Tipperary traditional Irish music band, Truancy, headlined the Gig Rig at Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann 2012 after winning the finals of a national Battle of the Bands competition.
The popular Tipperary act was one of seven bands hoping to strike a chord with judges in Cavan this Friday, August 17, at the inaugural ‘Trad for Trocaire’ Battle of the Bands which they won.
The Battle of the Bands finalists competed for the chance to perform as the opening act for a major band during Temple Bar Trad Fest 2013 and three days recording time at Comhaltas’ Clasac Studios in Dublin which the group are very excited about.
The competition was run in the lead up to Trad for Trocaire, a national traditional music week run by Trocaire and Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, which will take place from 4th to 10th October 2012. The week celebrates Irish music, while raising funds to help poor people living in developing countries.
“The band is excited to have won the final and grateful that we were chosen to play,” said band member, Gavin Strappe. “We’re delighted to get the opportunity to showcase and promote our band at a great venue while also supporting and raising awareness for a great charity such as Trocaire. It’s great to be able to support a worthy charity such as Trocaire while doing something we love, playing music.”
Trocaire and Comhaltas are asking trad musicians and music fans of all ages to support their annual Trad for Trocaire week of goodwill and great music by holding a trad session or going to a local gig. To order a Trad for Trocaire fundraising pack with posters, flyers, wristbands, t-shirts, balloons and collection buckets or to find local gigs visit trocaire.org/trad or call Fiona Campbell in Trocaire on 01 5053213.
Tipperary & Cork Fleadh-goers supported Truancy at the ‘Trad for Trócaire’ Battle of the Bands competition between 5pm and 7pm on Friday 17th August on the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann Gig Rig in Cavan and they would like to thank everyone for their support.
Also a big congrats to Daniel O’Callaghan who plays with the “Crossfields Céilí Band” which won the U15 Céilí Band competition at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2012, which was held last weekend in Cavan.
