St. Patrick’s Week, or should I say the week with St. Patrick’s Day in it. We are already half way through the season of Lent and St. Patricks Day always gives us a little break. A day when we feel that we can partake of some of the things we’ve given up for Lent. Here in town our Community Council and all their helpers are going to pull out all the stops to make this years Fest a good one. We know now what it was like during the long years of Covid when we were not allowed out to vent our feelings for our National Patron. Time to make up for lost time now. Also out in the picturesque village of Carriganima they will do it and on the following Sunday March 19th.v They come to us and we go to them, well in keeping with the wonderful relationship that has existed between our two places since time began. So it will be all systems go in Millstreet on Friday afternoon for our 4.45/5 o’clock start. Once again the sprawling car/truck park at the Green Glens will be the preparing and starting point .The ever popular Peter Lane on Blackwater Sound Fame will entertain the crowds at the reviewing stand in the Town Square and will herald in the items for our grand parade 2023. Fine prizes are there for the best of each category and the Hotel and all the our other food outlets will guarantee that no one goes home hungry or thirsty. This week the Community Council offers their sincere sympathy to their esteemed member, Joseph Lawlor and all the Ffamily on the death this week of his beloved mother,Mary. R.I.P.
These are very historic times it being the one hundredth anniversary of the atrocities of the Civil war. The Ballyseedy debacle standing out among the rest for it’s barbarity and strangely enough I have a sort of connection with that date. My dear departed Dan was born on that day, March 7th and when you think of it, it goes to prove the resilience of the people of that time. Dan’s mMother Nora(Lane) was a staunch member of Cumann na mBan and his dad Johnnie Buckley was an active member of the IRA of the time and spent some time imprisoned in Spike Island for the cause. . Very troubled times by all accounts and yet they saw fit to get on with their lives, getting married, setting up a home starting a family, while the Irish around them were killing each other. People like them forged ahead, reared their families, made their livings and turned those awful years into something good, very good. I think we have a lot to learn from them, things don’t look too good in the world of today, but if we have enough of good people like those I’ve just mentioned I believe that in the next hundred years the people of then will look back and thank us for holding on when the going got tough.
Our Active Retired group were taken on a wonderful trip to Siamse Tire in Tralee last Saturday afternoon. The 50 seater Keeley’s coach was full to capacity and everybody on board was sure to get the best of care and attention on the outing. Starting out at 4 pm, passengers from Cullen and Rathmore were picked up on the way. There was a stop at O’Riada’s wonderful Hotel outside Castleisland for dinner. The friendly staff knew us all from a previous time and we got VIP treatment. The dinner menu contained plenty of choices and time was on our side which made the meal all the more enjoyable. Then it was all back on board for half-hour trip the Tralee and Siamse. The Show was called ‘A Celebration’ of Ireland, so we didn’t really know what to expect. As it turned out it was very enjoyable, lots of patriotic songs mingled with some very funny sketches and the red velvet seating almost made you want to stay longer. Then it was all back on board again for the road home, arriving in Millstreet just at midnight. All for €60. It’s a pity that more men don’t join this wonderful association, some saying they don’t hear about these things. For a modest fee they can become members and as well as being covered by insurance they will be informed by text of all the activities of the club,then it’s their own choice if they want to partake. One of our members 89 year young, Mary (Andrew) Hickie is full of beans just now because her lovely daughter Aileen is gone into the Guiness Book of Records for completing no less than 6 Marathons. The list is as follows, London, New York, Berlin, Chicago, Boston, Tokyo. Married to TV star Matt Cooper, Aileen makes regular appearances on the popular TV show ‘Today’ with Daithi & Maura. Never failing to drop in for a cup with Mom before returning to her home in Dublin. They have a growing family of six. So join with me and give Aileen and all her family our heartiest congratulations.
The loss of hearing what the priest says from the altar in our church continues to be a very serious problem. We miss out on so much of the sermons etc. of our Pastors. I’m told that in other places they have installed a devise called a ‘Loop’ which deals successfully with the problem. I wonder could this be done. Perhaps somebody who is in the know can help. Should there be a charge I’m sure the congregation would only be too glad to meet it. Further to that just now, I just got the following info by text, and I Quote.
“Business or venues that install the Loop systems have virtually no maintenance on the system and do not have to purchase or maintain/sanatise /or repair headphones, such as those used with infrared or FM systems. There is no limit as to the number of users of the system-it is virtually unlimited. ”
Last week I asked people to stop throwing litter on our roads etc. and I must say that the response is really noticeable. Many thanks to those who answered the call, please keep up the good work.
The wonderful Special Needs Association in Cullen have done it again and last night was the culmination of yet another very successful fundraising Weigh In. The final results will be announced as soon as they come in.
The Camogie Club are hosting a Table Quiz at the Wallis Arms Hotel on this Thursday night March 16th. starting at 8. Please give them your best support.
