Eily’s Report – 5th June

Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a Chairde and welcome.

The beautiful weather over the weekend brought a mixture of joy and sadness as is always the case. Lives were lost both on road and water and our sympathy goes out to all involved. The month of June opened with a mighty thunder storm and flash floods that ripped roads from Mushera Mountain to town of Millstreet and images of the phenomenon were flashed across the globe as it occurred. But there were no reports, locally of damage to people or property and for that we must be grateful.

The annual Mass planned for St.Mary’s Cemetery on Friday evening, had to be moved to the parish church, and the waiting crowds just had time to make their escape before the torrents began.

But all things considered it was a wonderful bank Holiday weekend, with something for everyone. The Corpus Christi Procession through the Town after 11.30 Mass on Sunday was beautiful in brilliant sunshine. The little children in their First Holy Communion outfits spreading rose petals before the Host as it was carried by Canon John FitzGerald. The Holy Rosary was recited from his car by Jerry Doody, the Church Choir led the Hymns, and the pipe band also attended. Following Benediction at the temporary Alter at the town Square the Canon thanked all those who helped in any way with this traditional holy event.

That afternoon there was a change of scene when the annual fancy Dress stretcher Race was held in the town, starting from the Bush Bar. It drew a great crowd and spirits were high for this annual fundraiser, this time it was in aid of the Ian O Connell and Fight for Fionn funds. Well done to all concerned.
