Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a cáirde and welcome to my report.
The weather may be unseasonable but it certainly is lovely. It’s so unusual to see the leafless trees and plants sticking out new buds and even a few blossoms. My lemon tree which didn’t do so well earlier on is having a hay day. New tops on the branches and even a flower and strange as it may seem we may as well enjoy them. The lawn continues to need mowing and the mushroom like fungi pops up all over the place. It’s nice to be able to get out more and with the leaves all gone off trees the views are much better as you drive along. It’s hard to believe that Christmas is only a matter of weeks away.
Needless to say the Festive Season will not be the same for our family this year. The loss of a member affects the whole family. And even though she could do nothing for herself Leah Mae endeared herself to us all, young and old. Her parents Decky & Michelle gave her 24/7 care for the eleven and a half years that she lived. But God is good and they were lucky to have Geraldine and Mick living next door and they were sure of their full support at all times. It often involved a mad dash to the hospital when she’d have one of her turns and death was eminent. Even to Dublin at crucial times. Michelle fought with all her might to get the new hospital in Dublin built out of the city on to a green field site because she knew the trauma of trying to get through the city traffic with a near to death child on board. With the power of her computer she rounded up hundreds if not thousands of signatures to support her cause, from people like herself who had experienced the same thing over and over. But the powers that be wouldn’t listen. Leah Mae is safe in heaven now and the hospital is nothing short of another white elephant. The grief at the loss of a child is palpable but we are all there to support them and their eight year old little girl and little boy of two.
Children are such a joy and it gave me such a lift on Sunday afternoon to get a call(helped by his Mom) from a little seven year old half twin, great grand son asking me to help him with his homework. To answer some questions about my own young days. Had you a car, had you TV, had you a fridge, the list went on and on ,needless to say the reply was no to every one of them and when the call ended I began to recall, to think back on all the comforts of life that we have amassed over the years. Things that we take totally for granted today. Other things like tissues, toilet paper, firelighters, electricity not to mention all the kitchen appliances which makes our lives today so much easier. Another great grand child of 18 wanted me to tell herself and a school pal about the history of the local area, God bless children they never fail to lift you out of the doldrums by just changing the subject.
I want to wish a very happy 70th birthday to Danny McSweeney, formerly of Kilmeedy Bridge, now living in Donoughmore. All the members of his family came together to celebrate with him. Some from America, Kinsale etc. It was a delight to meet them because we knew them all so well when they grew up with our own and the bonds they made back then are as strong as ever to-day. We wish them a safe journey home and hope to see them soon again.
Many congratulations to our brilliant Tidy Towns on gaining an impressive ten points and winning a bronze medal in this years competition. It’s enough to stir us all to put our full support and help behind them at all times.
