Eily’s Report – 28th February

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a Cairde and welcome to my weekly Report.

The wild a blustery hurricane Ewan left no doubt in our minds that our annual March Fair would be  a non-runner last Sunday. Never in living memory did we see our town so devoid of trade stands and people for this historical event. A few die-hards did brave the elements to bring some horses, mbut they were few to say the least. We can only hope for better luck next tear.

The Community Council held a special meeting on Tuesday night to draw up plans for this years St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The members were very enthusiastic  and all were at the ready to take on the running of  the event in honour of our Patron Saint. A further meeting will be held in advance of the Big Day. Meanwhile the public are asked to prepare well and be at the ready to take part in the Parade which will held at 5pm on Friday March 17th.

The next organisers meeting will be held on Tuesday March 7th.There are prizes for the best Float, the best Fleet, also a prize for the Best Dressed window and lots more.

In Rathmore they will have their St. Patrick’s Day Parade  will be held in the afternoon of  Sunday March 12th.

This is Shrove Tuesday, the day that  we can all  fill ourselves with lovely  pancakes, before we start the long weeks of Lent until Good Friday, on April 14th.  Easter Sunday is on April 16th.  In olden times a strict fast had to be kept by all those between to age of 7 to 65 . One full meal and two small meals was the limit in the day . But as time went on this rule was modified and today it is up to the individual to do their own kind of Penance for Lent.

The AGM of our Active Retired Group was held at the Canon O’Donovan Centre last week, and a very large number attended, Sean Radley gave a wonderful talk on his Millstreet Museum and handed out copies of interesting items to those present. He went on to say that the Museum is open four days a week and is an ideal place to bring a visitor .

Sean also said that the recent addition of a photographer at the museum is of remarkable benefit.

At the election of officers Annabel O Sullivan handed  the Chair to Mary O Mahony, following her three years of faithful service and she remained on as Vice chair, Kit O Sullivan is secretary and Mary McSweeney Assistant Secretary,  Eileen O Riordan is Treasurer, assisted by Margaret Leader. Their program for the coming year is very full and varied to suit all tastes. Well done to the organisers.

This week we extend our best wishes to the Reen Family who will launch their newly extended pharmacy business in the Main Street, and all are invited to celebrate with them on this coming Friday March 3rd. Lots of special offers on the day.

Our state of the art E-Centre in the town Square is not being used to its full potential. It houses an up-to-date Board Room, Kitchen facility and rentable work stations which can be rented for as little as €50 a week, and  which are ideal for those needing space to start  or to continue with a business etc.

From their information leaflet these are their contacts, 029-21676, 026-20520, Email info@ ecentre.ie, web ecentre.ie. Please give this up to date facility your best support.
E-Centres are backed (for want of a better word) by the Cork Co. Council and IRD Duhallow.
