Following the parade the presenting of prizes to former winners was held at the podium outside the Wallis Arms Hotel, and then the real fun began when the visitors joined in with the locals, for food, drinks and music which set the precedent for the following five days. And ended with a gala banquet at the Green Glens on Saturday night. During the week they climbed our mountains, visited our beauty spots and shopped in the town. Many promising to come back .The International Mounted Games Championships, lived up to all that was expected of them from July 8th to 14th here in Millstreet. The opening parade through the town on Tuesday evening was a truly wonderful sight. Riders as young as twelve years of age and adults from 17 European countries on spirited ponies prancing through our streets each displaying the flags of the homelands and wearing many coloured outfits . They were led by our much admired pipe band. Public Safety was all important and the streets were lined on both sides with interlinked fencing. The crowds came in their hundreds and enjoyed the spectacle in brilliant sunshine. Our friendly Garda members on hand to see that all went well.
And the great thing was that the organisers sincerely told us that in all the 17 European Countries where these games are held, that Millstreet and the Green Glens surpasses them all. For welcome and friendship and world class facilities, Millstreet is the best. So well done to all concerned.
Many people in the town decorated their houses for the occasion and there were prizes for the best. The top two were Claire Twomey, Main Street and Mulcahy’s Pharmacy in the town square.
Next event at the Green Glens will be the International Millstreet Horse Show, which will run from Aug 14th to 18th. Again with many foreign Countries taking part. Already there is demand for accommodation and those with some to offer please contact the office at the Green Glens 02970800.
Well done to the Duggan Family who continue to keep us on the World Stage. And well done to our Community Council who are never found wanting on such occasions.
The sub-committee of the Community Council are holding a Party Day in the Park on Saturday July 27th, please come along and enjoy this outdoor event. Support them well and be there to lend some help if the need arises. The day will include A Teddy Bear’s Picnic from 12 noon, afternoon tea at 3, live music, BBQ, and lots more. Contact 0871532885. This is Farm Safety week and all people of the land are asked to be extra careful in their line of work. Tragically 12 people have lost their lives on the land already this year. Lots of farmers work alone nowadays and may not be able to seek help when something goes wrong. Which means they have to be extra vigilant while operating machinery.
Our local Vintage Club never seem to sit back, in their efforts to support needy causes. On July 28th they will embark on a monster Truck Run in aid of our Air Ambulance Service, (ICRR). Based at K&L’s Yard at Mountleader from where they will take in an interesting tour of Rathmore, Knocknagree, Cullen, Kanturk etc. ending up back at base at Mountleader for a Gala BBQ.
Denis O Sullivan will be taking part with his bus and if anybody would like to go along ,they’d be welcome to take a seat free of charge. Please give this great venture you best support for this very worthy cause.
The Cullen and District Special Association will hold their 21st annual Harvest Afternoon next Sunday, July 21st, starting with a family Fun Run at 12.30. More helpers always welcome.

Our countryside and flower gardens look amazing this Summer.Roses especially are putting on a show like never before. And those involved in Tidy Towns are getting real rewards for their labour, with baskets and boxes showing beautiful blossoms . The long hot summer seems to suit them. But still cant do without the rain and we have to thank the Good Lord for sending it when we need it. We had very heavy rain while we slept last night which was much needed.The fine spell is making work easier for farmers and those engaged in saving turf or anybody depending on the weather. This week a large number of our little school children are enjoying Summer Camp in our Town Park. Many thanks to the organisers .
