Sue Dennehy

When I was young she was an ageing woman
She lived in her small house in the West End
And she was much loved in and around Millstreet
Sue Dennehy was everybodys friend.

A daughter of Denny Dennehy the greyhound owner breeder
At Cork and Shelbourne park his dogs raced to renown
He became famous far beyond Duhallow
His name was known distant from Millstreet Town.

There was so much to like about that woman
For she would only help you if she could
And she was not one to speak badly of others
Sue Dennehy had in her so much good.

I would like to think that her name will live forever
In Millstreet Town in view of Clara Hill
Why should the good in death then be forgotten
When some evil people are remembered still.

Sue Dennehy was a woman in a billion
A role model in the Millstreet I did know
She went out of her way to help out others
And I still remember her from years ago.

  1. Hi Francis
I love to read your poems, you have brought back wonderful memories of the lovely Sue Dennehy, I lived next door to Sue for a few years and she had some lovely stories, she would forecast the weather by looking up to Clara, she would say if you can pick a bush off Clara bad sign for the day, I live in Drishane Rd now and I still look at Clara to decide if I’ll hang out washing! Jim my husband remembers you well, he is a Millstreet man came from middle of town, mother was fondly known as Kathy Dinneen,
I look forward to reading your wonderful poems, keep up the good work,
    God Bless now

  2. Hello Elizabeth

Thank you for commenting on this piece about Sue Dennehy i do like your little story on her on picking out a bush off Clara ‘no clothes drying day’ she was such an endearing and kind and wise person indeed, i do know your husband Jim a son of Peter Murphy’s of Mill View and his mum Kathy Dinneen was an aunt of the Caseys, Jim through his dad i believe is a cousin to the former great Cork Gaelic Footballer from Kilmurray Sean Murphy, i hope i have got the right Jim Murphy here or i will end up with some egg on my face as the saying goes, this is such a great site for us migrants who do live far away from Millstreet and we do feel ever grateful to Michael Cashman, Sean Radley, Eily Buckley, Hannelie O Connor and John Tarrant amongst others for keeping us up to date with recent happenings in the countryside by Clara Hill, good on you Elizabeth for remembering Sue in such a good way.
