Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to my weekly Report.
God helps those who help themselves and it certainly proved to be true when Sean Murphy once again braved the elements and went ahead with the Declan Nerney Concert in the lovely village of Carriganima on Sunday night. Nora Tarrant and myself had the honour of conveying the popular Star from Mary O’Sullivan’s parlour across the road to his magnificent band stand inside a huge marquee. In his opening cupla focail, Declan said that he was in awe of the venue and in Sean and his helpers. At 3 o’clock that evening he said, with the rain pouring down there was little hope of going ahead with his show under the skies but when he returned a little after 6 he found a huge marquee in place which covered the entire dancing area from side to side. Once again the spirit of rural Carriganima came into play as the rain continued to fall. They pressed ahead as the people slowly started to arrive and by 8 o’clock the rains had stopped as we marched the great Declan Nerney onto his stage, secure in the knowledge that the show could go on. The irony of it was that the marquee wasn’t even needed because there was no rain for the rest of the night. The new boy in town Pat Mulcrone entertained the crowds in the bar from early on so a great time was had by all and the crowd was even bigger than last time. Well done to all. Buíochas le Dia.
Our Active retired group were treated to something new for their outing last week. Following breakfast at a large garden Centre in Ballygarvan they were taken to the Customs House Quay in the City where they boarded the Cruiser for a two hour trip on the Port of Cork, taking in such places as Blackrock Castle, Fota Island, Passage West, Haulbowline, Spike Island and Cobh. There was a conductor on board to relate details of all that was there to see. The craft has two levels and includes coffee/teas snacks and drinks, plus a rest room. Booking is essential and can be done on line. €27 for adults, ARA €3 less. They also do Twilight Cruises. I highly recommend it regardless of age.
You should tell your troubles to everyone. When I revealed the story of the bird invasion of my rooms, other people opened up about theirs and some of the their stories made very light of mine, proving once again that a trouble shared is a trouble halved. Help was near at hand and in a few hours one morning my rooms were clean as new and smelling as sweet.
Last week I had the pleasure of sitting down to a family dinner with including Tom, the man who was faced with certain death or lifelong disability following his terrible road/bicycle accident. There is very little evidence of his recent disaster now. His lovely wife Mary and himself have plans for a family holiday in the near future plus more ambitious ones later on. Be reminded once again that the age of miracles is not past.
We must congratulate our lovely Gillian on sweeping the board in the World of Fashion again. She looked divine in her beautiful outfit and was well deserving of the massive prizes for the Best Dressed there. Keep up the good work Gillian and Raymond. We are very proud of you all the time. Your gift is one in a million and never fails to give us a lift.
Marie Twomey and her community singers brought a lot of joy to more than one place in recent days. On Sunday they went along to the local Hospital where they entertained the patients and were very well received, were treated to lovely refreshments before leaving . First thing on Monday they were at the Day Centre ,where they sang merry songs for the day trippers, many of whom joined in song with them and some stayed on for dinner. Because of other commitments I’m sorry to say that I missed both events.
The Credit Union is celebrating sixty years in Mallow. The branch in Millstreet didn’t start up until later. But when it does I hope it will get the public praise that is its due. It’s sad these days when a rural branch can get eaten up by one big centre and now we’re often called Mallow Credit Union, Millstreet. Why not Millstreet for itself. I can recall when the branch was set up in town. For some of us it was our first time hearing of it and it was rather mysterious. People who worked in offices or teachers etc. grasped it from the start and they worked voluntarily for years to put it on it’s feet. Before paid people were taken on. Over the years the Credit Union has done trogan work for our people and when our branch reaches it 60th. I hope the occasion will help to recall details of it’s early days and the great work it has done.
Copies of the Financial Report of Millstreet Parish for 2022 are available in the Church. It includes a very nice message from Canon John well worth reading as well as the money side of the report, it gives the number of Baptisms, funerals, weddings, Holy Communions of that year. The good news is that the numbers going to Mass has increased.
