The pleasant weather over the weekend gave people of all ages a welcome chance to enjoy the great out of doors. The annual vintage and old time threshing day in Cullen was an outstanding success. Their varied program ensured that there was something there for everyone.
So well done once again to the wonderful Special Needs Association.
In turn they want to thank all those who supported them and helped in any way with their latest fundraiser. The LTV crew were there to record it for your viewing when programs resume in the fall.
Large crowds strolled in the Country Park, while others took on some of our new loop walks.
Another venture that enjoyed great success was the Adult Learning Week which was held at the Community School. The brainchild of the vibrant Elaine Hooper, it was a first, and judging by the support that it received ,it will surely be an annual event from now on. It consisted of two hour courses per day , from Monday to Friday. Subjects included. Computer lessons, knitting, and other crafts, Basket work, Health & Well Being. Singing. and Painting.
It gave a wonderful lift to all concerned ,not only from a learning aspect ,but it left people know that there is a wealth of companionship and hobbies out there to be availed of.
The Grand Finale on Friday included a concert by the singing class, drawn from their week’s work, and a display of all the work done by the other groups. Nobody wanted to go home, they wanted the moment to last forever. But the only consolation was, that a lot of more social outlets will grow from the great venture. In particular there was a real hunger for the formation of a singing group. And all those who would be interested can hand on their names to Elaine Hooper. Immediately following the closing of the Adult Learning week a very important launch took place at the Community School Library. Our local TD Anna Collins took time out from her busy schedule to launch
The Millstreet Directory of Community Services, which was the brainchild of Nora O Connell and fully supported by both private and public groups and individuals. It is beautifully presented and is a must for every household, containing as it does the full list of all the community services that are up and running here. Copies are available, free of charge in the Post Office, and many other places around the town. Please see that everybody gets one.
Two nuns from the Medical Missionary of Mary gave a talk at our masses here on Sunday on the dreadful famine situation in Africa and asked the people to please donate to the worthy cause. The response was most heartening. And they were very grateful, saying that every cent would be used wisely to help the needy in that far off land.
The appeal for scrap iron met with a wonderful response here on Saturday. The proceeds will be used to help put astro turf on our playing grounds. People kept coming all day with all kinds of old iron. And I’m sure that many yards etc are much cleaner and tidier as a result. The takings will be weighted to-day and only then will we know to financial outcome of the scheme.
Church Gate collection in Millstreet this weekend will be in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.
