Dia is Mhuire dióbh go léir a cairde and welcome to my Report.
September is moving along beautifully, giving us lots of sunshine and some of the loveliest hours of tranquil pleasant moments if you were lucky enough to capture them. The fruits of the Earth continue to mature and ripen. Every day there are offers of juicy plums, damsons, and wild crabs . Soft fruits which have to be nipped at the right time before they over ripen and fall of the branch. The same goes for the hazel nuts. How we loved to climb the precarious limbs to retrieve them. When we had teeth of our own, it was no bother for us to crack the hard shells with our teeth to get out the little treasure within. Rose hips are ablaze of colour just now as their greenish yellow fruits are fast turning to a rosy red. We have often heard of Rose Hip syrup but never made any. There was really no need to venture into the world of such high class preserves when our world was full of blackberries and strawberries, rhubarb and a whole range of items which gave us enough of jars of jam to see us right through the winter.
The open day at the FET (Adult Learning Centre) was an outstanding success last week. The Date coincided with the visit of our Minister for Finance Jack Chambers and his entourage. Marie Twomey who is the manager of this important place was there to welcome him in. He was accompanied by the popular political duo Andreas Moynihan and his sister Gobnait and many others. A very large crowd of people of many creeds and colours drawn from various voluntary bodies were also there. Marie led the politicians through the large crowd and out into the garden at the back leaving no stone unturned in pointing out to them the wide range of important of the work that is being carried out there. And in his Cúpla Focail at the end Minister Chambers said how impressed he was at what was being achieved in this relatively small space just off the Main Street. Refreshments were served and a gala atmostphere brought the important event to a close. Well done to all who worked so hard to make it possible.
I want to wish a very Happy 18th Birthday of my lovely great-Grand daughter Katie (Katlyn) Buckley. Eldest daughter of Jonathan and Noreen (Twomey) Her big day was celebrated in Style at her home in the shadow of the ancient Kilmeedy Castle last Saturday. The evening was balmy and warm and as darkness fell the floodlights lit up the scene as the young and to not-so-young mingled while the old edifice looked on. I passed around and met all the lovely young boys and girls who came to wish Katie well as the music played into the harvest time air, then I found a quiet corner where I allowed my mind to wonder and take it all in. This lovely place that I married into in 1957 and came out the other end of all the good days and not so good days that made up my life for the following 31 years. Further to that as I looked on all the groups of young people enjoying themselves, I was stirred by the joy and happiness of it all as the poor old castle looked down with her history of battles and killings back in the day. Her broken parapets wrecked by the greatest tyrant of them all Oliver Cromwell. The field in the near distant known as Inche na Gloigin, the field of the skulls where a desperate battle took place in the days of O’Sullivan Beare. All is peaceful now and can you blame me if the scene before me gave me such a warm feeling inside. Like my own life with it’s memories of the good days and not so good days, so has the lovely old castle. Sadly because of insurance access to the Castle can no longer be allowed.
A great crowd attended the special Mass which was said on Monday morning for the members of our Active Retired Club. Some members read the prayers for the Faithful and Fr. John said special prayers. The Mass was followed by tea and refreshments at the Parish Centre. Many thanks to all who organised this lovely occasion.

I had a pleasant surprise one morning last week when my phone rang at ten o’clock and the voice at the other end was none other than the one and only Daniel O’Donnell. Because we were not free to go to his concert in Killarney, some months ago and he wanted to know if all was well with us. He was at the Airport on his way to Canada, but made the time to invite us to join him at the Opera House in Cork for his next concert on Oct.1st.2024. He still values his trip to Millstreet and the great reception that himself and Majella got from the people here on St.Patrick’s Day six years ago.
