Former West Tipp GAA Board secretary Jerry Ring was presented with the Munster Council’s Special Merit Award at the Council’s annual awards ceremony at the Malton Hotel, Killarney last Saturday night.
Jerry, a native of Ballydaly in the parish of Millstreet, Co. Cork is a much travelled Cork man who ended up in Tipperary and served with distinction as secretary of the West Board. He graduated from UCC in 1964 and after 5 years working in Africa he taught for 2 years in the North Monastery before joining the teaching staff of the Abbey CBS in Tipperary Town. Jerry played football and hurling in his native Cork. He won a Dr. Hackett Cup Senior Hurling medal with De La Salle Waterford in 1960 and represented the college in football and hurling that year, reaching the Harty Cup semi-final, which was lost to Limerick CBS.
Once in Tipperary he became involved with the Abbey CBS school teams. He refereed games at every level for schools and the West Division. He became secretary of the Arravale Rovers club, for which he also played both hurling and football. His organisational and fixtures planning skills were soon recognised and he was elected as secretary of the West Tipp Board in 1982, a position he held for 29 years. He was a member of many County Board Committees and a County Board member for 33 years. He also served on the Scór Committee for many years.
Jerry has provided invaluable print and photographic records of GAA activities around the division and beyond during this period and is also a long serving member of the Tipperary Year Book Committee. He has presented a weekly half-hour GAA programme on Tipperary Mid-West Community Radio for many years also.
A gentleman to his fingertips, Jerry is one of Munster’s finest GAA servants and his Special Merit award will be welcomed warmly throughout the province.
