Thieves left empty-handed from a super-market in north Cork yesterday morning because the owner, on the advice of gardaí, had removed the cash the previous evening.

At 5.07am the gang used a stolen Mitsubishi 4×4 to smash through the front of O’Keeffe’s SuperValu in Millstreet.

While they caused a considerable amount of damage to the property they did not get any cash.

Inspector Declan O’Sullivan said that the local crime prevention officer had visited a number of premises in the region advising them to remove cash from ATMs when the stores closed to discourage ram-raiders.

He said the 4×4 was stolen about midnight in the village of Knocknagree, which is about 12km from Millstreet.

Inspector O’Sullivan said the raiders left the 4×4 at the scene and made their escape in another vehicle which they had brought with them.

“They did a substantial amount of damage to the shuttering and the front door of the supermarket,” Inspector O’Sullivan said.

Gardaí carried out a forensic examination of the 4×4 yesterday.

They were also studying CCTV footage and conducting house to house inquiries in the area.

Inspector O’Sullivan said gardaí were particularly anxious to hear from anybody who may have seen the 4×4 between the time it was stolen and the time it arrived in Millstreet.

The silver-grey 4×4 had the registration 91 C 14794.

“There were at least two and possibly three people involved. They had their heads covered and were wearing dark clothing,” Inspector O’Sullivan said.

Anybody with information about the raid is asked to contact Millstreet Garda Station at 029-70002 or Kanturk Garda Station at 029-20680.
