Eubank on sharp end of Collins
In yesterdays Irish Times, there was an article about the Eubank v Collins boxing match in 1994. For anyone that was there, it was probably the best night in the Green Glens in the last 20 years.
TOM HUMPHRIES watched as Chris Eubank arrived on a Harley Davidson but left Millstreet on a tumbril
CLAP CLAP Clap clap clap. Clap clap clap clap. STEVO!
The corrugated roofing of the byre in Millstreet echoed with the rolling thunder which hailed the new super middleweight champion of the world. Mr Steve Collins from Annamoe Terrace in Cabra. All hail.
Millstreet on Saturday night. Seldom can the exotic Chris Eubank from Brighton in England have tasted a stranger or more alien environment.
Travelling with his customary blaze of pomp and circumstance to a small, rural Irish town which reeked of burgers and frying onions; through the homely mess of buildings that is the Millstreet complex, past the rows of thoroughbred horses blinking inscrutably over their half doors, and into the arena where an 8,000 crowd, frenzied with excitement is passing a demented Mexican wave around the place.

Plastic Kerrymen
When the Cork teams are playing
your heart would fill with pride
what a shame to be a plastic
and support the other side
.
From dear old Ballydaly
back to the county bounds
a strange little creature
in some places can be found
.
So, if you can’t support your own county
we don’t need you anymore
go ahead and pack your bags
and buzz off to Rathmore
.
They’ll send you to Killorglin
a lovely town of note
you’ll be very welcome
they always need a GOAT!
by Jerry Lehane
Transcript recited by Chloe Collins on RTE last Saturday night. Of course there’s lots of them Plastics appearing out since the match last Sunday. “C” reg cars with their kerry flags out the window. To be avoided 😉

Regional Report 980
by Eily Buckley
Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 980 from Millstreet.
Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this nice calm and bright Tuesday morning.
Oh dear, should I be depressed, disillusioned, have a feeling of hopelessness, another defeat, to Kerry. But after having a little moan, one can only admire them because we all know that they will rise up and get ready for the fray again next year.
In the meantime lets look at the girls. Two weeks ago, their Cork Camogie team won the All Ireland, in Croke Park, and their football team are putting the final preparations for a similar level next Sunday.
Sam in Rathmore
LTV2 Millstreet, in the interest of objectivity, balance and neighbourliness travelled to Rathmore Railway Station on Monday, 21st September 2009 to record the warm welcome accorded to the Kerry team as they brought back the famous Sam Maguire Cup.  Our pictures illustrate a wealth of colour as well as scenes of heartfelt happiness and energetic enthusiasm.   There was a great media presence including Paschal Sheehy broadcasting live for RTÉ 1 television.  Mike Sheehan, Sheila and I covered local television recording (which Seán Murphy had done so well on previous occasions).  Great credit is due to Rathmore GAA and Irish Rail for organising the historic event so superbly and so very safely.   The many decorations (especially the front garden of a residence in Rathduane) illustrating the Kingdom colours truly enhanced the festive atmosphere.
Well, hopefully in 2010 we shall be travelling to Mallow or Cork extending a similar sincere welcome to the Sam Maguire Cup! (Seán Radley for LTV2 Millstreet and for www.millstreet.ie) … loads of more photos below:
284 Points for Tidy Towns in 2009
THE enthusiastic Millstreet Tidy Town Association delved into an analysis of its 2009 submission that earned a rewarding nine mark increase in the national competition. Jumping from 275 to 284 points it follows a 53 mark increase over the previous six years.
The positive reaction from the Tidy Towns adjudicator together with a number of exciting developments in the pipeline augurs well for the future. Some eighty five towns and villages entered the tidy towns within County Cork, Millstreet maintaining its high ranking position.
The positive feedback from the Adjudicator gives a dedicated Millstreet Tidy Towns Association the impetus to continue with a series of projects to enhance the town’s image…
The article can be read in the Millstreet Matters column on the Corkman newspaper this week which also contains other news from Millstreet
The Full Adjudicators Report can be read below
On the Passing of Dee Dineen
The news has spread far beyond Duhallow’s borders that Dee Dineen has passed away
In St Mary’s cemetery in Millstreet Town his last remains now lay
He was a marvellous character likeable in every way
But the journey through life for us all must end one night or day.
.
Characters like Dee Dineen was are glorified in song and rhyme
He wore the Ballydaly colours when he was in his prime
He was far from an old man in his late fifties or early sixties maybe
And sad to think that in the flesh him we never more will see.
.
In Duhallow he enjoyed the status of a character of renown
He will be missed in Ballydaly, in Cullen and Millstreet Town
And all through Duhallow and Sliabh Luachra where he was known quite well
A biography of his life in book form thousands of copies would sell.
.
He will be missed by his many friends as well as by his family
And sad to think that in the flesh him we never more will see
So likeable and kind hearted fond memories of him will remain
The likes of him in Ballydaly may not be seen again.

