News from the Millstreet area from the Corkman this week deals with the Cullen weigh in which starts in Cullen tonight (Feb 1st), Scór na nÓg, an upcoming book launch and sporting matters.

AN invitation of getting fit or slimming down and at the same time supporting a worthy charity is sure to win appeal amongst the public from next week.

One of North Cork’s most progressive organisations, ‘Cullen and District Special Needs Association’ are gearing up for volunteers across the Duhallow Region and further afield to burn up the calories from its annual weigh-in that commences on Monday, February 1, in Cullen Community Centre at 8pm.

Collection for Haiti this Weekend

The Haiti earthquake occurred on Jan 12th 2010. Currently there are 170,000 confirmed dead and three million affected by this catastrophic event. As there hasn’t been a concerted effort to raise funds for food/shelter/medicine and everything else that these devastated people need, there will be a church door collection at all the masses this weekend (30th & 31st Jan), and all are encouraged to give generously as the affected people had nothing beforehand, and have even less now. From the parish newsletter last weekend:

Bishop Bill has decided that it would be good to afford parishioners of the Diocese an opportunity to respond to the current situation in Haiti. Next weekend there will be a special Church Door collection for those who wish to donate. This money will be sent to Trocaire who are working on the ground with Caritas International

The Cornelius Dennehy Murder Trial

Next week ‘Ceart Agus Coir’ (an Irish & English language series that charts the history of the death penalty in Ireland) looks into the case of the death of Millstreet man Cornelius Dennehy in 1938. (Feb 4th TG4 10.15pm.). The below is a summary of the programme:

IT was a tale of murder most foul that gripped the country and centred around one Laois man.

In January 1939, James Dermot Smyth from the Rushes, Wolfhill, was executed by hanging after he was convicted of the murder of a Cork butter buyer. The victim, Cornelius Dennehy, was found dead in his car near The Swan having been shot in the head at close range.

The pair were well known to each other and Smyth had even described Dennehy as his “best friend”, so the crime became known as the “best friend murder”. The grisly incident is the subject of an episode of TG4’s Ceart agus Cóir series on the death penalty in Ireland.

Death Notice: Hannah Mary Fleming, Mologhroe, Cullen

The death has occurred on Thursday, January 28, 2010 of Hannah Mary FLEMING, (née Casey) of Mologhroe, Cullen, Mallow, Cork
Reposing at Tarrant’s Funeral Home, Millstreet, Co. Cork this Friday evening from 6pm to 8pm, followed by removal to the Church of the Nativity, Cullen. Funeral Mass tomorrow, Saturday, at 2pm, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Bus Eireann to reduce Busses through Millstreet

Bus Eireann have announced that they are reducing the number of scheduled bus stops through Millstreet every day (Route 40 Cork-Tralee). However they will be running a shuttle bus from Macroom to Killarney via Millstreet twice in both directions every day

There will be thirteen departures a day in each direction from Cork to Tralee every day. All services will now operate on the main road via Ballyvourney only. Route 257 will provide a shuttle connection between Macroom/ Killarney and Millstreet/Rathmore. The new timetable changes come into effect from Feb 28th.

Busses passing through Millstreet will be at (Mon-Saturday only):

  • towards Killarney 12:55 & 15:55 &19:40
  • towards Macroom 09:40 & 14:40

Sundays

  • towards Killarney 14:40 19:40
  • towards Macroom 19:05

The old times through Millstreet were

  • Mon – Sat to Tralee: 10:40 14:40 18:40 21:40
  • Sundays to Tralee: 09:40 14:40 18:40 21:40
  • Mon – Sat to Cork:  07:30 10:05 13:05 15:05 19:05
  • Sundays to Cork:  10:05 13:05 15:05 19:05

This means that there are less than half the buses in the day, and that there is little chance of getting to Cork  or Killarney for a day trip. There are no peak time services for students especially (Friday evening & Sunday evening). We can only hope that a private bus company picks up the pieces, or that the trains  give more attractive pricing.

Often see her in my younger years in my better days in life
An attractive looking woman Maura, Dathai Dowling’s wife
A good mother to her children married to a decent man
The Dowlings of Murphy’s Terrace are a well known Millstreet clan,
I did feel sad on reading that Maura has passed away
For all of us eventually a final night and day
From the Dowling family gatherings her’s will be a missed face
The mother of the family there is none to replace,
Often seen her with Dathai and their children in Millstreet church on sunday
Since then so many years in time have ticked and ticked away
The role of wife and mother she did perform well
If there is a life after death with angels she now dwell
She remains young in memory as if time had stood still
With Dathai and their children in the Town by Clara Hill.

I photographed this lovely gentleman about 20 years ago on a rainy day in a pub on a dreary day in Millstreet. Spent a few hours chatting with him as I waited to pick my sister up from Drishane. I believe his name was Owen. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Fondest greetings dear listenes and I wish you all the very best on this cold ‘n frosty, Tuesday morning.

