Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1107 from Millstreet.
Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this lovely Spring morning.
Our St Patrick’s weekend was one of the most successful and the most pleasant ever. The Pipe Band played the priest and alter servers into the church for 11.30am Mass, Canon FitzGerald blessed a bowl of Shamrock and distributed it among the band members. The choir sang their hymns as Gaeilge, and after Mass the pipe band gave a beautiful recital in the Chapel yard in warm sunshine.
The weather was everything that any one could wish for, and in spite of a weather forecast of hail rain and even thunder, the our patron Saint saved
us from it all .
Even at 5 in the evening when our parade started out from the DairyGold yard in Minor Row there was still brilliant sunshine. There was a wonderful turn out, with many floats and other exhibits coming from neighbouring towns to take part in ours.
The organising committee were delighted with the amount of sponsorship that they received as well as the great help that they on the ground. Once again the Ballinagree branch of Cope swept the board. Taking first prize in Macroom and repeating the process in Millstreet. Their entry was a replica of the Titanic. Its gigantic height reigned supreme over everything in the town. Further to that all the schools in the area took part which made a welcome change from other years. Many prizes were handed out for the various categories and the Cullen pipe band as well as our own put spring in every body’s step. It was all great fun and the pubs and food outlets did a roaring trade after it was all over.
The next day out in Carriginma their parade was a repeat success of the one they had last year. The little historic village pulsated to the sound of vintage tractors, floats, music by the Kelt and lots of novelties for the Children as well as many surprises for the ladies to celebrate Mothers Day. Well done all round. No doubt you will be seeing it all on LTV in the coming weeks.
Well done to our Herlihy’s Centra Store, West End who provided lovely teas and confectionery alfresco, after Mass on Sunday in honour of Mothers Day.
A very important meeting about the future of our ambulance service was held at the Wallis Arms Hotel on last Thursday evening. There was some confusion about the starting time which led to it being poorly attended. The speakers were Dr Cathal O Donnell, Nicky Gleeson and Robert Morton Directors of the Ambulance Service. Aine Collins TD and Councillor Noel Buckley also attended. I have to say that it was one of the most interesting and encouraging meeting that I have attended in recent times. All three speakers left no stone unturned to allay the fears of the people with regard to their future health care. In the coming months many changes will be made with the intention of making the best possible use of the resources that are now in place. Modern technology will be applied to cut down on waste of time and money. An air ambulance will become a reality as well as tracking service to house or mobile phones to enable help to get to where it is needed in the shortest possible time. And there I have to leave it.
