Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a cáirde and welcome to my Report.
Starting off a new week, the sun shining brightly making the world looking around us looking good. Yet when you venture out the unexpected wind sends you buttoning up you coat and pulling down your woolie cap. Most of the trees and shrubs have shed their foliage by now. The leaves which adorned our gardens and country sides for months are now lying low where they will wilt and decay and turn into nourishing compost to feed their mother plant in the next season, to start the mysterious cycle of nature all ever again.
We have lots to celebrate this week Buíochas le Dia. Our gallant Senior Scor Quiz team brought home the bacon on Saturday night when they won the All-Ireland Final of at the INEC .They really did us proud. See their pictures elsewhere on our website.
Well done also Linda Desmond daughter of our popular Lollypop lady Nuala and hubby Declan on her fantastic gold medal win at the recent National Elite Boxing Championships finals.
Singer Supreme Darren Kiely again played to a full house in Limerick at the weekend as part of his countrywide tour.
Star of the stage Stefan Healy, Grandson of the late Ken Brennan, whose acting talents are promising to take him to very high places.
These are but a few of our people who are keeping the name of Millstreet on the map, and we congratulate them all ,and let them know that their wonderful achievements are an inspiration to others, as well as bringing joy to us all at a time when we all need a little lift.
Our Community Council held their monthly meeting on Tuesday night. Anne Collins deputising for Chairman Noel Buckley. Once again their annual Calendar is ready for publication. This issue gave everybody a say on it’s content. When they asked people to submit their favourite pictures for inclusion. And while they were unable to include them all, they feel that their wide range of interesting and historic samples will be pleasing to all. Copies are now in the shops at €10 each. An ideal Christmas gift.
The big news of the meeting was the account of the Council’s recent purchase of the cinema premises in the West End. They plan to move their popular Gym from the Youth Centre to the cinema which will enable them to make more badly much needed space to extend the crésche. The building comprises of the two-tiered cinema plus a large dwelling house beside the street. Each with it’s own entrance. Needless to say fundraising will be a big challenge but what’s new. Ever since I joined the Community Council fundraising has always been an obstacle. But the future of our people always gave us the drive and determination to forge ahead. A crew much younger that I are at the helm now and I trust that they will find the means to advance in spite of all obstacles to ensure that every child of Millstreet can get their foot on the first step of their schooling here. The first step, the crésche, is the crucial one because they will stay where they get it.
To start the ball rolling, the proceeds of the new calendar will go to the cinema fund.
On behalf of the members I’d like to extend a sincere get well wish to both chairman Noel Buckley and his wife Margaret who are recovering from surgery .Noel from a hip replacement and Margaret from a knew knee. Get well very soon.
In latter years the cinema building was put to great use by Matt Murphy who carried out a unique furniture maker, polishing and refurbishing business there. Samples of his craftmanship is gone to many homes and business places. Many a piece was given a new lease of life when he lovingly cleaned repaired and polished them up like new. Some of us having samples of his work to grace our homes . But times change and the desired for white/cream painted chipboard stuff ,overtook the classy polished dark wood of the past . We will miss Matt as a master craftsman in our town and wish him all the best for the future. As our town has plans new plans for the old cinema.
