I’m hoping you might be able to help me. I am from South Wales and am trying to trace my Irish ancestors. According to the 1921 Census and the 1939 Register my great-grandmother, Mary Ford(e) was born in County Cork, 18 November 1888. Her marriage certificate notes that her father was William Ford(e) who was an Agricultural Labourer. The closest match to these details I can find is the birth of a Mary Forde born 10 December 1887 in Drishane, Millstreet, father William Forde (Farm Labourer living in Rathduane) and mother Johannah Forde (formerly Cremin). Places I know or have been told Mary lived are Mountain Ash and Llanbradach (South Wales). Do you know of any individuals with the surname Forde or Cremin in Millstreet that might be connected to me?
Huge thanks / Diolch
Beth
Hi Beth, a few years ago I researched Mary’s brother Edward who participated in WWI.
This is an extract:
“Marriage of William Forhane (28, farmer) of Inches to Johanna Cremin (22) of Knocknabro on 14th Feb 1874 at Killaha Chapel (Glenflesk). William is the son of Edmond (farmer), and Johanna is the son of Michael (farmer). (Despite the name Forhane (an old Irish version of Forde) , this is very likely their marriage). Knocknabro is on the opposite side of Caherbarnagh mountain from Millstreet. ”
A lot of people from Millstreet went to the Mountain Ash area, and a good number of those joined the war effort.
Your great grandmother Mary was present at the death of her parents who died seven days apart in 1905 from influenza.
She had a sister Lizzie Who married an O’Connor in Newmarket
I don’t know where the family are now, but I can send you the information I gathered if you wish.
Michael,
Thanks so much for this information. Really interesting! I would love for you to send me the information you gathered. My email is <email>. It would be great to know how you are related to these individuals too. Look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes
Beth
Very good Michael. We have since discovered that Mary married Denis Dineen from Tullig in 1905 and they had a son Jeremiah born 1906 in Knocknaloman. They then emigrated to Wales. Mary later married Daniel Shea, born Gurrane, Banteer, but family later moved to Rathcool. We have found William Forde’s brothers Peter born 1839 and John born 1845 emigrated to Missouri with descendants still in US. I wonder Michael did you find any family for Edward (WW1) in Canada? Mary’s sister Lizzie Connor and her family lived in Keel, Boherbue, in case anybody recognised that family.