Emotions Run High ahead of Showdown
In today’s Sunday Independant, there is a brief mention of the rivalry along the Cork-Kerry Border in Millstreet and Ballydesmond:
Border communities have revelled in the build-up — with Ballydesmond and Millstreet a sea of red and white — while, just across the county bounds, Rathmore and Lauragh are bedecked in the Kingdom’s green, white and gold.
Such is the rivalry — and close connections — between the two counties, that even schools are split straight down the middle with their loyalties.
In Millstreet, the rivalry has been given a little ‘divine’ twist by the fact that while the town is proudly located in Cork — in all spiritual matters it belongs to the diocese of Kerry.
Parish priest Canon Declan O’Connor admitted the divided loyalties have added a good-humoured edge to today’s showdown — but, unlike many of his parishioners, he will be cheering on Kerry.
Ballydaly native Jerry Lehane, even used the fevered border rivalry to pen a classic poem dubbed ‘The Plastic Kerryman’ — the moral of which is that if you’re on the Rebel side of the border you’d better cheer on Cork or relocate back to the Kingdom.
Boggeragh Wind Farm Development
Following a lot of work on the ground which saw miles of roads being built and ground works being put in place the first of the wind turbines have now arrived on the site of the new Boggeragh Mountain wind farm development.
Over the coming weeks these wind turbines will be erected on their bases with the help of one of the largest cranes in use in Ireland at the moment.
The 57mw project when complete will be Ireland’s largest stand alone wind farm. The project at a cost in excess of €100 million will be able to generate enough power to supply the electricity needs of 30,000 Irish householders annually.

Video: Kerry Football Animals
Seeing as we here in the Millstreet Parish border the Kingdom, we are hearing that some of our farmers are having the same troubles as their compatriots further south on the Cork – Kerry border:
West Cork farmers are doing their best to look after disillusioned Kerry supporters as many of them turn up in their fields.
All in the spirit of the upcoming All-Ireland Final (Sunday 20th September 2009) between Cork and Kerry. The video is of course a reference to Paidà O’Shea’s infamous comment about the Kerry supporters being “animals”
Come on the REBELS!

Into God’s Eye at Musheramore
Our condolences go to the family of Paddy Mulcahy from Cork who died while out walking on Musheramore just above the Millstreet Country Park last Sunday September 13th during the recent fine spell. His son Thomás has written about this on his blog.
Paddy died suddenly on a lovely sunny September day in a beautiful spot called Musheramore, a small hill in northeast Cork, near Millstreet, while out hillwalking with his wife and friends.
Drake and Moynihan WRC Australia Results
We had reported on the WRC Australia where Charlie Drake and Eoin Moynihan were competing two weeks ago. Finally confirmation of the results from the Corkman
FRUSTRATION turned to elation for North Cork rally pair Charlie Drake and Eoin Moynihan on winning the PRC National Class in Australian leg of the World Rally championship in New South Wales.
Derinagree native Drake described their 15th overall position and class win as one of the proudest moments of his life.
“To stand on the podium of a world rally championship round and be presented with a trophy and watch the tri-colour flying in front of me was brillant”
The pair ran into problems with scrutiny, excluded from both group N and official results because of not having a rear wiper which was very frustrating

No Money for Pedestrian Crossing
The Corkman notes this week that at the recent County Council Meeting, councillors, at the behest of their constituents, were requesting pedestrian crossings in Millstreet and Boherbue, for greater public safety. However, senior county official Mr Weir, along with Newmarket based engineer Mort Ahern, explained that a pedestrian crossing costs €10,000 — which the council did not have to give.
With county council income having taken a nosedive this year, senior official Aidan Weir admitted that even paying their own — reduced — staff was proving a challenge.

Rent Reduction sought for Museum and Pipe Band
Councilor Noel Buckley last week was asking county council officials to reduce the rents for our Museum and our Pipe Band who both have rooms in the Carnegie Hall. Apparently the rent for these rooms is €6,500 each per year which seems like an exorbitant amount for local groups that have given so much to the community for such a long time.
It would be a great relief to both organisations to have that burden off their backs. The move was thankfully supported by other councilors from the Kanturk region. But why this was not sought in the last few years when it would more than likely have been granted remains a mystery. update 9 Oct: Found out that the increase was only upped from a nominal fee once they had been moved out of the Carnegie Hall for the year because of refurbishments.
