Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a cáirde and welcome to my Report.
The Summer is back, and even if it may not stay for very long let us wallow in the beautiful balmy, misty soft mornings as they give away to bright sunny days. Mind you I’m even finding it hard to confine myself to the indoors to write my report and didn’t start until I roamed around my grassy lawn kindly mown by my next door neighbour when my usual man was nursing a sprained ankle. There is still plenty to see and enjoy out there. Even my neighbours king-sized cosmos towering above the garden wall are an added bonus and sitting on a nice chair in a favourite spot is hard to beat. The many fixtures that were on over the weekend were lucky with the weather and there were a lot. The weekend started off well on Friday night when the Duarigle Gaels won the U12 finals and were marched into town in celebration. On Sunday the Ballinagree Vintage Club celebrated their 20th Anniversary, while here in Millstreet the mighty Model Car Exhibition organised by the Millstreet Vintage Club brought great crowds to the K&L Warehouse in Mount Leader for a day of wonder and joy for all ages. The amount of entries had to be seen to be believed. Rows and rows of every kind of model car and tractor, etc. Even a ten foot high wind turbine all the way from Co. Meath, gently winding away at its own leisurely pace. Further on there were mini sized JCBs and loaders being remote controlled to fill sand or gravel into mini trailers with acute presicion. Little children had plenty to do at the Lego stand where they were given free reign to construct the thing of their dreams. A fast food facility saw that there was food for those who needed it and members of the Club were on hand to make sure that all went according to plan. Sean Radley was there to take lots of pictures. I asked some stall holders about the show and they all seemed very pleased, some saying it was the best since the likes have resumed since covid. Exhibitors from all over the country support one another. Next one will be in Tullamore in a couple of weeks and all heads are up for it.
Our Vintage Club are forever raising money for good causes and on Sunday next October 15th they meet in Carriganima at 11 am. All Tractors old and new welcome. This weekend will see the return of the 41 st. National Dairy Show on Friday and Saturday this week. October 13 and 14.
Over the past 40 years the National Dairy Show at the Green Glens has grown to become the country’s premier indoor dairy showcase. It provides companies with an excellent opportunity to meet with the dairy industry and offers a platform to promote our dairy sector on both a national and international level. In spite of the lack of their indoor arena the organisers rose above the problem and erected alternative under-cover space to stage this mammoth event. Making it an event not to miss. I always make a point of going and even though there are big changes over the years, it is still connected with the way we made our living and a cow is still a cow. I love being among them and seeing how far our humble efforts have grown and flourished with the passage of time.
I want to wish Noel Buckley a very speedy recovery following his hip replacement operation. Being the great community man that he is, he still chaired the AGM of our Community Council back in September, in spite of his aches and pains. It was a very good meeting and there was a fine attendance. Chairman Noel presided and he gave an interesting account of the Community Council and the many developments and improvements that it has achieved since it’s inception in 1977. Secretary Maura Kiely read the minutes of the last AGM. Margaret Bourke, treasurer and our accountant Willie John O’Flynn presented the treasurers report and it was accepted. Then the meeting held a lively and interesting discussion which included some ambitious plans for further improvements details of which will be announced at a future date. At the Election of officers Maura Kiely was re-elected Secretary, Margaret Bourke re-elected as treasurer But as there were no proposals for a new chairperson, this was postponed to a future date.
