Influences on Irish Traditional Music on the ‘Where the road takes me’ series has now reached the half-way mark. This week we concentrate on one of our foremost music collectors who salvaged and preserved two thousand traditional songs and tunes.
This week John Greene travels to Inward Ardgroom, close to the village of Ardgroom, where Church of Ireland Canon James Goodman served as curate between 1858 and 1866. It was here in the beautiful and secluded rectory that Goodman packed his collection into four manuscripts.
We visit the ruins of his church which was later demolished in the early 1930s, and discover that ten windows from the church were placed in the local ballroom which opened on Christmas night 1937.
Noraleen O’Dwyer tells us how her father’s ballroom replaced cross roads dancing, patterns and Ball-Nights which were popular during Goodman’s time here.

We hear how Goodman rowed his boat to the centre of Ardgroom harbour to play his Uileann pipes, the music from which entertained a captive audience for miles around.
