Yvonne Harrington has on her blog Coursing Diary posted photos of the coursing meet in Millstreet yesterday. They include Millstreet man Donie O’Mahony who came away with a cup on the day. She also has posted a gallery of 62 photos from the day on SmugMug.com photo site.
Reminds me of someone’s (Oscar Wilde?) definition of fox- hunting: “the unspeakable in full pursuit of the uneatable”.
Yes, it is from Wildes play: A Woman of No Importance (Act I).
you can read the play on Google Books.
… but his “unspeakable” was referring to the average “English country gentelman” of the time!
You might like to think that…..but in this sport the aim is to test the dogs…..every care is taken to assist the hares to escape unharmed….and 99.9 of them do and are realeased back into the wild after Coursing is finnished. What you do not see of course is the huge amount of conservation work that is done by coursing clubs to help keep wild hares healthy and in high numbers
True, of course, although the metaphor may still be apt.