Time and time again Francie Duggan writes a beautiful poem on the Website,  about someone who has died in his native Millstreet and this week is no exception. His fitting lines about the late Lily Guerin (Justice) is a joy for those who knew her well. Well done again Francie.

At the monthly meeting of the Community Council, which was held on Tuesday night, it was decided to host a Community Awards Social again this year. It will be held at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Friday March 12th. Categories are for Service to the community, Hall of Fame, Youth Award, Cultural and Arts, & Unsung Hero. People are asked to nominate people or person whom they consider best entitled to come under any one of these headings. Please contact Secretary, Marie Bourke, or any council member.

Millstreet Camogie Club annual social

Millstreet Camogie Club held their annual social on Saturday 16th January 2010 in the Wallis Arms Hotel.  V.I.P’s on the night were the victorious      Under 11 team who won the Avondhu Under 11 league in 2009.  The “YOUNG” and the very young bopped the night away to the brilliant sounds of D.J. One Man and his Dog … and his Goat

There were some turning heads in Millstreet yesterday on seeing a hiker walking through the town. Not that hikers are unusual at all around here, but the fact that he was accompanied by a dog and goat! All in a days walking for Nathan Kingerlee, or should I say a week and a half’s walking! They are walking the Blackwater Way (168km) in aid of Kerry Mountain Rescue, and passed through Millstreet yesterday on their way to Geararoe B&B on the Macroom road. In Millstreet:

… People seem to very much take it in their stride, when they see us coming; although we did get a couple of strange looks, one couple crossed the street to avoid us, and Bob gave a little old granny a bit of a fright when he went to say hello to her!…

He is writing a blog every day of the trip, and yesterday he featured his trip to Millstreet. It’s an interesting read, with some great pictures.

Dromtariffe GAA Social

DROMTARIFFE GAA SOCIAL will take place at the Wallis Arms Hotel Millstreet on Friday January 29. Tickets are on sale at €25 each and are available from Derrinagree Post Office, Rathcoole Post Office or from Club Officers.

Music will be provided on the evening by the Celts. On the night the club will celebrate 125 years in existence and special guests on the night will be the victorious Minor Hurlers who won the Duhallow Minor Championship for the first time.

Chris Cleary gets the tackle in too late

TADGH Collins grabbed a hat-trick as Millstreet claimed their place in the second round of the Murphy’s Irish Stout County Cup after a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Knockraha at Pigeon Hill on Saturday in the first round of the County Cup.

It was a devastating display by Collins of what clinical finishing is all about.

e proved throughout to be too-hot to handle for the Knockraha defence and aside from his hattrick he also did some tremendous work on the left before setting up Brian Kelleher for number two.

Millstreet Matters: Concern for Ballydaly National School

RATHDUANE NATIONAL SCHOOL: The future of Rathduane National School is under the spotlight as parents and friends go all out to save their local rural based primary school base.

Concerned associates from the greater Ballydaly catchment area are hoping to offset dwindling numbers.

Rathduane National School is an excellent example of a primary school establishment that flourished and adapted to the changing fortunes of time. It has been and, hopefully to parents and friends, will remain a focal point for learning in their small community.

A beautiful down to earth person untainted by guile
She had such great warmth in her wonderful smile.

The woman of the shop there was well liked and well known
By all in Ballydaly three miles from Millstreet
As nice a person as one could wish to meet.

One known for her kindness and generosity
In Ballydaly she raised her family
Her family and friends will farewell her in tears
But good memories of her will outlive her by years.

In the shop where for many years she did reside
Amongst family and friends and relations Mrs Guerin died
To be kind and loving and hospitable her claim to fame
A Lily by nature and a Lily by name.

Millstreet 2009 Review: July August September

THE past year saw Millstreet maintain a positive image with numerous highlights and in the third of a four part series, a reflection of July, August and September reads

JULY

Circulars outlining the novel fundraiser towards completing two new classrooms and extended services is prompted by the Board of Management to Millstreet Presentation National School. Those involved in the project were allowed to use the money to build a permanent structure rather than accept prefabs.

Macroom Faith ‘n Light Group host annual Mass at Tubrid Well.

Millstreet Juvenile GAA featured on the Munster senior football championship programme.

The annual Cullen Young at Heart social evening takes place at Clancy’s Bar and Restaurant.

In GAA, Millstreet falter to Kilbrin in the Duhallow Junior A Hurling Championship first round.

Millstreet Veterinary Group open their state-of-the-art Cattery.

Roads will get even worse if funding isn’t increased

http://npg2.com/krdo/weatherblog/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/pothole.jpgOVER the past month or so, roads and water services all over Cork county have experienced widespread damage as a result of the appalling weather conditions.

This has led to many people suffering severe hardship and disruption to their daily lives – they were left without running water in their homes and their local roads were ripped up by the heavy rain, snow and ice.

In response to this crisis, an emergency repairs work programme fund of €6m has been put in place by Cork County Council to carry out emergency repairs to roads and water supplies in the county.
