the Green Glens in the New Year on the 23rd and 24th of January in the Green Glens Arena. Last year was a very successful event, as is described on their website

It may have been icy outside but the Wedding Journal team’s hearts were warmed by the impressive turnout to the Cork Show. Arriving at Millstreet on January 24th, the two-day show was our biggest Cork event to date, with even more exhibitors and visitors than ever before.

Those in search of a New Year bargain weren’t disappointed either, as exhibitors, from photographers, to florists, make-up artists and bridal stores, offered exclusive rates and opportunities to enter competitions throughout weekend event.
