We said it would be a busy week but found that that was a bit of an understatement.
The passing of the legendery Rita Hickey came as a little surprise in mid week. Her passing brought people from many parts both at home and abroad to pay homage to their wonderful teacher. Ninety seven year old Rita came to Millstreet in 1942/3 from Tullow Co. Carlow to teach at our Presentation Convent School at secondary level. From where she progressed with her husband Garret along with Joe Garvey to start the first secondary school in Millstreet. It was a very new venture at the time, a ground-breaking project. From cautious beginnings it grew to be the most successful school in the south. Students came from miles away to attend,some cycling as much as ten miles to and from every day,while others took lodgings in the town. Such was the hunger that people had for Education at the time. So it was no surprise that Rita’s demise brought loving ,grateful past pupils from all quarters to pay their final homage to the great Lady who gave them the high quality of life that they are enjoying today.
Over the days of her funeral there was a wonderful gathering of people who seldom meet and stories of old were recalled and many questions asked & answered.
We want to convey our deepest sympathy to her wonderful family and may Rita’s lovely soul rest in Peace.
The Summer Horse Show opened on Tuesday amid the usual blaze of Horse wagons and horses and colour. For the rest of the week the Green Glens was a hive of activity. With judges and course builders coming from as far away as Melbourne. And many buyers from overseas paying big money for our horses in the sales ring.
The weather was great throughout and even for those who know or care nothing about horses,the Green Glens was the place to be.
Competitions went on from early every morning and indoors every night followed by our own local Tom & Connie of Celts fame and patrons danced until late. With the cusomery free admission all the way. On Sunday evening following the Grand Prix I met a very tired but very happy Noel C.
He hasn’t much time to rest as the mighty Millstreet/Drishane Castle International Horse trials (CCI& CIC classes )start on Thursday Aug 25th and will run until August 28. The plains of Drishane look amazing for this popular event.
Still with Drishane, A monster Intergeneralational Garden Fete will be held there on this Saturday August 20th from 2-6 pm. It’s an event with a difference, organised by the residents of Drishane to raise funds to cover the cost of their children’s books and other requirements for returning to school. There will be food and Crafts, Games, Music and Raffles and a lot more. They have painted a large mural on timber which will be on display. Please support them well.

Our Community Singers went to Freemount last week to record two programs with Jimmy Reidy. Special guests on the night were Tom Meaney and his lovely daughter Noreen. These programs will be broadcast on Monday Aug. 29and Sept 5th – in other words the last Monday of August and the first Monday on Sept.
Our Centra Store at the West End will host a 12 hr Spinathon this Friday in aid of Cancer Research, Details from the Shop.
A very pleasant event was held at the Kerryman’s Table on Sunday last at which a special Plaque was unveiled to the famous Riobard O’Sullivan , known as the Bard. Our Pipe Band was there as well as many relatives of the late great Moonlighter. A wonderful poem was recited by his 92yr old granddaughter who left her hospital bed to attend . She was lauded and applauded for her attendance. Well done to all those who helped with this important memorial.
Seán Radley wants to thank all those who helped his Voluntary Team with his recent Church Gate collection and all those who contributed. The collection raised €1,800 which will be needed to keep our Museum up and running for the year ahead. The Fund will also help to sustain the costs involved in the Millstreet Website.

Eucharistic Adoration in Millstreet Church every Tuesday & Wednesday starting at 10.30, and in Cullen Church on Thursdays from 10am to 7pm. You can drop in for a short visit or sign up to do an hour at a given time every week. Please give a little time to the Lord.

Our Holy Tubrid Well enjoys many visitors throughout the year and even at Show Time. A lad of 20 was found to have a rather worrying ailment last week and it was his own choice to visit our Holy Place every morning before starting his day.
We hope he gets a good result from his tests.
