Eily’s Report – 14th May

Dia is Mhuire dióbh go léir a cairde and welcome to my Report.

Fondest greetings everyone and I hope you’re allenjoying the beautiful weather. There was a host of fixtures planned for the entire weekend, from Darkness into Light, First Holy Communions, Vintage Run, Dancing at the Wallis for our ARA and their friends from other Clubs,  to name but a few. Plus the lovely weather for others to make plans of their own.  During the previous week our farmers were busy gathering in the silage, following all the weeks and months of rain and others getting their turf cut, all making sure that the coming winter will  be good for both man  beast.  I trust that all who had a good and successful time will give thanks to the Good Lord for his wonderful gift of fine weather that made it all possible.

But please take good care in the hot sun. I’m afraid I fell victim of its rays even though I did not spend much time out in it. I’m by no means a sunworshipper and my time out was no more than twenty minutes, because I was alerted by it’s burning rays but It was too long. Next day the backs of my hands  were swollen and covered in red blotchy marks ,very sore, also and the tip of my nose and of all things the top of my head. I’ve had sunburn in the past but this was different. More severe but a friend told me that it was because I was on strong medication. It never occurred to me that the antibiotics that I was on for an ear infection would act in this way. So be warned if you are likewise. Outside of that another friend informed me that she got burned through her clothes (single garment) on one of the hot days. So there you have it. Both sides of the story and I hope it will help others to escape this nasty experience.

All eyes were on the skies during the week.  All looking out for the great phenomenon known as the Arora Bora Allis.  I didn’t get to see it but people were kind enough to put on beautiful pictures of the multi coloured skies on line for all to see.  They were quiet common when I was a child. They were no novelty really because they were a regular occurrence. They lit up our late evening skies and we were told that it was the sun reflecting off the snow on the North Pole. I wonder is it the same today. Our Man Pete would come in for work in the morning and while making our breakfast would ask “Did ye see ‘d’oul’(the old) rouwly  bowly  allis lash night?” We wouldn’t dwell on it because we’d probably have have a better story for him, perhaps the big rat that the terrier killed in the piggery, or the flock of bats that almost hit us as the flew past in the twilight. The call of the snipe in the marsh beyond the field below the house, sounding like a goat, never failed to amuse our young evenings. Or the lonesome call of a lone Caoirluan, (Curlue) as he winged his way to wherever he called home.  Not forgetting the distinctive call of the corncrake as he crept along ,unseen through the long dew laden uncut  hayfield. In bed at night we often had no good word to say for the corncrake. Summer evenings with all windows open his sharp clean voice made sleep almost impossible, but now that he’s gone what we’d give to hear that loud crake of his again.   How we loved to stay out to hear and see them all ,well until after dark, until we got the strict call to come in for the Rosary.
