The following is the extended script of the c103 Regional Report broadcast this morning on Patricia Messenger’s “Cork Today” weekday local radio programme.
Good morning, Patricia and greetings, dear Listeners, from Millstreet, Co. Cork on this cold but bright Spring Tuesday morning. In this our 1,206th Regional Report we reflect on the value of our local website, number one is very popular in our local lotto and we report on the aftermath of the recent Storm Darwin ….. and there’s more – much more!
On this exact date, 18th February in 1911, the very first official airmail flight took place in India.
Cullen & District Special Needs Association’s Annual Sponsored Weight Loss Programme continues weekly on Monday nights where more and more pounds are being shed with many people focusing on daily exercises and the following of a sound, nourishing and sensible diet. Last night at Cullen Community Centre 35 people weighed in with a total loss of 47lbs on the night!
Meanwhile at Banteer’s “Glen Theatre” the “Voice of the Glen” is proving hugely popular with lots of wonderfully talented local singers participating.
Joseph Lawler reminds us that Millstreet Community Council meets this Tuesday night at 9.00 in the Wallis Arms Hotel where ideas are being explored and sought for this year’s annual St. Patrick’s Day events. In Carriganima this year’s Parade takes place on Sunday, 16th March at 3.00 p.m.. And in “The Pub” in Carriganima this Saturday night music is by “Back on Track”.
The Millstreet Town Lotto took place in the Malpaso Bar, Main Street on Sunday night where the Jackpot of €7,800.00 was not won. Number one proved amazingly popular as the numbers drawn were 1, 11, 21 and, yes, 31!
€100.00 went to Jerry Reardon with the ticket sold by “The Millwheel”. €50.00 went to Tommy Burke, Murphy’s Tce. While €20.00 each went to the following:
Gearóid Moynihan, Derrinagree; Grace, Andrea & Janette c/o Grace’s; Gerard Golden Kilmacrane; Pat Cremin c/o “The Millwheel”; Peggy Kelleher, Tullig; Nuala O’Connor, Cloghoula; Susan and Den c/o Corkery’s Bar and finally Eileen Kelleher of Dromsicane. Next week’s Jackpot will be a mighty €8,000.00 with the Draw to take place at McCarthy’s Bar in The Square, Millstreet.
This week’s LTV2 Programme No. 231 with lots of entertaining content is already available online…and speaking about the online concept…our local website www.millstreet.ie , with co-ordinators Hannelie O’Connor and Michael Cashman continues to attract ever increasing number of visitors. Recent updates include a feature we entitled our “Storm Tour of Millstreet” where we include almost fifty images of the effect of the recent Storm Darwin on our area especially in the felling of so many long established trees. This gallery of pictures received hundreds of hits. Minister for Research and Innovation, Seán Sherlock whom we just happened to meet in the town a few days ago, is also featured on our Millstreet website this week. And, of course, the extended version of our weekly c103 Regional Report is also uploaded on our Millstreet Website.
Con Kelleher, Cloghoulabeg, Millstreet recently presented an excellent programme of music at the monthly “Music Room” meeting in the Pearse Memorial Hall at Boherbue. And it is the same Con who will be the Guest Presenter at Millstreet Gramophone Circle this Friday night at 8.15 in the Canon O’Donovan Centre, Clara Road. Con indicates that both presentations will be quite different but we do hope that he will continue to precede each of his musical selections with his superbly delightful stories and splendidly researched information about each piece. Con is renowned for his marvelous wit and very impressive background knowledge.
A most successful annual Seniors Party took place in Dromtariffe Hall on Sunday, 16th February, beginning with the celebration of Mass by Fr. Liam Comer followed by a delicious hot meal for the large attendance. Pat Bucke provided magnificent music with many local singers adding superbly to the enjoyable event. An added dimension this year was the provision of a much appreciated service provided by dedicated Therapeutic Hand Care personnel. Coordinator, Margaret Crean indicates that a further training course in Therapeutic Hand Care organized by the Irish Red Cross will take place locally at a date yet to be announced.
Millstreet Hillwalking Festival 2014 takes place on the weekend of 12th/13th April with three walks on both days catering for all fitness levels.
Summer at Green Glens this year brings two highly prestigious international events. From 19th to 26th July we have the European Juggling Convention. This supremely colourful and exciting event was last held here in Millstreet in 2006 and we all have such great memories of that spectacular happening which was known as EJC2006. Following this Green Glens will host the European Pony Championship from 29th July until 3rd August 2014.
Millstreet G.A.A. presents “Who wants to be a thousandaire?” in Millstreet GAA Hall on Friday 21st March. Tickets available from committee members.
Finally, a thought on which to reflect: “On being asked to try out a new pen, it has been discovered that over 90% will write their own name!”
