Just a week ago we were praying for suitable weather and a good response to the FEI Championships which were about to begin and today we have every reason to thank the Lord for answering our prayers. One week on we have a host of happy memories to look back on. Sixteen European countries came and they made our town their own.
Friday came wet, and we got a night of the most severe thunder and lightning that some have ever experienced. To happen during the night made it all so fearful, with many experiencing damage to their homes and property. But when morning came there was no loss of life, and anything that was broken was fixable. Dogs should always be considered during a thunder storm and many were found wandering after a very terrifying night for them .
But aside of all that the equestrian championships went on unabated during the week. Sometimes at the Green Glens arena and other times on the rolling planes of Drishane Castle. There were thrills and spills galore, and ambulance services were required more than once but thankfully no fatal or serious injuries reported.
Great credit is due to our community who put their best foot forward and adorned our town with flags and bunting and welcome signs for the visitors. And they left with nothing but good things to say about their Millstreet experience … And there’s more to come.
The Millstreet International Horse Show will be held from August 2-6th.
The Millstreet International Horse Trials will run from Aug. 23-27th.
And the Annual Pony Owners Show in October. Please be ready to welcome these events which are so important in our yearly calendar

The fine weather also enhanced the many other events that were held at the weekend.
The Cullen Special Needs Association enjoyed great success with their annual Harvest day on Sunday. While Star Trax Recording Studios put on an afternoon of music and dancing. The slopes of Mushera Mountain also resounded to the sound of music and dancing, organised by the Ballinagree committee at the outdoor platform.
Our Men’s Shed Committee held a highly successful Soap Box race at Mountleader. All were blessed with fine weather.
Every good wish to 18 year old Luke O Donoghue, who will represent Ireland at the World Youth Fishing Championships which will be held in Slovenia in August.
