THE HANDS OF MY FATHER:
“The tears well up in my eyes when I think of the hands of my father:
The hands of a peasant, brown and cracked like the ground when it has been bleached
by the sharp north wind:
wide were his hands like washing boards and split by hard labour…
But when they cut bread for us they were like those of the priest at the Offertory:
The hands of my father – they gave and they blessed.”
This is my own version of a poem in French from Brittany and I have just begun to sob quietly as I always do when I attach it to any of my still vivid memories of my two wonderful Irish parents from County Cork – my father was from Glandore and my mother was from Ballinagree.
