Prepare to welcome the world to Millstreet! That’s the message from the Transition Year students at Millstreet Community School as they prepare to host the fourth annual World Wide Welcome multicultural event this Thursday, March 11 in the school library.
Starting at 7pm, the evening is a celebration of the diversity of cultures that now exist within the school and in the local community, and comprises song, dance, music and poetry, along with the chance to sample cuisine prepared by people from many of the 20 nationalities now present in the locality. Admission is free.
The students have been very busy preparing for the event, and three different groups have taken on the tasks of planning and preparation for the event.

Joining the celebrations will be Mr Wonder Mufunda who works for Trocaire in Zimbabwe. As programme manager for remergency appeals, Mr Mufunda is currently visiting schools around Ireland and was delighted to be invited to the World Wide Welcome.
” I can’t wait to get the chance to taste the food that people would be used to eating in their home country,” said Transition Year student Lisa O’Callaghan. I’m also looking to seeing the traditional clothes – they’re bound to be colourful.”
Lisa’s friend Muireann O’Keeffe added, ” It’ll be a bit of privilege to have all the people from different countries in our school because of an event we’ve organised. I can’t wait!”
This multicultural event is one of three significant events the Transition Years have taken part in since the beginning of March.
Already, they have held a ‘ sleep-out’ to raise awareness of Trocaire’s Lenten Campaign 2010 – Rural Poverty and Hunger, and they also all participated in the Trocaire 24 Hour Fast.
Education minister Batt O’Keeffe visited the sleep-out and both Michael Creed TD and Michael Moynihan TD have both indicated it is their intention to attend the World Wide Welcome evening.
