There was an unbelievable finish to this round two Duhallow Junior A Hurling Championship game between Millstreet and Newmarket. Level going into the second half of extra time, Newmarket notched up three unanswered points. Despite much effort, all seemed lost for Millstreet until Mark Ellis goaled from a 21 yard free with a minute to go. He immediately returned the puck-out over the bar and it looked like Millstreet were set to win a game that had swung from side to side, but the next Newmarket puckout went long down the field and a shimozzle on the 21 saw the Newmarket forward break away with the ball and fire to the net. The match was over and Newmarket had won by two points.
The match had started even enough as the sides traded points. Newmarket looked to have more strength and running but had a lot of wides, while Millstreet were more efficient in their hurling, taking their chances when they presented themselves. but two goals late in the first half, and one for Millstreet by Tadgh Collins left the half time score at Newmarket 2-7 Millstreet 1-6.
Newmarket immediately scored two points at the start of the second half, Millstreet upped their game in the with some positional switches, and a noticeably less strength and speed in the Newmarket game making the difference, but it was Millstreet’s turn to miss the target time after time in the second half, but the points did come and Millstreet were gradually clawing their way back into the game, and for much of the second half there was never more than a goal in it, but still Millstreet just couldn’t get their noses in front, leveling a number of times before Newmarket would pop over another for the lead. In a frantic finish, Millstreet scored two points with a minute to go, before Newmarket went down to the other end and pointed a free, and Millstreet went back up the other end and levelled it at the end.
The sides traded points tit for tat in the first half of extra time, before the drama of the final few minutes unfolded.
Noone seemed to know that there was extra time, especially as it was getting very dark at the end of normal time. A draw would have been a fair result for both teams, but because Newmarket had already lost to Kilbrin in Round 1, both teams went into the draw where Newmarket have again been pitted against Kilbrin, and Millstreet play the winners of Banteer v Freemount
